We put wikis in the top left, email in the bottom left and IM in the bottom right. He described that at the top right is a collaboration sweet spot, but a place that is very hard to start off with. You create something to the left or below it and try to evolve it. You could easily put Twitter and Socialtext Signals in the top right. Twitter in effect evolved out of eariler learnings from blogging. Signals was an evolution of a social software platform. Good theory, and the point is doing new things in real time is hard.

Today SlideShare launched Zipcast, a web conferencing product that is fast, simple and social. Its a natural evolution of what SlideShare has been, a new way to asynchronously share slides. Its new not just in how it is integrated into the fabric of the real time social web. Building a collaboration solution on top of a thriving professional sharing community with millions of presentations viewed by over 45 million people per month is decidedly new.

If you are in marketing, you can host social webinars with promotion being a byproduct of using it. If you are in sales, you can launch a pitch immeadiately without the complexity of setup and asking someone to install a download. If you simply have an idea to share, there is no stopping you because it is free for public and viral meetings.

And what I really like about is it is web conferencing actually on the web.

Running quite a bit late – try to serve a three-course lunch to so many people in only an hour is the culprit.

First presenter is communication measurement guru Angela Sinickas who has just started speaking on audience segmentation. Then I’m on – which is why I’m at the top table now – to present on how technology can hep energize internal communication.

I shall probably have one of my PowerPoints (probably this presentation or perhaps yesterday’s workshop) up to Slideshare in a couple of days. Slideshare is the new service that lets you share and discover slideshows, now in beta and for which I just received an invitation to join.

Very interesting presentations this morning from Euan Semple, Paul Charles of Virgin Atlantic, Monika Stafford of Lloyds TSB and Mike Love of Microsoft UK. Worth more than just a passing mention here so a post to come after the conference.

It is easy to embed a presentation and player within a site, blog or wiki. This one is of my Keynote at Networld/Interop, a good companion to the video. I’ve been playing with the Alpha and really have to applaud Rashmi (you may know her from Dcamp), Jonathan and the gang at Uzanto.

You upload your Powerpoint (PPT and PPS formats) or OpenOffice (ODP format) slides into My Slidespace with a familiar title, description and tags. The flash player is fast and intuitive.

Slides are findable by search (the content of the presentation is indexed), Latest, Popular, Featured, Profiles and Tags (Latest, Popular this week and Popular all time). Here is an RSS feed of the latest.

What’s also fascinating is their servers are backed by Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service). The other week when Socialtext 2.0 launched with a large-file webcast, we got Techcrunched and were worried about the load on our servers. After a little scrambling in IRC, Pete Kaminski leveraged S3, and problem solved. In this case, SlideShare has web serviced their scalability. An interesting model to watch, and good thing if this thing is a sudden hit.
