So what happens when Justin Bieber’s ex-girlfriend shows up in Miami wearing a bikini shortly after the release of her new single? Well, once the pictures hit the web, the reaction is swift. Just ask Selena Gomez, who, after her publicity-friendly appearance in revealing swimwear, is currently trending upward. Combine that with the fact that her new single is burning up the iTunes charts, Gomez is doing just fine without her Twitter-dominating ex-beau.

Of course, that’s probably not the reason you clicked this particular story, and so, here are a couple pictures to give you an idea of what the high life looks like:

PopSugar has an extended slideshow, if that’s your thing. As for her “Life without Justin” success, Selena’s “Come and Get It” YouTube video has close to 20 million views:

As for her upcoming album, while she may be single, Gomez makes sure to keep invoking the Bieber name, which is probably a smart marketing move, all things considered. Having some of his popularity vicariously transport over to a career that also targets the “tween” demographic is, if nothing else, shrewd business:

And though she may not be putting energy into dating, songwriting is a totally different story. She admits to penning a track on her new album just for Bieber, which she calls “personal” and adds “I’m sure he’ll love it, too.”

Twitter has just released an update to both their iOS and Android apps that allow you to see Trends from all over the world as well as choose to see Trends specifically tailored to your interests and who you follow. The update also brings a few other good improvements like improved playback on Vine videos.

When accessing Trends on Twitter’s “discover” tab, you’ll now see the option to get “tailored trends” or also to change location. Here’s what Twitter will tell you when you attempt to change location:

“Tailored Trends are based on your location and who you follow which make them more relevant to your interests. If you change location, you’ll see Trends based around geography only.”

You can then pick from dozens of locations – mostly larger cities across the world. if you do so, your trends will simply be based on what’s popular around you – it’ll have nothing to do with who you follow.

Updates to iOS & Android apps: See Trends from all over the world or choose to have Trends tailored to your interests.

— Twitter (@twitter) May 1, 2013

With today’s update, replies to retweeted tweets now show both the author of the tweet and the user who retweeted it. Here’s the full list of updates to come along with version 5.6:

See what’s happening near you or around the world by viewing Trends in hundreds of locations.

Also:
•	Invite friends to join Twitter from within the app
•	Improved playback of Vine videos
•	Replies to retweeted Tweets now include both the author and person who retweeted the Tweet
•	Enjoy a smoother experience due to bug fixes and other improvements.

You can download the updates now in the App Store and on Google Play.

Twitter trends let users know which topics and hashtags are the most popular at any given time. Although they can often be manipulated to boost the popularity of a Twitter-heavy contingent (looking at you, Justin Bieber fans), trends usually give a pretty good gauge of what people are talking about – you know, what’s important.

Trends can be broken down by country and even city. So instead of looking at the trends worldwide, I can look at the trends in Chicago only. This helps users target the conversation and gives the service a more local feel.

And now, Twitter has announced that their Trends are available in a number of new countries and cities.

In all, Twitter has added trend support for over 160 different locations. Some of these are entire countries which have never had Twitter trends before, like Belgium, Greece, Kenya, Norway, Poland, Portugal, and Ukraine. The rest (around 130 locations) are cities getting support for the first time (inside countries that already have Twitter trends).

“Trends are an easy way to find out what people are talking about right now –– around the world, in your country, or in your city. By checking out Trends, you can easily find breaking news and current hot topics that are most relevant to you. To find these new locations, click “Change” in the Trends sidebar on twitter.com, and select the city or country you’re most interested in,” says Twitter.

If you don’t yet have trends in your city of country, don’t worry. Twitter says they are constantly looking to expand trends to more locations. Just last December, Twitter added trend support for 100 new cities.

A flood of stats about Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony has been unleashed upon the web. Among these stats are some looks at trends from Google, Twitter and Facebook.

Google

Here are the top five most searched Oscar nominees, according to Google:

“At the end of the show, Best Picture winner ‘Argo’ held the #6 spot, followed by Ang Lee, Christoph Waltz, ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and Halle Berry,” notes Google software engineer Nemo Tamir.

Google also shared the most searched red carpet dresses:

“This year’s Oscars brought with it a number of unexpected moments that grabbed our attention,” said Tamir. “Early in the show, Seth MacFarlane was visited by William Shatner in full Captain Kirk regalia, come from the future to save Seth’s monologue; at 8:36pm ET, searches for [kirk] spiked to almost 1,500 per minute. Later in the show, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and ‘Skyfall’ tied for sound editing, and people flocked to the web with questions. Searches for [tie] spiked to more than 5,000 per minute, with many people wanting to know [has there ever been a tie in the oscars]. And in a final surprise, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced the Best Picture nominees and opened the winning envelope for ‘Argo.’ Searches for [michelle obama] spiked to 4,500 per minute.”

Twitter

“All in all, there were 8.9 million Tweets about the 85th Academy Awards: 2.1 million during the red carpet, and 6.8 million during the awards show. People at home (and in the audience) tweeted as the night’s most exciting and entertaining moments unfolded,” says Twitter’s Fred Graver.

More Twitter stats:

Best Picture award for Argo: 85,300 TPM
Adele performs “Skyfall”: 82,300 TPM
Best Actress in a Leading Role for Jennifer Lawrence: 71,600 TPM
Best Original Song for Adele: 64,000 TPM
Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Anne Hathaway: 60,400 TPM

Facebook

Facebook says Oscars buzz was at an all time high on the social network this year. According to the company there were 66.5 million Oscar-related interactions on Facebook.

“The event scored a 7.17 on the Facebook Talk Meter, trumping last year’s awards ceremony, and we saw the most buzz in the Northeast (New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut) followed by California,” says Facebook data analyst Allie Townsend. “‘Oscars’ received three times more mentions this year, while the Best Picture nominees racked up twenty times more mentions than 2012. ‘Les Miserables’ had the most Likes of this year’s top films, and despite being set in France, the film’s largest body of fans are in London. It was also the favorite film among women and people ages 13 to 17.”

Django Unchained, however, got the most mentions, Townsend says. It was the “clear Best Picture Choice” among men, she says.

“Best Picture ‘Argo’ was the most-talked about winner of the night, as mentions of the film increased by 2,460% and mentions of Ben Affleck increased by 23,500% as the director, star and producer made his acceptance speech,” says Townsend. “Affleck also launched his new Instagram account from the red carpet and shared behind-the-scenes photos throughout the night, including this one of his name being engraved on Oscar trophy itself.”

Facebook put out the following infographic looking at the trends:

Google revealed on Monday what the top trending searches were during the Super Bowl (US). The top five were:

1. M&M’s
2. Beyonce
3. Baltimore Ravens
4. San Francisco 49ers
5. Colin Kaepernick

Very interesting that “power outage” didnt’t make the list, though Google does mention it as another noteworthy trend. I guess it only had half a game to work with. Ultimately, it ended up ranking eighth out fo the most-searched terms during game time.

Beyonce searches spiked during the halftime show, of course. Searches for Chrysler spiked after the brand’s fourth quarter commercial, Google says.

Google software engineer Jeffrey Oldham says, “As they did in the game, the Ravens narrowly beat out the 49ers as the most-searched team during the game on Google. The most-searched players of the game were Colin Kaepernick, Joe Flacco, Michael Oher, David Akers and Jacoby Jones—thanks to his 108-yard kickoff return.”

“The Harbaugh brothers’ on-field battle has been one of the big stories of the game, so it’s no surprise that viewers took to the web to find more information on these coaches,” he adds. “While John Harbaugh took home the trophy, Jim was the most-searched brother on Google.”

Searches for Super Bowl ads on Google were 55 times higher on Sunday than they were for the same time the previous Sunday. The most searched-for ads were from: M&M’s, Mercedes-Benz, Disney’s “Oz Great and Powerful,” Lincoln, and Audi. Searches for “Gangnam Style” also trended on YouTube, as did searches for Beyonce and Alicia Keys, who sang the National Anthem.

Yahoo also shared some insight into what people were searching for during the Super Bowl on its search engine. Searches spiked for “why did the lights go out,” “superdome power outage,” and “what caused power outage”.

Here’s the top ad-related searches from Yahoo:

1. [dodge super bowl commercial] (God Made A Farmer) – up 1722% during the game on Yahoo!
2. [taco bell commercial]

According to Yahoo, Bar Refaeli was the most buzzed about celebrity featured in a commercial followed by Kate Upton, Kaley Cuoco, Stevie Wonder, Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen. Rogen spiked by 1,045% on Yahoo, while Rudd searches spiked by 668% and Kate Upton searches spiked by 152%.

Fast & The Furious 6 got the most buzz for movie trailers, spiking 827% on Yahoo, followed by World War Z at 78%.

Searches for “beyonce super bowl 2013″ spiked 7,236% on Sunday, searches for Jennifer Hudson spiked 10,802%, and searches for Destiny’s Child spiked 4,000%.

YouTube has just jumped into the year-in-review game, unveiling YouTube Rewind, a channel devoted to the top trending videos of the year across multiple categories.

“This year, Korean Pop music transcended boundaries and took the world by storm. Cover songs, parodies, and “do-it-yourself” music videos from all genres entertained us in countries near and far. And you participated in conversations at a global scale, uploading videos to share ideas on everything from nonprofit campaigns, to political satire, to new and surprising voices and talents. Plus, all over the world, you tuned in for the most up-to-date news footage of presidential elections, natural disasters and more,” says YouTube.

And surprise, surprise: Gangnam Style is your top trending video of the year. Of course, “trending” doesn’t necessarily mean “the most total views,” but it’s important to note that Gangnam Style is rapidly approaching 1 billion views (971.5 million).

The rest of YouTube’s top trending videos list takes us on a trip through 2012 in different areas. Their number two trending video is a cover of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know by “five peeps, one guitar” group Walk off the Earth. And the third top trending video for 2012 was KONY 2012. Imagine that.

Here’s a playlist of all of Youtube’s top trending vids of the year:

You can head on over to YouTube’s Rewind channel for more 2012 nostalgia. But be sure to check out their tribute to this year’s viral hits, featuring members of other famous viral hits:

Want to take a trip through your top moments on Facebook this past year? Well, you’re in luck. Facebook has just unveiled their year-in-review materials, and one of them is a user-specific 2012 Timeline of top stories.

Just log in and go to facebook.com/yearinreview to see your own personalized year in review Timeline for 2012.

The first thing you’ll see is a rotating collage of important photos from the year. For me, Facebook did a pretty good job of capturing memorable moments from 2012. Right below that, Facebook will show you how many friends you’ve added and how many pages you’ve like in the last 12 months.

Under that, Facebook has selected your “20 biggest moments” to display.

According to Facebook, these “big moments” include “life events, posts you’ve highlighted, popular posts you’ve been tagged in, and popular posts you’ve shared.” So your year-in-review Timeline will be a lot better if you’re an active Timeline user – as in someone who manually highlights and removes stories to make it truly personalized. But I’m not really a Timeline tinkerer and Facebook did a great job of highlighting my top life events, photos, and popular updates from the year.

It’s a fun little walk down memory lane, considering you are active enough on Facebook for the Timeline to be populated with relevant and important stories. You can check yours out today.

And don’t forget to take a look at some of Facebook’s Top Trends of 2012.

It’s that time of the year again – cold weather, warm drinks and lukewarm receptions at family gatherings. But the end of year also means something else: it’s time for all of the year-in-review lists to emerge. Today, it’s Facebook’s turn.

Facebook has revealed the top ten trends in 11 categories: Memes, Sports, TV, Politics, Technology, Books, Public figures, Check-ins, Movies, Songs, and Events – basically anything and everything anyone would ever talk about on the social network. And according to the data, Instagram was the most-discussed tech trend of 2012.

The rest of the list, in order: Timeline; Pinterest; Draw Something; iPhone 5; Kindle Fire; SOPA; News Feed; Siri; SongPop.

Facebook recently revealed that SongPop was their #1 game of the year.

In terms of events, the 2012 Election was the top trend. That was followed by the Superbowl, Whitney’s Houston’s death, Superstorm Sandy, and the London Olympics.

Continuing the interest in the election, Barack Obama was your top public figure of the year in terms of mentions. Fittingly, Mitt Romney was number two. Those two were obviously the tops in the Politics category, beating out other election-related terms like “voted” and “four more years.”

Here are some mini infographics for the top media trends, provided by Facebook:

Like tons of other internet properties, Facebook is joining to party and slowly releasing its year-end data. Earlier this month, we learned that the number one Facebook game of 2012 was SongPop. Today, Facebook has released the top 2012 trends for Australian users.

The Facebook data looked at the top ten mention, the top then check-in locations, and the top ten songs. One Direction led the mentions for 2012, while Bon Iver’s Skinny Love led the top songs category. One of those is respectable and the other is terrible. I’ll let you figure out which is which.

Here are then trends from Facebook Australia:

As the year-end best-of lists continue to roll in, Twitter is making their foray in chronicling 2012 with an impressive new round-up site called “2012 Year on Twitter.” The site features a series of top metrics as well as more in depth features about stories that played out on Twitter this year. You can access the year-in-review portal here.

Twitter’s year-in-review hub highlights top tweets, trends, stories, and famous newcomers to the site over the past 12 months. The first section, “Golden Tweets,” highlights the most popular tweets of the year, in terms of retweets and favorites. For instance, you may remember that President Obama’s “four more years” tweet he sent out as the election was decided is the top tweet of the year. Not only that, but it’s the most popular tweet in the history of Twitter. Justin Bieber and the Green Bay Packers’ TJ Lang also had very popular tweets in 2012.

Twitter also highlights the top trends, split into categories. For example, the top “conversation starter” this year was the hashtag #nowplaying. The top trending sports tag was #nfl, and the top trending political tag was #tcot. It shoudn’t surprise anyone that the most talked about country in 2012 was #syria.

Twitter’s year-in-review page also showcases all the new faces that joined Twitter in 2012 – from the realms of TV, movies, politics, music, religion/culture, and more. There are also sections called “Pulse of the Planet” and “Only on Twitter” which look at stories and conversation that happend on the network.

“Every day, we’re amazed and humbled by the many ways in which people use Twitter, which range from simply retweeting to igniting conversations with hashtags (even around lesser-known topics) to sharing spectacular and far-flung views. In 2012, everyone on Twitter brought us closer to moments and places that used to be far away or inaccessible: A Tweet from the bottom of the ocean. Tweets from Mars. An extraordinary view from space of Superstorm Sandy. A quiet backstage moment with a presidential candidate. All of these and millions of other such moments were ours to experience directly wherever we were, in the midst of work or play or travel,” says Twitter.
