Search marketing firms going through the training provided by the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization will be able to pick up a seal of approval after taking courses through the SEMPO Institute.

SEMPO began teaching online courses in search marketing in January 2007. after opening with a course on SEM fundamentals, SEMPO added advanced classes to the mix.

“The Institute certification process will provide interactive agencies that participate in our program with a means of showing they are up to speed on current SEM strategy,” SEMPO Chairman Dana Todd said in a statement.

Agencies will qualify for certification after at least 20 percent of the staff completes at least one course through the SEMPO Institute, with a 75 percent passing grade or better. SEMPO said there will be two levels of certification, based on the percentage of staffers completing courses.

“In doing market research and talking to agencies we found a real desire to have an ‘instant differentiator,’ a seal of excellence that would help an agency distinguish itself against the competition by showing that a significant number of its employees are highly trained and skilled in search engine marketing,” Katie Donovan, SEMPO Institute Business Development Manager, said.

“Agencies told us they liked the idea of certification, given the strong reputation the Institute and SEMPO as a whole have in the marketplace.”

We see a greater need for search marketing now that universal search figures more prominently with the major search engines. Since one can no longer rely on a list of ten blue links being the only options coming up in search results, advertisers will want to know their agency has the acumen to deal with this new search environment.

Through the training program, participants can hone their adCenter knowledge for improving their campaigns. Those who wish to do so may take the adExcellence accreditation exam; US residents who have had an adCenter account for 30 days or longer are eligible to take the exam, which costs $50.

Materials in the adExcellence training program appear as Flash content. They cover six categories:

Introduction to Microsoft adCenter
Getting Started
Targeting
Tracking Ad Performance
Optimizing Ad Performance
adCenter Budgeting and Billing

Not to be outdone by Google or Yahoo, Microsoft lifted the lid on two new search marketing tools and an accreditation program called adExcellence.

The first tool, called Microsoft adCenter Add-in for Excel 2007, is designed to help adCenter customers more easily research keywords for their paid search advertising campaigns.

As the name suggests, it plugs into Excel, and allows users to build keyword lists and plan strategies based on attributes like relevance, historical cost information, and projected volume.

Available after January 8 of next year, the Add-in accesses data from from Microsoft’s Keyword Services Platform.

The other tool is a beta version of a portal called Webmaster Center, which was designed specifically for webmasters and search engine optimizers. Like Google’s Webmaster Central, Microsoft’s site is intended as a resource for webmasters seeking better organic rankings on Live Search.

Microsoft says this includes information about how Live Search crawls and indexes site pages; site map creation and submission; statistics about Web sites currently indexed by Live Search; consolidated content submission guidelines; and new content and community resources.

Microsoft also launched its adExcellence program, which is a training program for marketers looking to become certified adCenter experts. Accredited members will be listed in the adExcellence Membership Directory and will receive an adExcellence logo for use on their Web sites.

Coming off a successful debut of their Fundamentals of Search Marketing course, the training arm of the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization has its Advanced SEO class up and running.

Most encouraging about SEMPO Institute‘s efforts at education has been participation from major search engines in building the courses. SEMPO’s Terry Plank told WebProNews that Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft among others have worked with the Institute on the launch of their newest class.

It’s called Advanced SEO, and offers the next step from the prerequisite Fundamentals course. The fifteen-lesson online course covers a slew of topics, from keyword research and website architecture, to analytics and brand management.

Since participants will have taken the $499 Fundamentals class first, the $1,750 Advanced SEO builds upon the organic search lessons learned there. This allows SEMPO to confidently offer the course to technophiles and non-techies alike.

Catherine Donovan has been working on developing SEMPO Institute as her full-time task since September 2006. We asked her about the main points SEMPO believes will justify the investment one would make with a course.

Donovan highlighted two key points about the curriculum. The material created for it has been peer reviewed. Any issues that need improvement get it before the work becomes part of the course.

Members of SEMPO write the material. The people who are actively working in the industry can address the needs of students better than someone who has just read about search marketing in general.

Their approach seems to be working. Fundamentals students have noted at an 80 percent clip they would recommend that course to others. Plank said the student body have covered a breadth of people, from search marketing novices to professionals who know the field now.

Those students come from a variety of places to SEMPO Institute. The popular Search Engine Strategies conference series has led many to check out Fundamentals; referrals and of course search engine traffic brought people there too.

In May, SEMPO Institute will launch Advanced Search Advertising, covering the paid side of search marketing. SEMPO will continue to update material, and should branch into other courses as areas like social media mature over time.

TechNet Ajax web casts have a ton of Ajax related training videos that can help out security folks, and developer folks better yet, it’s all free.

If you have never used or taken a TechNet web cast, and if you are interested in Ajax, and what Ajax can do for you, this is a great place to start to get your feet wet. The link is here.

Some are good high quality, some are just those things that people need ot know to get their feet wet. Overall though, if you have no money for training, download the web cast and sit back in the office while you do other things and keep the sound track going. The good part about TechNet web casts is that you can sometimes download them, and they have screen caps or live screens of the data that they are covering.

In going through the web site, there are some that will hang, but that could be my bandwidth this morning or something else. Usually restarting the web cast or starting from scratch again for the web cast clears the problem.

The ones that I like the best

The Billy Hoffman series of Ajax training. I am a fan of what Billy does, so having access to five hours of his knowledge is a good thing. The link for that is here. The “live from redmond” series really goes deep into ajax, ajax security, and how to approach some of the issues like cross site scripting and other problems that people who do web app security see on a semi-regular basis.

It is always interesting getting the “real deal” from someone like Hoffman, and actually listening to what he has to say about ajax and ajax security. Some of it we can disagree with, some of it we can’t, and its hard to disagree when you are seeing cross site or other security issues right there on the screen. That’s why the “Live from Redmond” Ajax Security series is so good. Its hard to ignore the examples.

Outside of that, the information is very good, and makes some great background information in Ajax, what the issues are, how to solve some of the issues, and steps that developers, QA, and security folks can take to make sure that their web apps are running the way they were intended to run.

Have you noticed the number of regionalized or small scale search marketing conferences that are popping up?Jill Whalen has been running her High Rankings Search Engine Marketing seminar for a few years now (disclosure: I am a speaker for the Mpls event and my PR agency works with Jill) that is very hands on focused. The speakers all share a very similar philosophy about search marketing so there are not the mixed messages you get at larger events.

Danny Sullivan has started his SMX event (is that name a subliminal play on Search Marketing Sex?) starting in Seattle this summer as well.

There’s also Elite Retreat with a $5,000 price tag that includes: Guy Kawasaki, Aaron Wall, Lee Dodd, Darren Rowse, Jeremy Shoemaker, Kris Jones and Neil Patel. The marketing is getting slick on this one along with the all-star speaker lineup.

Today I read about seodays with Dave Naylor, Greg Boser and Jennifer Slegg which is offering one day site reviews, 2 day seminars and customized seminars. It looks like the first one will be in London or maybe somewhere in Canada.

There are many other regional seminars, but recently there have been more high profile SES/Pubcon speakers getting into the game on a smaller scale.

Are these smaller conferences/seminars competition for SES and Pubcon? Yes and no. SES runs multiple conferences world wide and I believe there will be just one Pubcon conference this year in Las Vegas. Bigger conferences are attractive to companies that want to send their people to a venue with a broader selection of topics and others enjoy them for networking and prospecting.

There’s a tremendous demand for SEO/SEM education these days and staffing is an issue as well. Big conferences are useful the first 1-2 times, but after that, the information may seem redundant to more experienced search marketers. A smaller, more hands on event with legitimately top practitioners could be very appealing.

For conferences like SES and ad:tech, the speaker selection process is an interesting alchemy that uses a combination of popularity/friends/expertise and I think many repeat attendees are tired of the sales pitches and lack of practical, hands on information. Plus there’s no food in the morning!

You know what’s coming next right? A pitch for the Mpls seminar of course!!

Speaking of practical, hands on information, the early bird discount for the Minneapolis High Rankings Search Engine Marketing seminar ends tomorrow, 2/22/07 so get yourself registered. Be sure to use the discount code TOPRANK for another 25% off for Online Marketing Blog readers. That’s about $900 for two days with some very talented SEO/PPC trainers, but only until tomorrow. After that the prices goes up.

Every serious manager and supervisor knows HR seminars and trainings are not just perfect excuses for yet another powerpoint presentation and coffee-and-biscuit break.

These sessions are important precisely because of the ever-changing dynamics of the workplace. We need more of the fine stuff from the people we elect as supervisors and managers if our company is to achieve all its mission and vision statements.

Contrary to belief, HR trainings and seminars are not just mere sessions to be mindlessly attended and later added to one’s resume. Far from being a desirable extra, HR training is essential for any forward-thinking company that values its employees.

Oftentimes, managers, especially first-time managers, often lack the skills and problem-solving ability when workplace conflicts arise. They might haven’t adequately settled into their new position yet, (still fumbling around, so to speak). Which is why, aside from mentoring and sharpening manegerial skills, HR trainings help managers successfully ease into their new and more demanding job opportunities.

Some of the basic challenges of managers that need constant readdressing are:

Personnel concerns Managers must be able to be balance making demands/expectations of their staff and interacting with them like an equal. Good HR training helps managers and would-be managers to handle the team so that each of them works to their full capacity.

A good teammate-manager relationship fosters not only good productivity, but more open and honest feedback among everyone as well. Good feedback encourages the staff and lets them know that they are making progress. At the same time, the staff must also feel free to air out their concerns or grievances.

Handling Job Applications Managers need to be on the lookout for qualified candidates for new job positions in the company. With the right interviewing skill that balance respects and spontaenity, logic and creativity, managers can distinguish the most promising job applicant.

Communication A key skill every supervisor and manager must develop is the ability to communicate effectively. It’s not enough that managers be great at oral and written communication skills, but they must also be good listeners as well.
