You might call it a "flame war," in the traditional Internet sense, but that’s hardly accurate.
Search engine companies are out of luck, at least for the time being; the British government has announced that it will not support “a change to the UK E-commerce Regulations which would give greater legal protection to search engines and other intermediaries.” A European Commission review will decide the matter instead.
If you do any research on SEO you’ll find this statement repeated more then any other – “make sites for users not for search engines.” It even appears in the the guidelines of the webmaster help center right on Google.com. It’s one of the core fundamentals in what’s considered “white hat” SEO or SEO that conforms to all of the search engine guidelines in the interests of improving the web.
