From time to time, we get a reminder of the true power of social media, and the fact that sometimes that power is used by evildoers. The latest example comes a CNN report about a Facebook "hit list".

According to CNN’s Arthur Brice, three teenagers in Columbia, who were on a 69-name hit list posted on Facebook, have been murdered in the past ten days. He reports:

The purpose of this system is to protect the experience for people targeted by these campaigns.  We’re constantly working to improve our systems and are taking a closer look at this one."

LinkedIn has announced the launch of LinkedIn for iPhone version 3.2, which the company says makes it easier to stay up to date and find important changes happening in your professional network.

Facebook Creeps Up the Charts as 178 Million Americans Watch Online Video

comScore released its Video Metrix data for July today. According to this, 178 million people in the U.S. watched online video content during the month, watching an average of 14.7 hours per user.

During the month, Facebook moved up from the fourth position to the third position behind Yahoo properties, and of course Google properties at number 1. Facebook accounted for 46.6 million viewers.

LinkedIn Adds New Features to Recruiter

LinkedIn has launched a couple new features for LinkedIn Recruiter, aimed at making it easier to manage projects and talent. They have added one-page project management and the ability to set reminders on profiles.

Facebook Acquiring Search Company with Google Connections

According to a report from Kara Swisher at Boomtown, Facebook has acquired a company called Chai Labs, though this has yet to be confirmed by either company. Also not confirmed is the price, but it is estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 million.

Swisher speculates that the acquisition is more focused on acquiring talent, which would certainly fall in line with past Facebook acquisitions.

LinkedIn Gives Group Managers New Powers

LinkedIn has launched some improvements to how groups are moderated. There are six basic changes.

Group managers can now delete threads directly. This helps them actively fight spam by deleting content from the "more" tab in the thread.

Facebook is launching a new live video cahnnel today called Facebook Live. This is the company’s official live channel, broadcasting from Facebook Headquarters in Palo Alto.

"Facebook Live will provide a deeper, more interactive look into what’s happening at Facebook," a representative for the company tells WebProNews.

Twitter Launches its Official Tweet Button

Twitter has launched its official Tweet button for publishers to place on their content. There are numerous unofficial buttons out there that publishers have been taking advantage of for quite a while, but now there’s one right from the company that counts tweets no matter how they were tweeted.

Actually, Twitter is working with TweetMeme on this one. TweetMeme has been offering probably the most popular version of the tweet button for publishers. Twitter says TweetMeme will be switching over to the official Twitter button anyway.

Will a Redesign Provide MySpace With a Fresh Spark?

MySpace has a new design for the user home page, which is available today on an opt-in basis, but should be rolled out completely by August 19th.

MySpace tells WebProNews, "The new user homepage prominently displays the activity stream and simplifies the content discovery experience.  As users log-in to MySpace, there is a prompt to opt-in for an early look at the new homepage."

Why Amazon, Google and Facebook Will Drive More Online Sales for Businesses

A couple weeks ago, Amazon launched a new feature that lets users tap into their Facebook network. Users can find recommendations from friends, see upcoming birthdays and their friends’ wishlists, find gift ideas based on Facebook profiles or get purchase ideas from profiles based on friends with similar interests. This has the potential to be very powerful, and might in fact be indicative of how social media will drive e-commerce going forward. 

Facebook Gets 1 in 6 UK Page Views

According to research from Experian Hitwise, Facebook accounts for one in six page views in the UK. It’s the second most visited site.

In July, Facebook made up 7.14% of all UK Internet visits, according to the firm. It accounted for over half (54.48%) of all visits to social networking sites. Google UK was the top dog at 9.59% of visits.

Twitter Launching Another User Discovery Tool? Doesn’t Look Like It.

Update: It turns out that the shout out account is just an internal one for Twitter employees. Twitter gave The Next Web a statement saying, "W we can say is that it’s not a product. It’s an internal account where Twitter employees ‘give props’ to each other. " They didn’t acknowledge the TwitterOnNotice account, but it’s likely an internal deal as well.
