According to a report from the East Anglian Daily Times, Bury St Edmunds Mayor Terry Buckle drove his car through the front of a Tesco Express on Tuesday. The 73-year-old Buckle had only been mayor of the town for five days when the incident occurred. Bury St Edmunds is a small town located in Suffolk, England.

Buckle reportedly drove the care from a parking spot into the front door of a Tesco Express shop. Buckle was uninjured, but was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution, and had X-rays taken of his neck. Though sore from the accident, he was then taken home to rest. No other serious injuries were reported.

Despite the nature of the accident, the damage caused was reportedly minimal. The side mirrors on Buckle’s car were damaged, and the doors and security equipment near the entrance to the Tesco were also damaged.

It appears that Facebook’s paid messaging test has crossed the pond, as users in the U.K. are reporting that they are being given the opportunity to pay upwards of £10 to send messages to some users’ inboxes.

“The system of paying to message non-friends in their inbox is designed to prevent spam while acknowledging that sometimes you might want to hear from people outside your immediate social circle,” said Facebook in a statement.

This is an expansion on a months-old test that first originated in the U.S. back in December of 2012. Facebook began to test the “paid messages,” which allow users to pay a small fee to ensure that the messages they send reach the intended recipient’s inbox.

Note it’s their inbox that we’re shooting for – not the “other” folder. That’s Facebook’s version of a spam folder, and it houses messages deemed spammy or unimportant, based on a sorting algorithm.

The Telegraph reports that U.K. users are seeing a sliding pay scale for celebrities that quotes a message price based on their number of followers and message competition.

“We are testing a number of price points in the UK and other countries to establish the optimal fee that signals importance. Part of that test involves charging higher amounts for public figures, based on the number of followers they have. This is still a test and these prices are not set in stone,” said Facebook.

It’s likely that any message a random Facebook user sends to a celebrity with millions of followers or even someone that they simply don’t know and is way outside their network will be relegated to the “other” messages folder. With this test, Facebook is giving users a way to make sure that these messages reach the main inbox.

Although it could be seen as Facebook giving people a way to pay to spam you, Facebook has always said that it’s about reducing spam.

“Several commentators and researchers have noted that imposing a financial cost on the sender may be the most effective way to discourage unwanted messages and facilitate delivery of messages that are relevant and useful,” said Facebook when they first launched the test.

As Kate Middleton’s baby bump grows larger, speculation about the Duchess of Cambridge’s due date has reached a fever pitch. In January it was officially announced that the Duchess’ due date is sometime in July.

This week, the scope of the due date has been narrowed even further.

According to an E! News report, Middleton spoke with the press in Glasgow, telling them that “mid-July” is when the baby is expected. “It’s around mid-July, but apparently babies have their own agenda,” the Duchess is quoted as saying.

The Duke and Duchess were in Glasgow this week as part of a two-day tour of Scotland. The couple met with Prince Charles today at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, where they were scheduled to participate in the opening of a new Outdoor Center.

In 2011 two men were arrested in England for plotting to rob and murder pop star Joss Stone.

According to a report in The Telegraph, the men, Junior Bradshaw and Kevin Liverpool, have been convicted on conspiracy to to cause grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to rob. Liverpool has been sentenced to life in prison, and will serve a minimum of 10 years and eight months. Bradshaw’s sentencing was postponed.

According to the Telegraph report, the pair were found near the singer’s home with a “samurai sword” and knives. At one point the criminals asked a mailman for directions to Stone’s house. The amateur criminals were reported to have had notes outlining a plot to behead Stone and dump her body in a river.

The motive for the men’s plot isn’t entirely clear, though notes written by the men contained references to the British Royal family. The writings referred to the fact that Stone had been invited to the Prince William’s wedding in 2011. The men also mentioned Eminem, Beyonce, R. Kelly and Chris Brown.

Stone’s mother addressed the media after the convictions, thanking supporters on her daughter’s behalf and expressing relief that the men are behind bars.

A woman in the U.K. has reportedly given birth to a humongous baby more than twice the size of a normal infant.

According to a BBC News report, Jade King of Bristol gave birth last month to a baby George. The newborn was reported to have weighed 15 pounds, 7 ounces at the time of his birth.

As you might imagine, a baby that large caused some complications during childbirth. George’s shoulders became stuck during birth, and the baby reportedly went five minutes without oxygen. Doctors told the couple that George had only a 10% chance of survival as they transferred him to St. Michael’s Hospital in Bristol. Luckily, doctors were able to help the baby and George was allowed to go home for the first time only four-and-a-half weeks after his troubled birth.

George is getting regular check-ups and Jade stated that an MRI did not reveal any major brain damage to the child. She did relate, though, that none of the clothes they had bought before his birth were able to fit him.

Spotify is removing one of the barriers for users in the U.K. who choose to use the streaming service’s free option.

Starting today, users in the U.K. are no longer limited to 5 plays – the cap has been removed. Until now, Spotify Free users in the U.K. could only stream a specific track 5 times before it was removed from their available options – forever. This 5-play cap kicked in 6 months after users signed up for the free service.

Spotify first installed the 5-play cap back in 2011, when they also cut the total listening time (after 6 months) in half, from 20 hours per month to 10 hours per month.

Here’s what Spotify had to say:

We’ve got some mighty fine news for all Spotify Free users. From today, there’s no more 5 play-per-song limit. You can listen to your favourite songs as many times as you like.

That’s right, no more greyed-out songs. The tracks that you couldn’t listen to before will once again be available for your listening pleasure.

Give it a try.

This move means that free users in the U.K. can now experience Spotify in a way similar to most everyone else in the world – unlimited track streaming with a monthly total hours cap that is supported by ads. U.S. users have never had to deal with a specific track cap.

France is currently the only country that still has the 5-play-per-track cap.

Earlier this month, Spotify expanded its web player beta in the U.K., giving users another way to use the service. Spotify’s web player, first announced last year, is set to hit the U.S. later this year.

[Spotify UK via TechCrunch]

U.K. Electronics retailer HMV is set to close 37 more stores and lay off 464 more employees. This is in addition to the 66 store closures and 930 employee lay offs that were announced earlier this month.

No date has been set for the store closures, but individual stores will be closing in the next four to six weeks. Adding in the other closures, HMV will be left with just over 100 stores in the U.K. The individual stores to be closed have been announced:

Ashford, Basildon, Bolton, Cheltenham, East Kilbride, Enfield, Folkestone, Glasgow Argyle, Gloucester, Grimsby, Hatfield Galleria, Heathrow T5 Departure Level, Heathrow Terminal 1, Heathrow Terminal 3, Heathrow Terminal 4, Hemel Hempstead, High Wycombe, Isle of Wight, Lancaster, Leadenhall, Mansfield, Middlesbrough, Newbury, Newcastle Silverlink, Newport, Nuneaton, Redditch, Salisbury, Scarborough, Southport, Stafford, Staines, Stockport, Swindon, Taunton, Torquay, Woking.

Word of the extra closures comes via Deloitte, which was chosen to administrate HMV in Jaunary after the company failed to come to terms with its creditors. Administrators appointed by Deloitte are currently restructuring the retailer for a possible sale.

“As part of our ongoing review of HMV’s financial position, we have undertaken a further review of the store portfolio and have identified an additional 37 stores for closure,” said Nick Edwards, joint administrator of HMV. “This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of the restructured business continuing as a going concern. Together with the previously identified 66 closures, this restructuring will result in a residual portfolio of some 116 stores.

“We are extremely grateful to the staff for their continued strong support and commitment during an understandably difficult period. All other key stakeholders including suppliers and landlords remain supportive and we appreciate their ongoing assistance.”

The DNA testing, so far, covers 2,501 samples. Of these, 29 of the samples were found to be positive for presence of horse DNA at or above the level of 1%.

“Since this incident began on 16 January, businesses have been carrying out a large number of tests,” said Catherine Brown, FSA Chief Executive. “We said that industry should share those results with us, and the public, and we asked for the first results to be with us today. The results so far date from when businesses began their testing four weeks ago. They include results which were received by companies up to around 10am this morning.”

Companies were asked to test composite beef products, such as burgers. The FSA report shows that horse meat was found in beef burgers, beef lasagne, and spaghetti bolognese.

Though those 29 positive samples make up less than 2% of all the samples tested, that’s still too much for the FSA.

“We’ve asked industry to test for horse DNA down to a level of 1%,” said Brown. “There are two reasons for this. First, that’s a pragmatic level above which we think any contamination would be due to either gross incompetence or deliberate fraud; it’s not going to be accidental. Second, some laboratories can only test accurately down to a level of 1%.

“But that does not mean that we’re not concerned with, or that we accept, levels below 1%. In terms of faith groups, there remains a significant issue about trace levels of other species below 1%. So we have a separate programme of work under way with Defra to look at the issues around that, too.”

The horse meat scandal in the U.K. began in January, when horse meat was found in beef products sold in Ireland.

Though the cases were not explicitly linked to the horse meat scandal, police this week have arrested several individuals from the Peter Boddy Slaughterhouse in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. Police have also conducted related raids in Hull and Tottenham, where they collected “computers and documentary evidence”, as well as “meat samples.”

The U.K.‘s Health Protection Agency (HPA) this week confirmed that a patient receiving intensive care treatment at a Manchester hospital has been diagnosed with a new type of coronavirus.

The patient, who had recently travelled to the Middle East and Pakistan, is the second confirmed U.K. resident to be diagnosed with the virus. Worldwide, 10 confirmed cases of the virus have been diagnosed. The new virus has been found in patients with acute respiratory illnesses who had coughing, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, and a fever.

“The HPA is providing advice to healthcare workers to ensure the patient under investigation is being treated appropriately and that healthcare staff who are looking after the patient are protected,” said John Watson, head of the respiratory diseases department at the HPS. “Contacts of the case are also being followed up to check on their health.”

Coronaviruses generally infect the upper respiratory system and gastrointestinal tract. Though they have been linked to the common cold, they are also cause of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

The first case of the new coronavirus was diagnosed in the U.K. in September 2012. That patient died from a severe respiratory infection.

Since that time, the HPA has been working with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease prevention and Control (ECDC) to watch for illnesses caused by the new virus. Doctors in the U.K. have also been provided with updated guidance on the investigation and management of possible cases of the new coronavirus.

“Our assessment is that the risk associated with novel coronavirus to the general UK population remains extremely low and the risk to travelers to the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding countries remains very low,” said Watson. “No travel restrictions are in place but people who develop severe respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath, within ten days of returning from these countries should seek medical advice and mention which countries they have visited.”

Today, Deloitte, the firm hired to oversee HMV’s administration, announced that 66 HMV stores will be closing throughout the U.K. These stores collectively have 930 employees, and no plans to relocate them were revealed. HMV currently has 220 stores in the U.K.

All other key stakeholders remain very supportive and I continue to be hopeful of securing a future for the restructured business.”

No date has been set for the closure of the stores, but they are expected to shut down sometime in the next two months. Below is the list of stores that will be closing. Consumers near these stores would be well-served to keep an eye on them to watch for closeout sales.
