It’s no secret that search and social are overlapping more and more. In fact, Ted Ulle of Converseon told us last year that he believed the two would eventually unite and be called something like, integrated media marketing, or IMM.

Bing Spreads Facebook “Liked Results”

People who use both Facebook and Bing should soon become more familiar than ever with the concept of "social search."  The integration of Facebook "Likes" into Bing’s results is continuing so that searchers can see which sites have earned their friends’ approval.

Facebook Continues to Improve in Search

I wrote an article a couple months ago, asking: What if Facebook goes search while Google struggles to go social? I looked at some of the things Facebook has done related to search, and made the case that the social networking giant has a lot of potential for becoming a bigger player in search in general.

Wajam Makes Google and Bing Results More Relevant

Personalization is one of the key components of search relevancy. It’s not the only component (Google uses over 200 signals for a reason), but it’s a pretty big component. If results are tailored to you specifically, there’s a good chance they will often provide relevance to you. One of the best ways to achieve personalization through search is to get you results based on your established connections with other people. Google knows this. This is why Google is putting more emphasis on social search.

Google Social Search Improves, Still Has Major Hole

Interestingly enough, just after I wrote about how Greplin had some social search benefits that Google is lacking, Google announced that it has updated its own social search. Google social search results will now appear mixed throughout the organic results, as opposed to just at the bottom, as they have done in the past.

Earlier this week, Greplin announced it had raised a new $4 million from Sequoia Capital, and revealed that it might open up to the public this week. Now it has. Until now, it has been in closed beta, and now everyone can see what it’s all about.

Greplin Shows Promise In Areas of Search Where Google is Failing

I recently wrote a lengthy post about how content is flooding the web, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for any one search engine (including Google) to keep up and deliver the best possible results at all times. Google does a great job for a lot of queries, but the company knows it needs to get better. That’s why they’re putting a new focus on content farms.

A Look at Social Signals in Search
· 1

Late last year both Google and Bing announced they are both using social signals as part of the ranking algorithm. Those of us who have been in the game a while have long suspected this, but it’s nice to see it come from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. So, as a search marketer, what signals might they be looking at and what are some ways we can leverage to our advantage?

Greplin is Real Personalized Search
· 1

There’s a new kind of personalized, social search available that may trump any effort we’ve seen from Google to date in this corner of search.

Greplin is a new site that searches through "all your online data in one place, really fast" – or at least your the online data you have in the services that it supports, which is likely far from all of your online data. Still, the concept behind the site is pretty noteworthy, and it will likely add more services as time goes on.
