Newt Gingrich and the fine folks at Gingrich Productions are puzzled. Truly puzzled. Just what the hell do you call a phone that has apps, lets you take pictures, and allows you to browse the interwebs?

“Think about it. If it’s taking pictures, it’s not a cell phone. If it has, um, a McDonald’s app to tell you where McDonald’s is based on your GPS location, that’s not a cell phone. If you can get Wikipedia or get Google, that’s not a cell phone. If you can watch YouTube, that’s not a cell phone – or Netflix…think about it.”

Apparently, Gingrich wants help in deciding what we should call these futuristic devices. Here’s what he has to say on his YouTube channel:

To call this a “cell phone” or a “handheld computer” fails to capture the change that has taken place. It is a change in kind, not just a change in scale, and just as drivers of the earliest cars called them “horseless carriages”, our language has not caught up. So having failed for several days to come up with an adequate term for the device we call a “cell phone,” we want to open the discussion up to you. Let us know in the comments what you think we should name it, and we’ll feature the best ones in a future newsletter.

It’s a smartphone, Newt. A smartphone. I kind of get what you’re saying, but it’s a smartphone.

Check out the bizarre video below:

Windows Phone fans on Verizon were disappointed last year to learn that the Nokia Lumia 920, ‘the” Windows Phone to have, would be exclusive to AT&T. They had to settle for the underpowered Lumia 820 or go with HTC’s 8X line. Good things come to those who wait, however, and that wait will soon be over.

Nokia announced today that its bringing an updated version of the Lumia 920 exclusively to Verizon. The new hardware is called the Lumia 928, and it features a number of new features that may have AT&T subscribers feeling a tinge of jealousy.

The Nokia Lumia 928 comes equipped with a 4.5-inch OLED display with a 1280×768 resolution, 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 CPU, and an 8.7MP camera compete with Xenon flash. It also features the same image stabilization software that made the original Lumia 920 a hit with AT&T subscribers.

“Whether you’re attending a party, a concert or a sporting event with friends, the Nokia Lumia 928 excels at capturing high-quality video, audio and blur-free photos of life’s most share-worthy moments,” said Matt Rothschild, vice president, Nokia North America. “Verizon Wireless customers, we heard you and the wait is over – we’re excited to offer a Nokia flagship smartphone, specially designed and optimized for the nation’s largest 4G LTE network.”

Those looking for a more visual tour of the phone can check out the below video from Nokia:

A report is out from the Wall Street Journal today, indicating that Amazon is working on a new line of hardware products, which includes a smartphone with 3D display capability, an additional smartphone, and an audio-only streaming device. These are in addition to the previously rumored set-top box. Collectively, the report (which cites people familiar with the company’s plans as the source) says, the projects are known as Project A, B, C and D or “The Alphabet Projects” and are in development in Amazon’s Lab126 facility.

The one smartphone would be able to display 3D images without users having to wear glasses, and would use retina-tracking technology to let people use their eyes to navigate through content, which would appear to float above the screen like a hologram, according to the report. The device would reportedly support 4G LTE and would come with Qualcomm chips.

Finally, the Journal’s sources suggested that Amazon’s efforts could lead to a streaming music service that would compete with the likes of Pandora and Spotify, and presumably accompany the aforementioned audio-streaming device. They also indicated that the company wants to release some of the offerings in the coming months, but they could be abandoned if financial or performance concerns become too great.

We’ve been hearing rumors about Amazon smartphones for quite some time. Speculation has been happening for years. Frankly, it would make a great deal of sense alongside its Kindle and Kindle Fire devices as the company increasingly competes with Apple and Google.

In March, rumors heated up that Amazon planned to launch a Kindle Phone in Q2.

The U.S. launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is imminent and Android fans are clamoring to get their hands on the Korean manufacturer’s latest flagship Android device. Anyone hoping to use the phone to store pictures, audio, and video, however, had better have an SD card handy.

Geek.com got its hands on an S4 this week and are now reporting that the smartphone will come with over 7GB of Android and Samsung software pre-installed. For perspective, that’s nearly half of the storage found in the 16GB version of the S4.

It’s been clear for a while that Samsung has been focusing its development and advertising on software. The company is trying to differentiate itself from other smartphone manufacturers now that Android device hardware has caught up with, and in some cases exceeded, Apple’s iPhone. Eye-catching software is a way to do that, but with it comes software bloat and apps that seem nice but are rarely used in practice.

The good thing is, Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones are also popular among the Android modding community. Modders have already rooted some versions of the Galaxy S4 and are working to unlock the bootloader for versions of the phone that are locked by U.S. carriers (such as AT&T). Once rooted, Samsung’s Galaxy devices have access to a wide variety of roms to choose from that do not come pre-loaded with crapware.

Nearly a decade ago, Apple proved that advertising was key in getting consumers hooked on their brand. Memorable iPod commercials used color and indie music to create Apple’s new image as the company that sells the best portable electronics. It’s for that reason that following advertising trends in the mobile industry are a bit more interesting than, say, ads for fast food restaurants.

Today, Samsung released a new TV ad that the Korean company will use to try and sell the Galaxy S4 to consumers. The ad, which can be seen below, is fairly straightforward, much like the ads for the device Samsung has already released. It briefly highlights the phone’s larger, clearer screen and thinner profile before moving on to highlighting the software features Samsung has created for the device.

Actually, the ad is rather boring compared to Samsung’s ads for the Galaxy S3. Last year, the company focused on going after the competition directly, implying that Apple loyalists are sheep and making fun of those who wait in lines at the Apple store for new products. There’s little doubt that the ads increased Samsung’s profile in the U.S. and helped the Galaxy S III ship over 50 million units, and the return to boring feature-heavy ads is a bit disappointing.

With Smartskin Condoms for Smartphones, you can keep your phone safe from rain, sand, or any other unsavory materials that it may come into contact with.

Earlier today, T-Mobile revealed that its original Samsung Galaxy S4 launch date has been pushed back from April 24 to April 29. The carrier blamed “an unexpected delay with inventory deliveries” as the cause.

Now, it seems that T-Mobile’s supply difficulties were a sign of things to come.

Samsung has issued a statement to Bloomberg making it clear that supplies of its new flagship Android smartphone will be short for weeks after its release.

The statement:

“Due to overwhelming global demand of Galaxy S4, the initial supply may be limited. We expect to fulfill inventory to meet demands in the coming weeks.”

Pre-orders for the Galaxy S4 are already being taken by AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular and some retail locations. (Consumers might want to steer clear of pre-ordering at Best Buy, though, as the store has a history of overbooking smartphone pre-orders.)

Over the past two years, the Galaxy S series has begun to dominate the Android landscape as the only Android smartphones that regularly put up sales numbers even in the ballpark of Apple’s iPhone sales. Being unable to meet high demand is a challenge that Apple has dealt with for years now, and one that Samsung will have to contend with now that it is Apple’s largest rival. Though Samsung is the largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world, even its prodigious manufacturing capabilities can’t keep up with demand for the next Galaxy-branded smartphone.

Now Geeksphone is finally ready to start shipping out Firefox OS dev units.

Engadget reports that Geeksphone will start selling the Keon and Peak Firefox OS dev units next week. The Keon will retail for €91, while the Peak will retail for €149. It seems cheap, and that’s because developers will be getting cheap phones. The hardware isn’t going to win any awards and it isn’t meant to. Firefox OS hardware is targeting developing markets, and the cheap price reflects that.

If you do want at least a little power, you’ll want to go with the Peak. It’s a mid-range smartphone with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and a 4.3-inch display. The Keon only has a Snapdragon S1 so developers will have to get a little creative when designing apps around the lower end of the hardware spectrum.

Thankfully, Geeksphone will be selling the phones worldwide instead of just in the countries where Firefox OS will be launching. Developers in the U.S. will be able to build apps to take advantage of the increasingly lucrative smartphone market in developing countries.

If you can’t afford or don’t want one of Geeksphone’s smartphones, you can always use the Firefox OS simulator. The simulator piggybacks off of your Firefox desktop installation to emulate the Firefox OS experience on the desktop. From there, you can test and debug any HTML5 apps you may have in the works.

AT&T was the first to announce pre-order details for the Galaxy S4 so it was assumed that it would also be the first carrier to get Samsung’s new flagship device. That’s actually not the case as T-Mobile will be getting it next Wednesday – almost a week before AT&T gets the device.

T-Mobile announced today that the Galaxy S4 will be available on its network starting April 24. The phone will cost $150 upfront, and the rest will be paid off in monthly installments of $20 over the next two years. The $20 installments will be added onto your monthly bill, and will be removed once the phone is paid off.

“Samsung has a proven track record of delivering the ‘Next Big Thing’ in smartphone innovation,” said John Legere, president and CEO, T-Mobile USA. “By combining our bold, Un-carrier moves — no restrictions, no limits and an unbeatable value — with Samsung’s leading-edge technology, you’re going to get the most from your Samsung Galaxy S 4 at T-Mobile —hands down.”

The main advantage of going with T-Mobile over other carriers is its unlimited 4G data plan. For $70 a month, subscribers will get unlimited talk, text and 4G data. T-Mobile’s Galaxy S4 will have an LTE chip in it so it will be able to jump onto T-Mobile’s LTE network once the carrier brings it to more markets.

Unfortunately, unlike every other carrier, T-Mobile will not be offering pre-orders on the Galaxy S4. If you want one, you’re going to have to order it online as soon as it becomes available on April 24. If you prefer to buy your phones at physical retail locations, the S4 won’t be available until May 1.

Twitter is all about gut reactions and snappy statements. The very nature of the social network requires that people have access to it all times. This is leading to an increasing number of people using Twitter on mobile devices.

In a new survey conducted by Strategy Analytics, the firm discovered that Twitter users are migrating from the desktop to mobile devices at an ever increasing pace. The latest report – “Social Network Profile: Who Uses Twitter?” – surveyed 6,500 people from the U.S. and Europe. The survey found that the number of people sending out tweets from a desktop computer decreased from 77 percent to 64 percent in just eight months. During the same period, the number of people tweeting from mobile devices increased from 56 percent to 71 percent.

“The immediacy of Twitter communications requires devices which are close to hand at every waking moment,” notes David Mercer , VP, Digital Consumer Practice. “By definition this suggests mobile phones and tablets should be preferred devices for Tweeting and the survey evidence points clearly in this direction.”

Interestingly enough, the survey found that mobile Twitter use is highest in the UK with the U.S. coming in second. Italy, France and Germany round out the top five respectively. As for demographics, the survey found that Twitter is most popular among the affluent, as well as teenagers and students.

The demographic findings could explain why Facebook is losing popularity among teenagers while Twitter’s own popularity is only increasing. It could also explain why celebrities like Justin Bieber are so popular on the service.
