A painting by artist John McNaughton caused quite of bit of controversy last week, and now he’s saying that sales of the much-talked-about work are through the roof.

You might have seen the painting, entitled “The Forgotten Man,” circulating around Facebook and other social networks. And the commentary provided was probably either laudatory or derisive, depending on the sharer’s political leanings.

The controversy, as you can see, arose from the imagery used in the forefront. It depicts President Obama trampling on the U.S. Constitution.

Apparently, all of the controversy has led to a boom in business. McNaughton tells CBS Las Vegas that he sold “in one day, what we would sell in three months.” After the painting went viral, he says that traffic to his site increased at such a pace that it crashed it. It took four attempts before the site was functioning again.

It’s probably not surprising that many people said that the painting was inherently racist. A group of former presidents (of course, all white) look on with amazement and derision as the first black president steps on the nation’s most important document.

McNaughton responds to this criticism by saying that “this is not a racial painting – it is about the vanishing of the American dream.”

The only exception to the disapproving faces is the handful of historical democrats – Clinton, F.D.R. – that seem to applaud the action. However, McNaughton also says that the painting isn’t partisan. “I take no favoritism of Republicans of Democrats. Both parties are guilty,” he says.

The painting itself is more than a year old, but it seems to have hit a resurgence after it appeared on the popular blog of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show.

Apparently, McNaughton isn’t planning on calling it quits on painting controversial political subjects. His next painting is called “One Nation, Under Socialism.”

Enough with the Cinnamon Challenge. I mean, it’s alright for getting girls to totally lose their composure at parties, but where’s the modern-day equivalent for men?

In days of yore, manhood was proven through feats of strength – carrying boulders, tearing phone books, tossing dwarves. Nowadays we’re left with amazing feats of stupidity performed before web cams.

But, if you’re gonna go the self-abuse through food route, don’t go with something sugar-and-spice. Be a man.

Now, why would a fool do something like this? The clue is in his sign-off at the end. Despite being in tremendous pain and discomfort, he still manages to stammer out his Twitter and YouTube handles, followed by the plea, “Subscribe to me, cuz I’m risking my life for laughs!”

Well, the concept went viral on a local level, anyway. What we have here is a city, Indianapolis, rooting for the brother of their team’s franchise quarterback, Peyton Manning. Peyton’s brother, Eli, is the starting quarterback for the New York Giants

When the Giants take the field on Sunday, it appears as if the city of Indianapolis, or at least pockets of it, will be rooting for Peyton’s brother. Part of the brief switch in allegiance (going from the Colts to Team Eli) has to do with the fact that Indianapolis Colts fans don’t like Tom Brady or the New England Patriots. The other reason has to do, no doubt, with the fact that Eli is Peyton’s brother.

Sporting a “Not in our town, Tom” graphic, the “Indy for Eli” site is clear where its owners will be rooting. The (brief) movement has seen a jump in its viral popularity, thanks to the local news outlets latching on to the movement, giving it a life of its own, at least on a local level:

The first image is a screenshot of Indianapolis local news station, WISHTV Channel 8 and the second is courtesy of a tweet from Jason Spells, a sportscaster for WRTV, also an Indianapolis affiliate.

There’s also a Facebook fan page for the “Indy for Eli” movement, and while it is pretty active, there aren’t many fans. Considering the Super Bowl is this Sunday, it’s doubtful the shift will be that dramatic, but then again, you never know. Perhaps some bored Colts fans get wind of the movement and decide to join in. With the amount of local exposure “Indy for Eli” is getting, this is entirely possible.

Not every successful viral venture has to be on a national scale. If a few thousand Colts fans join the movement, then the mission has to be considered successful.

Meet Teddy Bear. He’s a porcupine that’s destined for viral-stardom, especially if his Super Bowl winner pick turns out to be correct. Actually, Teddy was something of a hit before he got into the sports prognostication business, but thanks to his Super Bowl pick, Teddy is appearing on The Today Show and showing up in various blogs and web publications like ours.

Ah, the power of cute animals, corn on the cob and pairing these two with a popular sports event. It’s clearly undeniable. For those of you wondering which team Teddy picked, see for yourself:

Is it just me, or are the Giants the “sexy” pick for the Super Bowl? Maybe I’m just hearing things because according to ESPN’s SportsNation poll, America is split down the middle when it comes to picking, as you can clearly see:

I don’t recall seeing such a hotly contested subject being split down the middle like that, especially in relation to ESPN’s crowd. For my money, a sports discussion in just about any of ESPN’s comments sections is about as contentious as a meeting between SOPA supports and SOPA rejectors. Because of that, the 50/50 split is kind of weird.

As you can see from Teddy’s video, he has no such qualms about his pick. He slams the jar with the New England Patriots helmet to the side, in favor of the jar with the New York Giants helmet on it. From there, Teddy did what most animals are wont to do when presented with food — he devoured the corn — almost confirming his commitment to his Giants pick.

Teddy, as indicated, is already a viral hit. Thanks to his Super Bowl pick, Teddy no seems like he’s on cusp of Internet superstardom. His Twitter account is up to date with all of his appearances:

There’s nothing wrong with a little self-promotion, and with that in mind, we’ll help out Teddy’s viral cause by showing his appearance on NBC’s Today Show, courtesy of Hulu:

In true Hulu nature, there’s really no telling how long that video will be live, so get it while it’s hot. As for Teddy’s pick — the New York Giants — do you agree? Or are you a Patriots fan who’s been dying for a shot at revenge?

I wonder how much pain and embarrassment has been caused by the words “I bet you can’t do that?” I bet you can’t jump over that. I bet you can’t drink all that. I bet you can’t eat all of that.

People has been doing stupid things since long before the advent of the internet. But YouTube has added one new dimension to people doing stupid stuff – the viral dimension. Now, a video of one person attempting some ridiculous feat can catch on and become a trend. Thus is the case with the Cinnamon Challenge.

As you probably already know, the Cinnamon Challenge is simple in premise. The challenger must eat a tablespoon of ground cinnamon at one time, and get it all down. That means not vomiting or inhaling it. Oh, and you can’t wash it down with anything. According to Know Your Meme, it first hit the interwebs around 2001 but really got its start on YouTube in 2006.

But for anyone who has watched the videos, or dare I say, tried it themselves – you know that it’s anything but simple in practice. Side effects include uncontrolled coughing, burning, nausea, breathlessness, and an overwhelming feeling of failure. Very few people succeed. Exhibit A:

Now, the Cinnamon Challenge has led to a New Haven principal being put on leave, just because she reportedly turned a blind eye to the game being performed on school grounds.

According to the New Haven Register, Clinton Avenue School Principal Carmen Rodriguez saw either one student or a group of students attempting the Cinnamon Challenge during lunchtime and allegedly did nothing to stop it. A purported video of the incident was on YouTube, but has since been removed by the user.

Rodriguez has been placed on administrative leave and there is to be a full investigation into the incident.

The Register quotes a Yale researcher as saying ““I think there is a real hazard here. I think for the most part it will cause a lot of coughing and sputtering. Some will end up aspirating cinnamon and some could have acute respiratory distress.” He also said that the possibility of foreign materials in the lungs could be a real problem for kids with asthma.

Who am I to question that, but kids will be kids. And at least this viral trend is better than that god-awful planking crap. What do you think? Let us know in the comments. And before you do, check out some other Cinnamon Challenge videos from around the YouTubes:

A rare success story:

Recently, a story began circulating on Facebook about an incident on a Brazilian airline. The story, accompanied by a nondescript picture of an airline stewardess, soon went viral. Here is the text of the story:

This happened on TAM airlines.
A 50-something year old white woman arrived at her seat and saw that the passenger next to her was a black man.
Visibly furious, she called the air hostess.
“What’s the problem, ma?” the hostess asked her
“Can’t you see?” the lady said – “I was given a seat next to a black man. I can’t seat here next to him. You have to change my seat”
- “Please, calm down, ma” – said the hostess
“Unfortunately, all the seats are occupied, but I’m still going to check if we have any.”
The hostess left and returned some minutes later.
“Madam, as I told you, there isn’t any empty seat in this class- economy class.
But I spoke to the captain and he confirmed that there isn’t any empty seats in the economy class. We only have seats in the first class.”
And before the woman said anything, the hostess continued
“Look, it is unusual for our company to allow a passenger from the economy class change to the first class.
However, given the circumstances, the commandant thinks that it would be a scandal to make a passenger travel sat next to an unpleasant person.”
And turning to the black man, the hostess said:
“Which means, Sir, if you would be so nice to pack your handbag, we have reserved you a seat in the first class…”
And all the passengers nearby, who were shocked to see the scene started applauding, some standing on their feet.”
SHARE IF YOU ARE AGAINST RACISM!

These kinds of stories evoke a strong emotional reaction from many of us, and we want so badly to share them. But, is this story true?

A quick Snopes search reveals that this story has been around, in several different forms, since 1998.

From the Snopes entry:

“At different times the stories are circulated anew with their details altered. For instance, the story we recorded in 1998 about the racist woman on the British Airways flights out of Johannesburg came back for another round in 2004, that time purporting to be about a white woman on a flight between Saskatoon and Calgary. In 2005 it was told of a well-to-do woman seated next to a yarmulka-wearing Jew on a flight out of Atlanta. In January 2012 the story was spread via Facebook, that time about a “50-something year old white woman” traveling on TAM Airlines (a Brazilian air carrier).”

Winter is coming. Not only that, but so are quite a few nerdgasms as HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones is almost back for its second season.

HBO has just released the newest teaser trailer for the season, and it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that it looks awesome. All of your favorite characters like Tyrion Lannister & Daenerys Targaryen play a part in the trailer, as do some of the show’s most hated like the wretched Joffrey. Check it out below:

The season two premiere is set to take place on April 1st, unless it’s some sort of cruel April Fools Joke.

Twitter is buzzing about the little tease:

Last week, a ten second clip of Matthew Broderick recreating a scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off led to speculations that there could be a sequel in the works – a revelation that thrilled some fans of the old film and disappointed others.

It was soon revealed that the teaser clip didn’t actually have anything to do with a sequel, but was simply a teaser for a Super Bowl ad from Honda. We reported that the ad would indeed star Matthew Broderick and involved the recreation of at least a few scenes from the original film.

Well, now it’s here and available to watch in its entirety, via the Honda YouTube channel. Take a look at “Matthew’s Day Off,” which starts with Broderick calling in sick – to his agent.

To celebrate the launch of the all-new 2012 CR-V, Honda brought Ferris Bueller’s Day Off back in a big game commercial. We cast Matthew Broderick as himself, skipping out on a day of acting work and living it up in his all-new CR-V. Relive movie history with Honda’s fresh twist and wonderful homage to this ’80s classic.

Think you’re a true fan of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? We hid over two dozen references to the movie throughout the commercial. Some are obvious, some are VERY subtle. See how many you can find.

How many did you spot? The “life goes by fast” quote? The parade? The scummy valet and his car jump?

I think it’s a pretty good ad, sure to be one of the most-talked about on Super Bowl Sunday. However, there’s already some blowback coming from viewers of the ad. Here are the top-voted comments on Youtube:

Thanks for ruining my childhood dreams, with a crappy SUV.

Very glad I got to post the first comment…I can’t explain how disappointed I am. Don’t know if I’m just an idiot but for some reason I thought the 10 second teaser was a trailer for a Ferris Bueller 2, not a stupid Honda commercial. At this point I just can’t believe Matthew Broderick would allow anyone to use the priceless movie to advertise a car. Wow.

What do you think? Childhood-ruiner or good, nostalgic advert? Let us know in the comments.

And the results are spectacular. Provided you can shake your gaze from the awesome Portal 2 socks leading this article, the upcoming video will be a great addition to your weekend. It also serves as another reason to be against the SOPA/PIPA/ACTA trinity.

Perhaps I’m beating a dead horse, but the video I’m teasing is really great stuff, and it’s all from the mind of a creative YouTube user who goes by the name of Harry-UK. What Harry has done is mashed up the incredibly popular Portal 2 video game with the another fantastic piece of creativity, The Nightmare Before Christmas. The finished product — This Is Aperture — is the game’s would-be rendition of the song, This is Halloween, which appeared in the Tim Burton’s claymation movie. As indicated, the results are fantastic, and, judging by the amount of views the video has — over 200,000 since it was posted on January 27 — it’s been well-received (14,012 likes versus 124 dislikes).

Another example of what happens when you pair a creative end-user with the powerful tools technology and the Internet provide, but yet, in an effort to hold on to a shifting money stream, the entertainment industry, backed by some of the most powerful governments on earth, is trying to enact measures that would essentially kill this kind of creativity. Again, all it would take is someone from Disney or Valve to complain, and boom, Harry’s awesome creation is gone.

All in an effort to stamp out piracy.

Surely there are other ways to address this issue, although, according to this unfortunate report over at TorrentFreak, apparently not.

As for the video, Harry states he did all of the music and voices himself, which only enhances the final product, and again, judging by the amount of views This is Aperture the viral nature of the video is clear. It’s been seen on a number of popular video game blogs like G4TV and Joystiq.
