Gawker Traffic Reportedly Down 25% Following Design Changes

A lot of sites have been experiencing major crises in traffic over the last week or so since Google’s recent algorithm update aimed at low quality content. Gawker has been hit with a similar problem, but for an entirely different reason.

Gawker Media founder Nick Denton revealed today that the company’s traffic is down by nearly a quarter as a result of the recent widely publicized redesign. 

SMB Website Study: Frequent Updates + Social Media = Greater Traffic

SiteKreator, a small business website builder, has just released the results of their study in which they analyzed 5,000 random websites through 2010. The results revealed that small businesses who update their site content more often receive more traffic on a monthly basis vs sites who make less frequent updates. Additionally, sites which leveraged social media in their online strategies also received more traffic than sites not using social media.

Twitter Launches its Official Tweet Button

Twitter has launched its official Tweet button for publishers to place on their content. There are numerous unofficial buttons out there that publishers have been taking advantage of for quite a while, but now there’s one right from the company that counts tweets no matter how they were tweeted.

Actually, Twitter is working with TweetMeme on this one. TweetMeme has been offering probably the most popular version of the tweet button for publishers. Twitter says TweetMeme will be switching over to the official Twitter button anyway.

StumbleUpon’s Platform Getting Advertisers’ Attention

Earlier this year, StumbleUpon launched its new advertising system, which it said helps cost-effectively deliver advertiser content to targeted audiences, while increasing the opportunity for content to go viral. Since then, the platform has experienced some pretty significant growth.

The company announced today that it has experienced 20% growth since the launch in March, with about 2,000 active monthly customers running about 3,000 campaigns daily.

MapQuest announced that it has expanded its live traffic coverage. It now includes over a quarter-million miles of roads in major North American cities.

MapQuest is now including "key" arterials and city streets. The goal of this is to provide users with more information to make better decisions about alternate cross-town routes.

A number of major media companies are starting to implement tools for third-party authentication for consumers. We spoke with JanRain, which provides a tool called Engage that companies like Tribune Interactive, Meredith, E.W. Scripps, The Dallas Morning News, bizjournals, and the National Geographic Society are all using. New Digg Buttons Keep Traffic With Publishers
