Twitterers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands will be happy to know that TwellowHood, the Twellow feature that allows Twitterers to connect with people in their own area, is now available in these areas. Until now, it has only been available in the US, Canada, and Australia.

If you are unfamiliar with Twellow, think about it as a yellow-pages service for finding people on Twitter. You can search for things or browse the directory to find people who tweet about the topics you are interested in. TwellowHood lets you browse your local area to find poeple on Twitter to connect with. Twellow and TwellowHood are WebProNews services.

"Our team is really pleased to bring Britain and Ireland online with Twellowhood," says Twellow’s lead developer Matthew Daines. "The UK is one of our larger sources of traffic, and this will help our UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands users get better usage out of Twellow. London happens to be my wife’s hometown, so there is some personal satisfaction in it for me. A big thanks also to Chad Sweely of our support staff for helping us round up the data for the region."

The region is divided into the following areas:

- England
- Scotland
- Wales
- Northern Ireland
- Ireland
- Isle of Man
- Channel Islands

Don’t think that TwellowHood will stop with the countries it already supports. "We are looking forward also to expanding into more European countries, as well as looking into some of the larger Asian countries," says Daines.

TwellowHood is an incredibly useful tool for Twitter users, because it brings Twitter closer to home. It makes it easier to find people you know or local businesses/organizations you wish to follow.

Back in the summer, Twitter announced that it was working on an API to give developers the ability to geotag tweets. The company has now made that available.

There is no geotagging on Twitter.com yet, but Twitter apps will now be able to support it. So potentially, you will be able to geotag tweets and show the location from where you tweeted.

"The added information provides valuable context when reading your friends tweets and allows you to better focus in on local conversations," Twitter says in the announcement. "Now you can find out what live music is playing right now in your neighborhood or what people visiting Checkpoint Charlie are saying today about the anniversary of the Berlin Wall. These are only the beginning and we are really looking forward to seeing the creative uses emerge from the developer community."

If you’re concerned about privacy, you should note that geotagging is disabled by default for all users. You have to opt-in to use it. You can do so by going to the settings page and clicking "enable geotagging."

In addition to that, Twitter has updated its privacy policy to include geotagging, as well as to "describe the public nature" of most of what people post to Twitter. "We’ve tried to keep it short and sweet with lots of real life examples so it’s simple to read through," the company says.

The location element can make Twitter more useful in some cases. This doesn’t only apply to where a Twitterer happens to be at any given time, however. It is also helpful to know where they are from or where they reside, in some cases. This means you can find Twitterers of interest in your own town, for example. Our own Twellowhood tool (part of our Twellow service) is a great way to do this.

"Being able to offer Australia is a great addition to Twellowhood, and we’re pleased to be able to bring this functionality to our Australian users," says Matthew Daines, Twellow’s lead developer.

Australian states and territories included in the service are:

- New South Wales
- Northern Territory
- Queensland
- South Australia
- Tasmania
- Victoria
- Western Australia

"We hope to be bringing other countries online soon as well," says Daines. "Twitter is a phenomenon without borders, so we want to cater to those around the world that make it a great place to find people."

TwellowHood is an incredibly useful tool for Twitter users, because it brings Twitter closer to home. It makes it easier to find people you know or local businesses/organizations you wish to stay updated on.

Twitter just announced that it has plans to launch a feature that makes the service location-aware. They’re rolling out a new API that will allow developers to add latitude and longitude to any specific tweet.

"Folks will need to activate this new feature by choice because it will be off by default and the exact location data won’t be stored for an extended period of time," says Co-founder Biz Stone. "However, if people do opt-in to sharing location on a tweet-by-tweet basis, compelling context will be added to each burst of information."

"For example, with accurate, tweet-level location data you could switch from reading the tweets of accounts you follow to reading tweets from anyone in your neighborhood or city—whether you follow them or not," he explains. "It’s easy to imagine how this might be interesting at an event like a concert or even something more dramatic like an earthquake. There will likely be many use cases we haven’t even thought of yet which is part of what makes this so exciting."

It is worth noting that our own Twellow already has a feature called TwellowHood, that lets you find local Twitterers based on their city of residence. This can be a useful tool for connecting with people in your area, or from areas from which you are familiar.

Twitter will be adding the feature to Twitter.com as well, but will release geolocation to developers first. So look for this functionality on various Twitter-apps before finding it on the site.

Twitter seems to be stepping it up in the way of usability. They also recently announced plans for retweet capabilities (see why that’s good for businesses here).

Twellow, our tool that has made finding fellow Twitterers with common interests easier for a number of users has just made searching for these people even more convenient. You can add special characters to your queries to enhance your search.

If you are unfamiliar with Twellow, think about it as a yellow-pages service for finding people on Twitter. You can search for things or browse the directory to find people who tweet about the topics you are interested in.

These functions were poitned out by Greg Lambert at 3 Geeks and a Law Blog, and we decided to make them public knowledge. Lead Twellow Developer Matthew Daines says:

By using these characters in your search you can narrow your search down or broaden it to include people you might not otherwise find in a simple search. For example, if you want to find all people on Twellow that identify themselves as having something to do with dogs OR cats in New York, try this:

(dog | cat) (”new york” | nyc)

Here’s what you can do:

Operator

Example

&

Search for people matching ALL terms, e.g. CEO & Kentucky will match anyone that has CEO AND Kentucky in their profile. This is the default behavior, so CEO Kentucky is the same as CEO & Kentucky.

|

Search for people matching ANY terms, e.g. Kentucky | KY will match anyone that has Kentucky OR KY in their profile.

" "

Search for people matching AN EXACT PHRASE by enclosing the phrase in QUOTES, e.g. "Lexington Kentucky" will match anyone that has Lexington Kentucky in their profile, but NOT those that have Lexington, central Kentucky.

-

Search for people with a PHRASE EXCLUDED, e.g. Lexington -MA will match anyone that has Lexington KY OR Lexington NC, etc. in their profile, but NOT those that have Lexington MA.

( )

Search for people matching GROUPS OF PHRASES, e.g. (NC | KY) Lexington will match ONLY those that have Lexington KY OR Lexington NC, etc. in their profile, but NOT those that have Lexington Kentucky OR Lexington MA, etc..

Combined

Search operators can be COMBINED to produce more complex matching, e.g. ("New York City" | NYC) | ("united kingdom" | UK) "web developer" | "web designer" will match web developers or web designers in either New York City OR the United Kingdom.

If you wish to keep this table for reference, you can simply bookmark our Twellow Search Tips page, which may grow over time.

Don’t forget that you can also use Twellow to find Twitterers in your own city by using the TwellowHood feature, which is so far available in the U.S. and Canada (with more countries to come).

Last week we launched TwellowHood, part of our popular Twellow service, and a way to find people who are on Twitter by the cities they live in. This lets you find out who close to you is using Twitter, and can lead to you making some connections with locals that you may not have otherwise.

If you are unfamiliar with Twellow, think about it as a yellow-pages service for finding people on Twitter. You can search for things or browse the directory to find people who tweet about the topics you are interested in.

TwellowHood was before only available for Twitterers in the U.S. While Matthew Daines, Twellow’s lead developer promised it would be coming to other countries, there were quite a few people clearly anticipating such a move. Well, going one country at a time, Canada is now available through TwellowHood as well.

"Canada has added greatly to the Twitter and Twellow communities, and we’re excited to be able to bring TwellowHood to our Canadian friends," says Daines. The addition of Canada brings over 11,000 new people to TwellowHood.

TwellowHood as been received quite well by Twitterers, and will no doubt continue to be by others as it grows on a more international level. Be on the lookout for more countries to become available, as well as other features to be added to Twellow in the future.
