Foursquare has just released an update to their iOS app that lets users apply more filters to all of their searches.

“Looking for a cheap brunch spot that your friends go to, but you haven’t tried yet? With new filtering options in Explore, you can narrow down your search results to find exactly what you’re looking for. Tap the search bar at the top of the screen, then select different options like, ‘price,’ ‘haven’t been,’ ‘saved’ or ‘open now’ to find the perfect spot,” says Foursquare.

Before today’s update, Foursquare allowed users to narrow their searches in variety of ways – by category, trending places, recently opened locations, place they haven’t been before, places friends have been, and so on. With today’s update, Foursquare is letting users narrow their searches through multiple filters.

Here’s what the new filter screen looks like. It’s accesible via a “filter” button when open up the search box.

As you can see, users can now apply different filters at the same time, including price, previous check-ins, open now, and locations that are currently offering specials. You can sort your results by best match of by distance.

Minor update? Maybe. But it’s a useful one. And it also falls in line with Foursquare’s recent push to become a true player in the local search game.

You can grab the update today over at the App Store.

If you’re browsing Pinterest and you see a specific pin that you know your friend would like, you’ve always been able to send that pin to them. The process was annoying, however, and involved email.

Today, Pinterest alleviates this annoyance with the new send button. You can now send pins directly to your friends and family on both mobile and the web, as long as you both follow each other on the network.

“Just tap Send from either web or mobile to send a pin. You can send pins to fellow pinners (if you both follow each other), Facebook friends, or email contacts. We’ll show you the most recent people you’ve sent pins to for easy access,” says Pinterest. “You can even include a message to give it a more personal touch!”

When you send a pin to another user, they’ll be notified. If they make an action on that pin, including commenting, liking, or repinning, you’ll see that in your notifications as well. It’s a nice little fix to a previously irksome issue.

According to Pinterest, users should start to see the new send option rollout over the next few weeks.

Speaking of notifications, Pinterest finally added them to the mobile experience (both the iOS and Android apps). That update, which launched earlier this week, also brought mentions and improved search to both apps.

Instagram is borrowing another feature from Facebook today, as they are rolling out true people tagging for both iOS and Android. With the updated apps, you’ll be able to add people to photos for the first time. All you have …

Instagram is borrowing another feature from Facebook today, as they are rolling out true people tagging for both iOS and Android.

With the updated apps, you’ll be able to add people to photos for the first time. All you have to do is snap your picture, apply your favorite filter, and in the publishing phase of the process you’ll see a new “Add People” button. From there, you can tag friends, businesses, or anyone and anything with a username.

Of course, you’ve always been able to tag people on Instagram. But before, the tagging system worked a lot like Twitter – you could @ mention users but that’s about it. There was really no way of telling whether the photo’s @ mention was simply there to direct the user to it, or if it meant that user was actually in the photo.

“Photos are memories of the people, places and moments that mean the most to us. We have always sought to give you simple and expressive ways to bring the stories behind your photos to life. Your captions and hashtags capture the ‘what?’ and your Photo Map answers the ‘where?’ but until today we’ve never quite been able to answer the ‘who?’” says Instagram.

All of the photos you’re tagged in will now appear in a new profile section called “Photos of You.” The new feature will have all the same privacy settings of Facebook photos – mainly you’ll be able to control whether or not any tagged photo appears in your Photos of You section. You can adjust your settings to make sure you have to approve every tagged photo before it pops up for everyone to see.

Instagram is giving users until May 16th to familiarize themselves with the tagging feature before everyone’s Photos of You sections go public.

This new feature comes in version 3.5 on both iOS and Android. This update also adds a “report a problem” button to the app and also puts your privacy settings accesible on your profile screen.

Twitter has just released an update to both their iOS and Android apps that allow you to see Trends from all over the world as well as choose to see Trends specifically tailored to your interests and who you follow. The update also brings a few other good improvements like improved playback on Vine videos.

When accessing Trends on Twitter’s “discover” tab, you’ll now see the option to get “tailored trends” or also to change location. Here’s what Twitter will tell you when you attempt to change location:

“Tailored Trends are based on your location and who you follow which make them more relevant to your interests. If you change location, you’ll see Trends based around geography only.”

You can then pick from dozens of locations – mostly larger cities across the world. if you do so, your trends will simply be based on what’s popular around you – it’ll have nothing to do with who you follow.

Updates to iOS & Android apps: See Trends from all over the world or choose to have Trends tailored to your interests.

— Twitter (@twitter) May 1, 2013

With today’s update, replies to retweeted tweets now show both the author of the tweet and the user who retweeted it. Here’s the full list of updates to come along with version 5.6:

See what’s happening near you or around the world by viewing Trends in hundreds of locations.

Also:
•	Invite friends to join Twitter from within the app
•	Improved playback of Vine videos
•	Replies to retweeted Tweets now include both the author and person who retweeted the Tweet
•	Enjoy a smoother experience due to bug fixes and other improvements.

You can download the updates now in the App Store and on Google Play.

Let’s say you’re a photographer, and in your LinkedIn “experience” section you want to add some samples of your work – now you can do that. Let’s say you worked incredibly hard on a big presentation and wish to showcase that to everyone who views your profile – now you can do that.

“For the first time, you will now have the ability to showcase your unique professional story using rich, visual content on your LinkedIn profile. This means you can illustrate your greatest achievements in the form of stunning images, compelling videos, innovative presentations and more. From the analyst who makes annual predictions on tech trends to the 3D animator who is looking to fund a new short film, the opportunities are limitless for how professionals can now use the LinkedIn profile to help showcase these unique stories in a visual way,” says LinkedIn’s Udi Milo.

In short, LinkedIn is letting users create a more visual resume.

To get started, just edit your profile and look for areas to add visual content in your “summary,” “experience,” and “education” sections. LinkedIn says that they rollout of this new feature begins today with English-speaking users.

Twitter’s 6-second video app Vine has just received an update. Version 1.1 add front-facing camera support, mentions, and improved people search.

When shooting your Vine, all you have to do is tap a new button on the bottom-left=hand corner to toggle between using the front-facing and regular camera on your device. Naturally, this will help Vine auteurs who fancy including selfies in their videos.

Vine finally supports @mentions as well.

“Vine now supports mentions, so you can tag people in your post. Users who are mentioned will receive a notification in Activity. To mention a user, type @username and select the name among the suggestions you’ll see. See the screenshot below for an example — when I type @chris, I see suggestions for Chris Fry, Chris Hardwick and Christofer Drew. When I select Chris Hardwick, his Vine profile will automatically link in my post’s caption,” says Vine engineer Kristian Bauer.

Vine’s last iOS app update added trending hashtags to help users surface more content. Vine also recently made videos embeddable via both the web and on mobile.

Last week, Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann confirmed that Vine is coming to Android soon.

You can grab the update for Vine for iOS over at the App Store.

If you thought Twitter had forgotten about the ol’ Twitter for Mac app, think again! Sure, it hadn’t had an update for over a year – but that’s all in the past. Today, Twitter launches a significant update to the app and it’s likely just the beginning.

First off, Twitter for Mac now has Retina display support.

“Now Twitter is even more vibrant and detailed on the highest resolution Mac notebooks. With this update, Tweets will be clearer and sharper, creating a more vivid experience,” says Twitter.

There’s also a new share photo button in the compose box of tweets. Plus, Twitter for Mac is now available in 14 new languages: Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Turkish.

Twitter for Mac Tech Lead Ben Sandofsky wrote today’s Twitter blog post on the update, and in it he says that we should “keep an eye out for more improvements to come.” Apparently, he’s serious about devoting more time to Twitter for Mac:

P.S. I’m taking a break from iOS to work on Twitter for Mac full time.

— Ben Sandofsky (@sandofsky) April 25, 2013

You can grab the update in the Mac App Store today.

Tumblr has just updated their iOS app to make it easier for users to share across networks, as well as also bringing a new email template and other improvements to the party.

Tumblr has finally given iOS users the ability to share posts via Facebook and Twitter – something that other Tumblr users have been able to do for a while now.

For those who wish to browse Tumblr outside the official app, they’ve also added Pocket and Instapaper support to the iOS app. The new app also features a new email template which lets users easily view messages in either the Tumblr app or their mail client.

Smaller updates include scrolling animated GIFs and a new photo-disposal gesture. Here’s te full list of updates:

Share posts via Twitter, Facebook, and more

Save stuff for later using Instapaper and Pocket

Email an entire post with our beautiful new template

Fling a photo up or down to close it!

GIFs animate while you scroll*

Following list is now alphabetized and searchable

This update comes just a couple of days after Tumblr launched their first-ever in-feed mobile ads for both iOS and Android. Users will now see as many as four ads a day from the likes of Pepsi, GE, and Warner Bros.

And they also just launched their first-ever Window Phone app.

You can grab the updated app from the App Store today..

Facebook has just released a significant redesign for pages on mobile, one that they say is better suited for how people actually look for info on mobile devices.

“Each day, millions of people visit Facebook Pages – with almost half accessing them from their mobile phones. Today, we’ve developed a new mobile Pages layout tailored to the way people look for information on their mobile devices. It’s now easier for your customers to interact with your Page in a way that’s both efficient and useful,” says Facebook.

Here’s what the new pages design looks like on iOS:

You’ll immediately notice that Facebook has moved many of the action buttons to a single row on the top. This includes “like,” “check-in,” “call,” and “more.” Right below that, you’ll see a map view. That’s followed by directions, hours, and prices (if applicable).

Below that, you’ll see more real estate given to star ratings and user reviews. The “write post” button has been removed from view – and been replaced by a big “write recommendation” button. It’s clear that Facebook wants you to bulk up places’ ratings and reviews, instead of simply writing something like “hey, love the place” on its Timeline.

Below that, you’ll see photos from the page, scrollable from side-to-side. In all, Facebook has not only made mobile pages better looking (a generally improved aesthetic), but they’ve taken all the important information and put it front and center on the page.

For page owners, there are a couple of other benefits from the redesign:

Higher-appearing pinned posts: You can pin important posts (including Facebook Offers or videos) from your desktops. These posts are now front and center when Pages are accessed on mobile devices.

Easier mobile management: You now have the ability to easily switch between public and admin views directly from your mobile Pages/devices.

The mobile pages redesign is visible today on iOS and Facebook on the web. They say that it will be coming to Android devices soon.

YouTube, who has turned its attention to content creators and channels over the past year, is looking to reward them by giving them more real estate on users’ homepages.

Starting next week, logged-in users will see a new look to the homepage. It’ll put more videos from individual channel above the fold, replacing the one-video-per-line current format with one that puts multiple videos on each line.

Currently, here’s what the YouTube homepage looks like for logged-in users. The channels they subscribe to get one video per line in the recent activity stream:

And next week, users will see more videos, side-by-side, on each row on the homepage:

YouTube has also changed how updates from channels are displayed on the homepage. If a user has been watching a bunch of videos from a series, they may see an update telling them to watch the next episode in the series.

Also:

Also, to help someone find the next best thing to watch, we’re looking for patterns in how viewers use YouTube. We know that a lot of fans come back to watch every single video from their favorite channels, regardless of whether those videos were uploaded yesterday or last year. For those most loyal fans, we want to make sure that their favorite channels are always up top so they never miss a beat. And for those fans that watch mainly from their subscriptions, we’ll move their other recommendations further down so they can always see their favorite channels first.

These improvements will rollout next week, and YouTube says that there are more coming “to make the homepage smarter.”
