Now that we’ve entered the holiday shopping season, having just finished with the Thanksgiving rushes of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the early results are starting to trickle in, and the reports are good, especially for online retailers.

According to a comScore report, in relation to online retail, spending during Black Friday saw an increase of 26 percent when compared to 2010. The total for online Black Friday spending, by comScore’s numbers, is $816 million. Not only are the numbers promising, but the methods in which online shoppers conduct their business is expanding beyond the home/work computer.

Mobile devices in reference to online shopping is increasing as well. In fact, the rise in mobile technology adoption gives potential online shoppers a degree of flexibility the home computers do not. No longer are you required to be at computer at a certain times, all because of the freedom these mobile devices provide. In fact, the impact of mobile devices in regards to this flexibility have some speculating about the death of Cyber Monday, because shoppers are no longer required to be tethered to a non-mobile computing device:

But the loss of Cyber Monday, which got its name when most people had to go into their offices to shop online, shows how far broadband, and now mobile, have come.

In reference to the loss of Cyber Monday, Giga Om’s article offers an update:

Akamai noted on Monday night that Thanksgiving evening experienced the peak traffic of the holiday season, making this the year that turkey day topped Black Friday’s and Cyber Monday’s peaks.

This makes sense considering the explosive growth of smartphones. With these connected devices, users no longer have to worry about running to their workstation or their home rig to take part in these online sales, and because of the increased accessibility, more and more online shoppers don’t have to wait until they are in front of a computer to participate.

Over at Shop.org, the mobile device holiday shopping increase was forecast thusly:

One quarter of Cyber Monday shoppers anticipate using mobile devices. The real standout this year, of course, is the continued rise of mobile devices for Cyber Monday shoppers: 14.5% of all Cyber Monday shoppers expect to use a smartphone and/or tablet device for at least part of their shopping, double the number we saw last year (6.9%). Among online shoppers this year, however, that’s actually a whopping 23.8%. For a retailer, that’s another golden opportunity to proactively make an offer to a specific customer, especially if that retailer can tap into location-based mobile advertisements with a specific call to action.

Clearly, people want to spend during the Thanksgiving sales season, which kicks off the holiday shopping season on an annual basis. Furthermore, with more and more consumers acquiring mobile devices, it only makes sense that mobile device shopping increases as well.

While this is becoming less and less of an issue, especially for the bigger consumption sites, it is still wise to make sure your site is mobile-friendly, especially if you’re planning on capitalizing on this willingness to spend.

The holidays are a wonderful time of the year, a time when friends and families get together for food, fun, and football. A time to celebrate things like charity and camaraderie. It’s also a time for seemingly unending stress – oftentimes due to the massive undertaking of giant holiday meals. Thing have gotten easier over the past decade, with the proliferation of the internet and the multitude of food sites that have sprung up to help.

So when grandma’s recipe book just isn’t cutting it anymore – here are some online resources to help you make your loved ones happy. Or at least to help you from totally ruining Thanksgiving.

(Note: There are plenty of wonderful, smaller food blogs out there. Look around, go deep into the internet food culture. You can find some amazing little resources that can be highly specialized for your needs. Don’t be afraid to jump off the beaten path when it comes to this sort of thing. This list is a starter list of sorts, with some of the big names in online recipes and food tips)

The New York Times Dining & Wine

This big dog of the food world is doing something interesting this year. They have set up a “Thanksgiving Help Line” that is there to answer reader’s questions on Turkey, Wine, Dessert, Side Dishes and much more.

Readers are asked to submit their query directly on the site or via Twitter, using hthe hashtag #ThanksgivingQs. An example of how the NYT is helping holiday chefs, many of the responses to questions like “Why won’t be cranberry sauce gel?” and “How do I get the lumps out of my mashed potatoes?” are in the form of video tutorials.

Epicurious

Epicurious, and its partners bon appetit and Gourmet, have dedicated part of their site to Thanksgiving, providing links to Thanksgiving essentials, vegetarian recipes, and “pie perfection.” They offer a beginner’s guide to Thanksgiving and have checklists that you can use to make sure you don’t forget anything.

Epicurious also allows you to sign up for email alerts for their “Thanksgiving Countdown” messages.

Chow

Chow has an entire section designated for Thanksgiving recipes. Easy to navigate tabs allow you to browse their best recipes from five years of existence. There are multiple recipes for thinks like stuffing, gravy, pies & tarts, and even cranberry sauce. A pretty awesome bonus section shows you great ways to utilize all of those leftovers.

Food Network

Food Network’s site has also created an Thanksgiving section, where they provides recipes and how-tos for pretty much all of the traditional courses you’ll need. They have a pretty extensive selection of how-to videos in their “cooking school.” And of course, there are recipes and videos from the network’s personalities like Alton Brown and Ina Garten.

Serious Eats

Serious Eats has a basic but useful collection of recipes and tips for a stress-free Thanksgiving. They also provide a drink-pairing guide as well as their “Taste-test” section that tells you which brands of frozen apple pies, stuffing, store-bought gravy, etc. are the best – just in case you don’t have to time to make absolutely everything at home.

eHow Food

eHow Food offers Thanksgiving help in the form of tips on Thanksgiving on a budget as well as tips from “in-house” contributor Rachel Ray. eHow food has plenty of recipes, including some instructional videos like how to set a great Thanksgiving table and how to crave the perfect turkey.

Of course, there are many more outlets out there to help you pull off the big meal. But these are some great places to start. What’s your favorite holiday dish, both to prepare and to eat? Let us know in the comments.

There are few things more American than Thanksgiving Day football, and there are apparently few bands easier to hate than Nickelback. So when those two forces collided, it didn’t take long for there to be some pretty harsh blowback.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Canadian multiplatinum recording artists Nickelback would be playing the halftime show at this year’s Thanksgiving Day NFL game between the visiting Green Bay Packers and the hosting Detroit Lions. According to the Oakland Press, “It’s not known what Nickelback will perform, but the group will be promoting a new album, “Here and Now,” which comes out Nov. 21.”

And things had just started to turn around for the Lions this season…

If you’ve seen discussion of this news on Twitter and Facebook over the last couple days, you probably realize that this isn’t the most popular decision that’s been made in the interest of the NFL.

And now, angry fans have started an online petition at popular site change.org to protest the choice of musical entertainment. The petition asks the Detroit Lions to replace Nickelback as the halftime performance at the all-important Thanksgiving Day game. Here’s the petitioner’s rationale:

This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime.

The petition just reached 1,500 signatures and is growing rapidly.

In the “why people are signing” comment area, here are some of the top reasons:

They could not have chosen a worse band? What are you trying to do to your loyal fans?

Nickelback is the worst band ever.

The Lions are having a remarkable season for the first time in… well, quite some time. *Quite some time.* I honestly understand what a pain in the ass it would be to reschedule this appearance, but please, at least 80% of anyone cognizant of Nickelback’s presence during halftime will be utterly disgusted, whether it’s a legitimate feeling or not. Also you could probably get Kid Rock to do it for free.

Twitter is pretty amused by the prospect of Nickelback playing the halftime show:

You may have read about the online price wars going on this holiday season between Walmart and Amazon. It looks like both companies are doing quite well as a result (not that that is much of a surprise). According to data from Experian Hitwise, Walmart was the top retail site on Thanksgiving Day, and Amazon was the top retail site on Black Friday.

Where did you spend your dollars on Thanksgiving/Black Friday? Share here.

According to Experian Hitwise, among the top 500 Retail Web sites, the percentage of U.S. visits were down 15% on Thanksgiving Day in 2009 compared to Thanksgiving Day 2008, and the U.S. traffic to Black Friday sites on Thanksgiving Day was down 4% compared to 2008.

On Thanksgiving Day, Walmart received 15% of U.S. visits among the top 500 Retail Web sites. This is the fifth year in a row that Walmart was the top visited site on Thanksgiving Day.

Experian Hitwise also shares the following Thanksgiving Day stats:

- Amazon.com was the second most visited with 12.41% of visits followed by BestBuy.com with 6.22%. Target.com was the fourth most visited with 5.63% followed by Sears with 3.78%. (Attached are the top 20 sites for Thanksgiving Day 2009).

- Among the top 20 sites visited on Thanksgiving Day 2009, Old Navy saw the largest increase in visits compared to 2008 with a 59% increase, Amazon saw a 30% increase YoY and Target saw a 28% increase. Walmart had a 9% increase and the Apple Store site saw an 8% increase.

- Walmart was the top site to receive traffic from Black Friday sites on Thanksgiving Day 2009 with an 11% increase in traffic compared to 2008. Best Buy and Target received the second and third most traffic from Black Friday sites. Facebook received the largest increase in visits YoY with a 671%.

- According to Akamai, global retail traffic peaked on the U.S. Thanksgiving Day (11/26/09) at 5,732,966 visitors per minute at around 2pm EST. On the same day, North America traffic peaked at 4,095,242 visitors per minute at around 10pm EST.

So that was Thanksgiving. Then there was Black Friday. Out of the top 500 Retail sites, the percentage of U.S. visits were up 4% versus Thanksgiving Day. Year-over-year the visits were down 9% compared to Black Friday 2008, according to Experian Hitwise. The U.S. traffic to Black Friday sites on Black Friday was up 9% compared to 2008.

Experian Hitwise shared these additional stats about Black Friday:

- The top visited Retail Website on Black Friday 2009 was Amazon receiving 13.55 % of U.S. visits among the top 500 Retail Web sites. This is the second year in a row that Amazon was the top visited site on Black Friday.

- Walmart was the second most visited with 11.18 % of visits followed by Target.com with 5.65%, BestBuy.com with 4.62%. followed by Sears with 2.95%. (Attached are the top 20 sites for Black Friday 2009).

- Among the top 20 sites visited on Black Friday 2009, The Apple Store saw the largest increase in visits compared to Thanksgiving day 2009 with a 110% increase, Staples saw a 47% increase YoY and Dell saw a 40% increase. Amazon had a 9% increase.

- Walmart was the top site to receive traffic from Black Friday sites on Black Friday 2009 with a 32% increase in traffic compared to 2008. BestBuy and Target received the second and third most traffic from Black Friday sites. Among the top 10 sites to receive traffic from Black Friday sites on Black Friday, Target received the largest increase in visits YoY with 110%.

Another research firm, comScore, has provided its own Black Friday stats. They also have Amazon on top, with Walmart in second place. Here’s a look at a couple of their charts:

"Black Friday, better known as a shopping bonanza in brick-and-mortar retail stores, is increasingly becoming one of the landmark days in the online holiday shopping world," says comScore chairman, Gian Fulgoni. "The $595 million in online spending this Black Friday represents the second heaviest online spending day of the season-to-date and a double-digit increase from last year. While this acceleration in spending suggests the online holiday season may be shaping up slightly more optimistically than anticipated, it may also reflect the heavy discounting and creative promotions being put forth by retailers that now encompass the use of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Cyber Monday – the traditional kick-off to the online holiday shopping season – and the subsequent weeks will be the real test for how online retailers fare this season. That said, this is a very encouraging start."

"Much attention has focused on Amazon and Walmart this season, and both retailers performed particularly well online on Black Friday in terms of attracting visitors," adds Fulgoni. "We will be watching closely to see how these retailers perform during these next critical weeks of the season."

Everyone expects Amazon and Walmart to do well during the holidays season. It would really interesting to know how the smaller businesses are doing. Do you run a retail site? How have your holiday sales been thus far? What kinds of promotions have you run? Comment here.

Is there a better way to kick off the Holiday season then slowly dragging yourself out of your tryptophan induced coma to go shopping during the wee hours of the day after Thanksgiving a.k.a. Black Friday?

Sure, Black Friday seems utterly atrocious when thinking about it. I mean you got long lines, rabid shoppers, insane traffic, and bitterly cold weather. Mix that with sleep deprivation and you get a very lethal cocktail of insanity. So why do people put themselves through this monotony?

Well the answer to that is quite easy: It’s the deals.

Although Black Friday got its start sometime during the 1960s, online deals didn’t come into play until around 2000. The reasoning for this was that most people had very slow dial-up connections at home, which made online purchases more of an annoyance, then a convenience. Most people would wait until the following Monday, when they returned to work, to do there online shopping. Utilizing the faster connection of the workplace, people would do their online shopping, thus creating Cyber Monday (often referred to as the busiest online shopping day of the year).

Have you found any good deals online this week? Let us know.

One thing some people might not realize is that you don’t have to brave the crowds to find great deals for your Holiday shopping. Did you know that numerous stores are currently offering Black Friday deals online? That’s right, you could do most of your shopping from the comfort of your own home. Unlike the traditional Black Friday sales, the online deals tend to be more of a "one deal per day" sort of thing. Black-Friday.net offers the following info about this…

"During the entire month of November, stores such as Amazon.com, Walmart, and even eBay will be offering a "Deal of the Day". These deals are just as good as their Black Friday deals, except they are only good for one day! Be sure to check out the stores below to find out what they are offering today."

The site also lists online deals for 16 total stores (with more being added daily it seems), they are: Amazon.com, eBay, Walmart, onSale, Target, Kohl’s, MacMall, Best Buy, HP, Dell, Meijer, Sears, NewEgg.com, Buy.com, Kmart and 6th Ave.

Online Holiday sales might be "old hat" to Amazon, but they’re becoming known for the deals they have during the week of Thanksgiving. The site offers the following description of the weeklong sale…

You shouldn’t have to stand in a long line to get a great deal. We’re searching for the best Black Friday deals everywhere–including deals other stores are planning–so we can meet or beat their prices and bring them to you even earlier. These limited-supply offers will go quickly but we’ll add new ones throughout the day, every day this week, so you can skip the long lines and still save a bundle.

One company that is getting in on the Black Friday goodness is Apple, as they’ve announced a “one-day shopping event” which will surely make it a happy Friday for some shoppers. Apple posted the following teaser to get shoppers stirring…

"Come back to the Apple Online Store this Friday for a special one-day-only shopping event. You’ll find lots of great iPod, iPhone and Mac gift ideas – all with free shipping."

Like we said before, shoppers will go to great lengths to save some money, some more so than others. So, what are some of the best deals that will be taking place on Black Friday 2009 in stores? We’ve scoured through the Black Friday advertisements and have listed the best prices for what surely will be the best selling items.

Black Friday Websites
Two of the more popular Black Friday sites are BFAds.net and BlackFriday.info. Both are relatively the same, as they both feature scans, lists by store, and the ability to save to a shopping/wish list.

Black Friday & Facebook
Black-Friday.net runs a Facebook page, which lists the various Black Friday deals. The great thing about the Facebook page is that users can see the likes and comments, which could aid in the Black Friday planning for Facebook users.

Black Friday & Twitter
CheapTweet.com, a site that lists various deals, runs a very popular Twitter account, which tweets out Black Friday deals.

iPhone Apps
Black Friday? Yeah, there’s an app for that. With TGI Black Friday (iTunes link) you’re never without the latest Black Friday deal news. The best part about the app… it’s Free.

Do you want to tell the world what you’re thankful for? Will the Twitterverse suffice? How about you followers and the few people that go to TurkeyTwitter?

What is TurkeyTwitter you ask? It is a site that was launched yesterday to give those celebrating Thanksgiving a place to see the collective thanks of Twitter users. Sure, you could simply use Twitter Search, and search "thanksgiving," but TurkeyTwitter provides updates and stats about the things people are thankful for. It gathers tweets based on the #turkeytwitter and #thanksgiving hashtag.

In actuality, it’s going to give you a lot more than just what people are thankful for. If anyone tweets anything remotely related to the holiday and includes a simple #thanksgiving hashtag, it will appear, but it is what it is. It’s Thanksgiving, and someone took the time to make a Twitter-based Thanksgiving site, so we’re talking about it. Case closed.

If you follow @turkeystats on Twitter, you can see the top ten thankful items tweeted out. The creators note that the site is just a quick experiment. They even offer advanced apologies if there’s something that doesn’t go well. Don’t worry guys, I think we’ll all sleep tonight if we experience some TurkeyTwitter hiccups.

If you have some time to kill, if you don’t like football, or you just want to know what strangers are thankful for, check out TurkeyTweets.

With Thanksgiving just a few weeks’ away consumers are already starting to search for deals online.

Over the last seven days fifty percent of the top "Black Friday" related search terms include ads, sales and deals, according to Google Insights for Search.

The Google Retail Advertising Blog provides more details. "Interestingly, when we look at Black Friday rising searches over the last 7 days, we see that ‘Early Black Friday’ is the second rising search term, meaning it has grown over 2,000% during this time period with respect to the previous time period."

"It also may indicate that consumers are not only leveraging ‘Black Friday’ and searches to locate promotions on these days, but may be seeking out similar types of promotions and offerings even before Thanksgiving weekend."

Google also offers advice on what types of ads will appeal the most to bargain shoppers. "Text ads should highlight specific price points, discounts, coupon codes, and special promotions. Also, remember to keep an eye on search trends in your own category by leveraging Google Insights for Search."

While the economy boded poorly for brick-and-mortar stores over the holiday weekend leading up to Cyber Monday, Hitwise says business was pretty much booming for online-only retailers.

While the economy boded poorly for brick-and-mortar stores over the holiday weekend leading up to Cyber Monday, Hitwise says business was pretty much booming for online-only retailers.

Free or low-cost shipping, less hassle, less gas, and ability to efficiently comparison shop were also likely factors. Earlier, Hitwise director of research Heather Dougherty noted the general lack of traffic headed toward brick-and-mortar stores in particular on Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and the weekend to follow.

There was an 11 percent decline in visits to online retailers on Thanksgiving Day, a 16 percent decline in traffic to brick-and-mortar retailers. On Black Friday, traffic to the Retail 500 was down five percent year-over-year, with brick and mortar stores down 10 percent. Web-only retailers that day, though, saw a 10 percent spike in traffic.

That trend continued through Cyber Monday. While visits to the top 500 retail sites were down one percent overall when compared to 2007, and brick-and-mortar stores bled visitors by four percent, online-only retailers enjoyed a five percent increase. The big winners were Amazon.com, with traffic increasing by 21 percent on Monday, Walmart.com increasing by six percent. Target.com, BestBuy.com, and Sears.com received the largest share of visitors after Amazon and Wal-Mart.

An interesting development was that while traffic to online retailers increased, traffic to comparison shopping sites and catalog sites decreased—21 percent and four percent respectively. This could indicate either better SEO/SEM on the part of online retailers sending customers directly to them, or better brand awareness in general, or both.
