Pinterest has introduced what it refers to as “more useful pins”. Essentially, they’re adding relevant information to certain types of pins so people can take action on the pins that they like.

For example, if you see some cookies that you are interested in trying to bake, you might be able to see the recipe. If someone posts an interesting movie-related pin, you might be able to see a review.

The company has partnered with a bunch of sites, which will provide this information. There are three types of pins, which will take advantage.

There are product pins for things like clothing and furniture, which include pricing, availability, and where to buy the item. This info is updated on a daily basis. The initial partners for this category include: Anthropologie, Asos, BHLDN, eBay, Etsy, Free People, Home Depot, Modcloth, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Overstock, REI, Sephora, Shopify shops, Shop Terrain, Sony, Target, Urban Outfitters, Walmart, Wayfair, and Zulily.

Next are recipe pins, which include cook times, ingredients and servings. Initial partners for these are: 101 Cookbooks, Better Homes and Gardens, Bon Appetit, Chobani, Country Living, Delish, Epicurious, Good Housekeeping, Leite’s Culinaria, Martha Stewart Living, MyRecipes, Naturally Ella, Nestlé Very Best Baking, Real Simple, Simply Recipes, Skinny Taste, The Girl Who Ate Everything, The Kitchn,What’s Gaby Cooking, Whole Foods Market and Woman’s Day.

Finally, there are movie pins, which include content ratings, cast members, etc. Info comes from Flixster, Netflix and Rotten Tomatoes.

The new pins are only available in the new Pinterest design.

If you think your site has something to contribute in the way that all of these sites do, you can learn more about rich pins and making your own site’s Pinterest experience better here.

In addition to the new types of pins, Pinterest has finally made the ‘Pin It’ button available to mobile apps. You can see it in action in apps from Behance, Brit+Co, Etsy, Fotopedia, Jetsetter, Modcloth, Snapguide, TED, The North Face and Zulily.

Apparently, Seth MacFarlane and Universal enjoyed making loads of money together on the film ‘Ted’, as they are teaming up again to release ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’. The film is being billed as a western comedy, which will see MacFarlane co-write, direct, produce, and star in the project.

According to IMDB, the story will follow a cowardly farmer enlisting the help of a gunslinger to win back the woman who left him. More details surrounding the film have surfaced as well; we know MacFarlane will be playing a sheep farmer named Albert. The film is already packed with star studded talent, as Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Sarah Silverman, and Giovanni Ribisi have all been reported to appear in the film. The movie is slated to release May 30th, 2014.

The movie ‘Ted’ raked in $549 million, which undoubtedly lead to the quick team-up of MacFarlane and Universal so soon after their first work together. Along with the western comedy, there have been rumors that the film company is interested in releasing ‘Ted 2′. There have been no concrete details released concerning this project, however.

As you can see by the clip below, MacFarlane is no stranger in poking fun at cowboys and the west. Though that can really be said of any topic, when dealing with Family Guy.

Today, legendary film critic and icon Roger Ebert died at the age of 70 after a long battle with cancer. On a personal level, this is deeply depressing. I may have read more total words written by Roger Ebert than any other writer in history. The man’s writings on movies, film theory, politics, religion, and more are some fo the most insightful and most beautifully articulated pieces I’ve ever read.

And for the world of film, the loss needs no further explanation.

Check out this TED talk from 2011, in which Ebert discusses the loss of his voice. It’s incredible stuff.

Ebert’s last written words were these, published in an earlier essay about taking a “leave of presence” due to returning health problems.

“So on this day of reflection I say again, thank you for going on this journey with me. I’ll see you at the movies.”

Can’t do much better than that.

Vint Cerf knows a thing or two about the Internet – he helped invent it. So, what does he think about all the doom and gloom that’s directed towards the future of the Internet? He’s not worried in the least.

In a response to Danny Hillis’ concern that the Internet may one day fail, Cerf says the ubiquity of the Internet will be its saving grace. In other words, the Internet’s constant evolution and movement into every facet of our lives will ensure that it stays ahead of any potential threats.

Instead of putting his faith in a Plan B to save the Internet, Cerf says that a Plan C is much more likely to happen. In short, he thinks that something may come along that proves to be far more effective than the Internet. His bet is on quantum communication – an idea that’s just crazy enough to work.

In February of last year, Anonymous threatened to take down the Internet in “Operation Global Blackout.” Needless to say, it was an empty threat, but something similar could one day happen. We could all lose access to the Internet. If that were to happen, would we have a Plan B?

In a TED talk released today, Danny Hillis speaks on the importance of having a Plan B for when and if the Internet is even taken offline:

In the 1970s and 1980s, a generous spirit suffused the internet, whose users were few and far between. But today, the net is ubiquitous, connecting billions of people, machines and essential pieces of infrastructure — leaving us vulnerable to cyber-attack or meltdown. Internet pioneer Danny Hillis argues that the Internet wasn’t designed for this kind of scale, and sounds a clarion call for us to develop a Plan B: a parallel system to fall back on should — or when — the Internet crashes.

Hillis’ Plan B may be closer than we think as we reported in early 2012 on the efforts of a group of hackers and engineers to build a censorship-free Internet that would coexist with our current network. It wouldn’t exactly be a network that billions of people could fall back on if the Internet were to ever go down, but it proves that a Plan B is certainly possible.

3D printing is over 20 years old, but it feels like we’re just finally starting to truly unlock the potential of the technology. The continued march of technology is relentless, however, and some inventors are already thinking about what comes next.

The next big thing may very well be 4D printing, a new technology from Skylar Tibbits, an architect, designer and computer scientist. The core concept behind this new technology is self assembly.

It may sound strange and far out, but it’s actually quite simple. 4D printing is being billed as a process where synthetic objects can change and adapt themselves to the environment. In a recent TED interview, Tibbits compared the process of 4D printing to the process of natural adaptation:

Natural systems obviously have this built in — the ability to have a desire. Plants, for example, generally have the desire to grow towards light and they generate energy from the translation of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide to oxygen, and so on. This is extremely difficult to build into synthetic systems — the ability to “want” or need something and know how to change itself in order to acquire it, or the ability to generate its own energy source. If we combine the processes that natural systems offer intrinsically (genetic instructions, energy production, error correction) with those artificial or synthetic (programmability for design and scaffold, structure, mechanisms) we can potentially have extremely large-scale quasi-biological and quasi-synthetic architectural organisms.

The concept of 4D printing is still pretty abstract, however, so here’s some videos of the process in action to give you an idea of how this works:

4D Printing: Cube Self-Folding Strand from Skylar Tibbits on Vimeo.

4D Printing: MIT Self-Folding Strand from Skylar Tibbits on Vimeo.

It should be stated that 4D printing won’t be the end of 3D printing. In fact, both go hand in hand as 3D printers are helping to create the materials used in 4D printing. It’s not like one is going to replace the other, but rather they help each other reach new heights in innovation.

TED has launched a big update to its iOS app, adding faster speed and streaming subtitles. While users will no doubt appreciate the speed improvements, TED is really excited about the latter feature, which the organization calls “the real star of the show”.

According to TED, the app is the largest content provider to use iOS6′s new subtitles feature on its streaming video service. The subtitles will follow you to Apple TV with Airplay.

“This release is a very important one to us. Our talks are translated by a team of volunteer translators worldwide. For the first time ever, their work is now available on iOS, our largest mobile platform right now,” says TED’s Thaniya Keereepart, who led the update. “The subtitle piece utilizes iOS6′s new HLS services. Our engineers have been working very closely with Apple to make it possible.”

Subtitles are available in 90 languages right from the video player.

Since its introduction, TED talks have become one of the major forces for good on the Internet. The video series featuring lectures from well-known educators, inventors and innovators have gone on to accrue more than one billion views. Now the the Web series is making the jump from the Internet to the public access television.

TED announced today that it’s teaming up with PBS to broadcast a series of lectures called TED Talks Education. The first three speakers lined up are all major proponents of education reform. They are Bill Gates, Geoffrey Canada and Sir Ken Robinson. These speakers will all tackle the challenge of how to combat the increasing number of high school dropouts in our nation.

The first event is scheduled to air on PBS on April 16. The series will be broadcast nationally so everybody will have a chance to see what these men have to say.

AOL co-founder Steve Case has curated a list of ten TED Talks.

Perhaps this is a sign that people are taking it upon themselves to become more educated. TED announced that it has surpassed a billion video views.

“Our most recent metrics show that TED Talks are being viewed at a rate of 1.5 million times a day — which means that a new viewing commences 17 times a second,” TED Staff says on the TED Blog. “We in the TED office cannot thank you enough for helping us reach this milestone of 1,000,000,000 views — nine wonderful zeroes.”

“In 2006, when we first posted six TED Talks online as an experiment, internet video was a new form,” the post adds. “No one knew if people would take 18 minutes to watch ‘taped lectures’ online, and none of us could possibly have predicted the way in which TED Talks would take off over the next few years. What does this tell us? That people want to learn. That people want be inspired. That people are hungry for ideas, and that there’s a bubbling desire not to let the unfortunate truths of our world remain the status quo, but to look for creative solutions. The fact that you — and your fellow curious minds around the globe — keep coming back for talks day after day is truly astounding. Consider us humbled.”

The post itself includes an interactive “Great Moments in TED Talks” graph, which will point you to various, memorable videos (you’ll have to click over to the post to actually use it):

TED doesn’t discuss other channels through which its talks can be accessed (such as Netflix and the Science Channel), so there are likely plenty more video views that aren’t even being accounted for.

I’d like to see some new stats on Khan Academy video views.

TED has also launched a new section on its site called Playlists, which are curated collections of talks on topics that users have consistently shown the most interest in. If you sign in, you can start a playlist, and it will save exactly where you left off, so you can pick up from there the next time. There are lists curated by Ben Affleck, Jill Bolte Taylor, Reggie Watts, Bill Gates and Glenn Close, among others.
