Arias was found guilty last week for the brutal murder of her former boyfriend, Travis Alexander. Alexander’s body was found in a shower at his home with a slit throat, nearly 30 stab wounds, and a bullet wound to the head. Now, the jury in Arias’ trial will decide whether she will receive the death penalty for her crime.

According to an Associated Press report, the testimony at today’s hearing has been very emotional. Alexander’s family members told jurors the various ways in which the murder affected their lives, including health problems and nightmares. Some members of the jury were reportedly brought to tears by the family’s testimony.

The sentencing will continue on Monday, with witnesses formerly close to Arias expected to provide testimony. The jury will decide, based on Arias’ crime, her past, and their own feelings about the case, whether Arias is to die or spend the rest of her life in prison. The prosecution is reportedly arguing that the nature of her crime makes the death penalty the appropriate sentence, while Arias’ defense is arguing that she does not deserve to die. Arias stated in an interview shortly after her guilty verdict that she would rather die than serve a life sentence.

This week, a pre-trial hearing for Zimmerman’s trial turned to the topic of the shouts heard on a 911 call recorded at the time of the incident. Zimmerman had called a non-emergency police number at the time of the incident. Martin was also on the phone, with a female friend who has stated she heard Martin say, “Why are you following me?” shortly before his death.

According to an Associated Press report on the trial, the prosecution has hired audio experts to determine whether the shouts heard on the call recording were those of Zimmerman or Martin. Of the two experts cited in the story, one found that the shouts were Martins and the other found they were a mix of both Zimmerman and Martin. In a court filing, Zimmerman’s lawyer has stated that he believes the audio analysis could prejudice jurors, and should not be allowed at the trial.

Since he was charged with Martin’s murder, Zimmerman has been in hiding and using various schemes to pay for his legal representation.

According to an Associated Press report on today’s hearing, Simpson was allowed to have his right hand free during the hearing, to take notes and drink water.

Witnesses were called to testify about the legal advice given by Simpson’s former trial lawyer, Yale Galanter. Simpson’s co-counsel during the trial, Gabriel Grasso, today testified against Galanter’s trial strategy of focusing on Simpson’s claimed ignorance of the guns that were used in the robbery. Galanter is expected to testify on Friday.

Simpson was convicted in 2008 for leading a 2007 armed robbery at the Palace Station hotel and casino in Las Vegas. Simpson and his associates stole memorabilia at gunpoint from a sports memorabilia dealer, claiming that the items had been previously stolen from him. Following the conviction, Simpson appealed, but the conviction was upheld by the Nevada Supreme Court in 2010. Without a new trial, Simpson may only have to serve nine years of his sentence, as he is up for parole in 2017.

The case involves Chicago-based Timelines.com, a site that allows users to create interactive “timelines” based on historical events. Back in October of 2011, they sued Facebook for trademark infringement just weeks after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the new Timeline profile page at the company’s f8 conference.

That trial was supposed to have begun this morning, but Bloomberg is reporting that it has been delayed without further explanation.

According to the report, U.S. District Judge John W. Darrah conferred with lawyers for approximately 90 minutes before declaring a recess, after which he said that the tril would be postponed until either tomorrow afternoon, or if need be, May 7th.

After Timelines.com sued Facebook for the supposed trademark infringement, Facebook countersued, claiming that the word “timeline” was too generic for federal trademark protections. They argue that Timelines.com has no legal rights to them, and that they should be canceled.

Facebook moved for dismissal, but Judge Darrah rejected that motion earlier this month. He said that Facebook “failed to demonstrate, as a matter of law, that the marks are generic.” He noted that the word “timeline” may very well have specific meaning to Timelines.com users, and therefore the case should see a trial.

As of now, that trial will have to wait.

The website, Timelines.com, lets users create and edit “timelines” of historical events. They sued Facebook back in October of 2011, just weeks after Facebook announced their new Timeline product at the company’s f8 conference. As of now, all Facebook users have the new Timeline, which is an update of the traditional Facebook profile page.

Timelines.com claimed that Facebook was infringing upon their trademarks by operating the new profile under the name “Timeline.” Facebook quickly countersued, claiming that the term “timeline” is generic – too generic in fact to deserve any sort of federal trademark protections. They have argued that the trademarks should be canceled.

“Given the generic or at least merely descriptive nature of the term ‘timeline’ when used to identify chronologies of events and related information (or tools for their creation), as well as the prior and widespread use of the term by third parties, Counterdefendant does not own exclusive rights in the term ‘timelines’ as used in connection with timeline creation and collection services,” says Facebook.

Earlier this year, Facebook asked U.S. District Judge John W. Darrah to dismiss the original suit. And a few weeks ago, Darrah ruled that the claim must go to trial. He said that Facebook had ““failed to demonstrate, as a matter of law, that the marks are generic.”

He also concluded that with “millions of dollars invested in its business and more than a thousand active users,” it’s reasonable to believe that the word “timeline” has its own specific meaning to Timelines.com users.

Timelines.com has just shy of 100,000 visitors a month, while Facebook boats over 1 billion monthly active users. The trial began this morning in the Northern District Court of Illinois.

According to a report in the tabloid The Sun, Pistorius spent a night out with friends drinking this weekend. The sighting is supposedly Pistorius’ first night out since being charged. According to the report, Pistorius was seen at a Johannesburg bar drinking with friends and flirting with women.

Pistorius is currently out on bail while awaiting trial for the Valentine’s Day murder of Steenkamp, who was a model. He was charged with premeditated murder on February 15, and is reported to have cried as the charges were read. Pistorius claims that he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder, and shot her through the door of the his bathroom.

Pistorius is a double amputee who uses prosthetics to compete in sprinting. In 2012 he became the first double leg amputee to compete in the Olympics, where he competed in the 400 meter and 4 x 400 meter relay competitions.

The title was developed by Ubisoft Shanghai, with the game’s original developer, RedLynx, supervising the port. The game will feature all of the content found in the record-breaking Trials Evolution for the Xbox LIVE Arcade, including four-player multiplayer (local and online), global leaderboards, rider customizations, and the track editor. It does not appear, however, to include the recently released “Riders of Doom” DLC add-on.

In addition, all of the tracks and skill games from Trials HD have been included. The tracks were recreated using the graphics and physics engines for Trials Evolution. RedLynx also assured gamers that Gold Edition has been “optimized and enhanced” for PC, and that some features in the game, such as the leaderboards and track sharing, have been re-designed slightly to fit the platform.

The dedicated Trials fan base is getting a present this holiday season in the form of new DLC for Trials Evolution. The “Riders of Doom” content is scheduled to be released sometime in December, but today’s release of a launch trailer for the add-on suggests that the DLC will be released very soon.

Ubisoft and Red Lynx have stated that the new content will include 20 new trials tracks, 10 new skill games, 5 new supercross tracks, and 5 new tournaments. Today’s trailer also reveals that hundreds of new editor objects and a new bike, the Banshee 350cc, will be included in “Riders of Doom.”

Today, Ubisoft released a new trailer for the upcoming “Riders of Doom” downloadable content (DLC) for Trials Evolution. It’s good to see a publisher continue to support a title that was released back in April for only $15. That said, the game did break Xbox LIVE Arcade records, selling over 100,000 downloads on its first day. It’s a distinction the title held until a few weeks later, when Minecraft came along and smashed the record once again.

The new “Riders of Doom” DLC will be released sometime in December. It will include 20 new trials tracks, 10 new skill games, 5 new supercross tracks for multiplayer, and 5 new tournaments. It appears that Trials fans will have enough new content to frustrate them well into next year.

The pending trial was announced this week by Northwestern University, where the research on the test took place. The trial will take place “soon” in Maputo, Mozambique, with nine other countries slated to begin trials after the results of the Mozambique trial are analyzed.

“Our test provides while-you-wait results, and if a child is infected, he or she will begin treatment immediately, which is critical to survival,” said David Kelso, professor of biomedical engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern. “One and a half million infants in Africa and Asia are born to HIV-positive mothers each year, but only a fraction of the HIV-positive infants are identified in time to start treatment. While adults can manage the disease for decades, an infant who isn’t treated likely will die within a year or two.”

The new test is a miniaturized version of the p24 HIV test. It was specifically designed for use in developing nations, is “easy-to-use,” and has a 95% accuracy rate, according to Northwestern. The test detects low levels of core protein 24, which is made by the virus.

To perform the test, medical personnel take a drop of an infant’s blood and place it on a blood-separation membrane, which is then inserted into a small processor. Results come in just 30 minutes, with two black lines indicating the presence of HIV. The cost of the test is currently $15, though that price is expected to drop by as much as half as production volume increases.

The technology behind the test was developed with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is the first product to come out of the Northwestern Global Health Foundation, which Kelso helped found in 2010.

“The Northwestern Global Health Foundation is a new sort of business: a nonprofit biotech company that helps manufacture and deliver health care products that wouldn’t turn enough profit to be attractive to traditional companies,” Kelso said. “If the foundation works, I think it’s an entirely new way to do business.”
