Microsoft debuted their SkyDrive app yesterday for iPhone and Windows Phone. For those not yet familiar with it, SkyDrive is Microsoft’s cloud service you can use to access your documents, notes, photos, etc. from any computer. SkyDrive is already integrated into the Windows Phone OS but this app simplifies the process of uploading and sharing documents for people who rely pretty heavily on the service. As with most cloud services, SkyDrive is a great way to avoid using up your phone’s hard drive space with superfluous files. It’s an easy service to use when you need to share files with someone and now Microsoft has improved the accessibility of SkyDrive for many smartphone users.

Aside from the general UI difference inherent to the phones, the app works very similarly on iPhones and Windows Phones. As of right now, the SkyDrive app is available everywhere that Microsoft offers the Windows Phone though they hope to make it available in more regions. No word yet if Android devices will be getting any SkyDrive app love, but that remains to be seen.

The SkyDrive team have provided some walk-through tutorial videos for both of the Windows Phone and iPhone.

At first glance, the SkyDrive app appears to be a suitable and competitive alternative to Apple’s iCloud as well as with third party apps like Evernote. Among the many file sharing cloud services out there, how many of you already do or are planning to make use of Microsoft’s SkyDrive app?

Put a free service on the Internet, and someone will try to take advantage of it. The same thing happens in the physical world, of course, and even in cartoons.

SkyDrive drew lots of unwanted attention from spammers engaged in the usual drug-selling schemes, according to security vendor McAfee. Spams containing an HTML file linked to SkyDrive, and then redirected to the drug site.

Several features, like unique URLs, a blacklist-proof domain, and a price of free make it appealing to criminals. Though McAfee had seen SkyDrive abused before, this latest campaign took on a much larger scale.

“The number of times we trapped each URL was interestingly low for such a big campaign,” said Chris Barton at the Avert Blog. “I

Microsoft’s Windows Live-branded online file storage service received a new moniker as the beta opened up to a broader audience. SkyDrive allows people to store files and share them with friends or the public.

In simpler terms, it looks like they have made a pretty drag and drop interface for a FTP server, with an easy way to set permissions. They made plenty of storage space available for potential users, with 500MB accounts available.

Users need a Windows Live ID to access the SkyDrive account. Files can be placed into shared folders, and each person will need a Windows Live ID to read or add/delete files, depending on the permissions given to them.

Public folders function as described. The folder owner can share a link to a file in the folder with others as desired. Those visitors receive read access to the content.

The SkyDrive Team posted the main changes they have made to the service, based on feedback from beta testers:

• An upgraded look and feel – new graphics to go along with your new features!
• “Also on SkyDrive” – easily get back to the SkyDrives you
