Anytime technological elements are integrated into conventional culture, it’s exciting for those of us in the tech industry. It’s even more thrilling when technology is applied to the entertainment industry, such as the case of the new film Source Code that opens in theaters today.

Can you name any examples in which technology was applied to entertainment? Let us know.

The sci-fi thriller is about an American soldier named Captain Colter Stevens that wakes up in the body of a stranger. Played by popular star Jake Gyllenhaal, Capt. Stevens finds himself involved with a government program called “source code” and is tasked with finding the bomber on a Chicago commuter train.

Through his mission, he meets Christina Warren, played by the lovely Michelle Monaghan, and the two fall in love. As if casting Jake Gyllenhaal as the lead role in the film wasn’t enough to draw the ladies, this love story is also intertwined into the action.

In terms of technology, the title alone suggests a digital element. The film also includes a social gaming aspect that is based off the “source code” computer game in the movie.

“The idea of the source code in the movie is that it’s a computer game, and that off that computer game, different tangents are created. And, you affect the world as a result of that game… the computer game that’s actually in reality… on the Internet, is the same sort of idea,” said Gyllenhaal.

Powered by Microsoft Tag technology, the game allows users to become part of the mission and connect to the film in a socially interactive way. As Monaghan explained to us, the users that play the game become part of the website, which, she believes, creates a real connection with the audience.

Gyllenhaal also told us that the game gives users a valuable opportunity to create their own story on top of the one told in the movie.

“If we can get people on the Internet involved in the story… there are so many possibilities in even telling other stories… creating even another movie based on the ideas that were created from the game,” he said.

Another element that further linked Source Code to the tech industry was the fact that it premiered at SXSW. Director Duncan Jones said he loves the show because it attracts people that genuinely love film (not to mention a whole bunch of techies that love movies too). He also premiered his film Moon at the show in 2009.

Would you like to see more films that integrate technology?

For Facebook, it wasn’t a great way to start the weekend – the site’s home page source code was posted online for all to see. On the bright side, data belonging to Facebook’s many users appears to be completely safe and unaffected.

Following that revelation, we should share more (relatively) good news – it was the company’s own mistake, not a hacker’s tinkering, that caused this disclosure, according to spokeswoman Brandee Barker. Barker popped in on a TechCrunch conversation to write, “Some of Facebook’s source code was exposed to a small number of users due to a bug on a single server that was misconfigured and then fixed immediately.”

And so it shouldn’t be especially devastating that the code was posted on Facebook Secrets (a blog that appears to have been created for the sole purpose of publishing this information). Barker nonetheless asks that no one else reprint it, however.

This sort of occurrence is becoming something of a trend – in the past two weeks, information has leaked regarding Facebook’s revenue and its advertising rates. The social network has also gotten some unwanted attention over sexual predators, and lost a number of advertisers due to a mix-up involving the BNP.

The source code leak isn’t as potentially damaging as those last two stories, but it’s still not the best thing for Facebook’s reputation.

This isn’t a chapter in the CVS versus Subversion debate, but a look at places online to view useful pieces of code.

Useful is probably the operative word in the article by Miss Coding Answers, Esther Schindler. Her report on resources for locating source code online could point a programmer toward just what one needs to spur a solution to a problem.

The new source code search engine Krugle received a mention in Schindler’s group of online references. Krugle still operates in a limited beta, but promises that it will make programmers more productive with its approach to source code search.

Krugle’s interface for code search allows the visitor to select from several languages, with C, C++, and C# among them. The query can look for code in any area, or be restricted to sifting through source code only, or functions or classes.

Koders provides a couple of ways to find source code. Its publicly available search engine can be implemented via plugins with the Eclipse 3.0 and above or Visual Studio.NET 2003 or 2005 IDEs.

C Source Search offers a utilitarian front end that makes Google’s look like Yahoo in comparison. But the search engine works fast, and allows users to define their queries through a dropdown box of options like functions called, function arguments, and more.

On the Code Project web site, a variety of content including code snippets and articles related to C++, C#, and .NET may be accessed after completing a free membership.

Those joining may also select from a variety of email newsletters and participate in code-related forums hosted by the Code Project, which was organized as a community of Visual Studio .NET developers and is part of Microsoft’s Code Wise Community too.

Tools and resources like the ones listed demonstrate a significant change from the old days of programming, where email and bulletin boards served as the only methods of collaboration.

Code search engines may have to prove themselves with a new generation of coders, but those engines may become to programming what web search has become to the utility of the broader Internet to users.
