If you’re a Facebook user with a few hundred friends, it’s extremely difficult to keep track of all of them. And sometimes, you’ll be unfriended – it’s just a sad fact of life. Whether you piss someone off or simply become irrelevant to their social sphere, theres a good chance that any Facebook user will lose multiple friends every year.

Of course, Facebook doesn’t offer an inline method to let users see when they are unfriended. But now, you can not only see a list of everyone who has unfriended you, but you can get notifications right when it happens with a new script called Unfriend Finder.

And it’s totally legit. It’s not one of those scams that have been going around for a couple of years that end up just spamming the hell out of your friends.

The script was created by Edouard Gatouillat and works with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari. It’ll simply install automatically on Chrome, but Firefox users will have to add-on Greasemonkey before installing it.

When the jerk unfreinds you, you’ll get a notification within the new “Unfriends” box appearing on the top right of your Facebook page. You’ll also get a notification to the actual Facebook notification tray:

Once you click on “unfriends,” you’ll see a list of everyone who has unfriended you:

The script allows you to see who has deactivated their profiles, lets you manage your sent pending friend requests and it also shows you who has rejected your friend requests. It’s important to note that it’s not retroactive, meaning you won’t be able to see who unfriended you before you installed the script.

This script allows users to do something they’ve wanted to do for a long time. Vindictiveness just received some major help.

In his post about Facebook disabling his account, uber-blogger and Facebook tart Robert Scoble admits that he was doing something that breached the site’s terms of use — specifically, he was running a script that accessed the social network and “scraped” data from it.

As a result, he got a letter from a Facebook minion telling him that his account had been disabled, asking him to describe his recent activity, and asking him to refrain from any such activity in the future.

It’s obvious why Facebook would have such a rule: scraping data using automatic scripts not only puts a load on the site’s servers, but gives potential competitors the ability to potentially suck out the entrails of the social network and move them somewhere else. The interesting part of this whole affair, of course, is that the entrails in question — the engine that makes Facebook such a hot property — are the contacts and information belonging to people like Scoble.

The big question here — which the Scobleizer has cleverly put himself at the centre of — is: Who does that data belong to? It might have been collected and organized in the way it has because of Facebook’s tools, and he obviously agreed to the terms of use that he has since broken, but there’s no question that the information itself should belong to Scoble (and the rest of us). So what rights should he have when it comes to removing that data from a site like Facebook? And who gets to decide?

The bottom line, I think, is that Facebook should make it easier for people to move their data from Facebook to somewhere else without scraping the site using bot-scripts. Whether Scoble’s symbolic gesture will help to push them in that direction remains to be seen.

Occationally I talk to progressive companies that have taken the leap into social media and have implemented full social communities with lots of features that enable users to interact on the site, but when I look at their site I discover a propriatry custom scripted website.

In most cases this is a GIANT Mistake.

I simply don’t undersatnd why you wouldn’t build “on top” of an already exisitng open source content management platform. It’s much faster to develope, and more importantly much easier to upgrade and keep up to date. Things change online everyday, if you have a custom solution you’re spending tons of money to have developers keep it updated and add new features. Also, if you want to change developers, you’re screwed – it’s going to be slow and expensive for them to learn your system and then code for it.

Why not harness the power of thousands and in some hase tens and hunreds of thousands of devleopers contstanlty improving and updating possiblities by buildling on an open source content managmenet system and then custmizing it from there. It’s much faster to deploy, is more stables, has more features, and cost 1/10 as much. That’s what we provide. I got a lot of questions about our backend with many of the old school tech people expecting me to say we use properity scripts, – we don’t . We custimize and modify on top of open source scripts and bundle everything with strategy and promotion which results in faster develpment and better sites.

The beta launch of ‘Dynamic URL Rewriting’ in Site Explorer allows webmasters to tell Yahoo Search which dynamic parameters they would like the search engine to ignore.

Priyank Garg of Yahoo Search managed to tear himself away from MuggleNet long enough to give webmasters a heads-up on a new feature at Yahoo Search. Their Site Explorer has been updated with a beta test of Dynamic URL Rewriting. Garg explained more at the Yahoo Search blog:

The new feature provides the ability for site owners to alert Yahoo! of the dynamic parameters in URLs that they’d like Yahoo! to ignore, which we’ll then automatically rewrite accordingly. So you might wonder what the feature really gives you. Utilizing the ‘Dynamic URL Rewriting’ feature enables:

• A more efficient crawl of your site, with fewer duplicate URLs being crawled.

• Better and deeper site coverage, as we’ll be able to use our crawler capacity to find and index more new content on your site.

• More unique content discovered, as we’ll handle more dynamic parameters in your URLs (if you remove the content-neutral dynamic parameters).

• Fewer chances of crawler traps.

• Cleaner and easier-to-read URLs displayed in the search results.

• Better aggregation of link juice to your sites, which can help your pages rank better.

This kind of filtering should be welcomed by site publishers of all kinds who deliver content dynamically. Database driven e-commerce sites in particular should benefit from what should be much better indexing of their products by Yahoo’s crawlers.

Order (or just read more about) Wicked Cool Perl Scripts from Amazon.com

Bah, humbug.

Well, maybe not that bad. Actually, not “bad” at all: I have no real complaints about this book, but I didn’t like it and can’t imagine handing it to anyone with a hearty “Here, read this, you’ll love it”.

As I whined at my review of the similarly named “Wicked Cool Shell Scripts”, the title alone is enough to put me in a bad mood.

But “Wicked Cool Shell Scripts” at least was interesting from the view that the tasks presented are actually hard to do in a shell script, and therefore were at least cool in that sense.

I said at that review “if you need anything complex at all, Perl or something else is probably a much better way to to it”, and here’s the Perl book, so what’s my problem?

It isn’t “wicked cool”. This is a jumbled pile of Perl scripts designed to do the kinds of things Perl is very good at doing, and that’s why there’s nothing cool about it: doing these kinds of things in Perl requires nothing more than a basic understanding of the language and now and then where to look for a useful module.

What’s cool about that?

The “Wicked Cool Shell Scripts” showed you how you could build a house using a jacknife and a rock; you’d have to be an idiot to do it, but it is awe inspiring.

This book shows you how to do it after cleaning out Sears tool department.

Oh, maybe I’m massively unfair. Maybe somone would like this book, but I don’t think anyone reading at this site will.

There are two types of web sites on the Internet. The die hard SEO managers still favor static pages, because they are easier to crawl and more visible to search engines, and it is fairly easy to add a few hundred pages to a website by copying and pasting or creating a template.

The new trend is to use content management systems like Mambo or PHPNuke, but these dynamic systems can cause optimization problems.

Even the simplest CMS, content management system, requires extensive knowledge of programming in PERL or PHP.

A potential solution is the use of CGI and Javascripts that can be copied and pasted into most templates, are hosted on both Unix and Linux, and require no programming knowledge.

They can improve the productivity of a CMS or a static website.

These scripts can link part of a static web page to a SQL database improving the productivity of the site without loosing the benefits of a static page.

This can be as simple as including a password protect section to the website to installing a shopping cart on static web pages.

Security scripts protect personal information keeping it away from the eyes of the competitors. The biggest benefit is found in web analytics.

Web analytics uses scripts on web sites to collect data. Google has an excellent web analytics program for their Google Account subscribers.

This is different from an AdWord or AdSense account. Their system promises to tell you everything except the names of the people who visited the web site. T

his provides invaluable marketing information in a format that anyone can understand.

Googles new AP key is in its infancy, but programmers and developers around the globe are rushing to create methods of using the AP key to provide services and information to web masters.

Most scripts run at the server level and require some programming skill. There are a number of great resources for ready made scripts that will reduce a web sites work load and increase productivity.

Most provide scripts, tutorials, forums, resource guides, and even job banks to find a programmer to offer some assistance. Scripts are made to increase productivity and decrease time load.

The most important thing for a webmaster to remember is that not all scripts are created equal. Avoid free scripts and stick with a script provider that offers customer service.

Look for way that you can automate managing your web site. The more automation with an organic feel the easier it will be for you to optimize your profits.

Anyone who is managing a business would have a wish list similar to this: a demand for a product or service that he or she provides, a streamlined base of operations in making and providing the product or service, besting the competition with a plan of action, having loyal customers, having even loyal employees and getting timely information relevant to the business.

The Herculean undertaking of putting all of these together is another predicament to be sorted out. No matter how you look at it, actually completing and implementing this list is in no way easy. So what does a good entrepreneur do? He delegates the tasks to people so he can deal with the more important portion of running his or her business.

The delegation of work to other people, of course, is only good if you have people to delegate to as in the case of large enterprises. If you don’t have people or enough people to pass the work to, you can always ask for outside help, which in most cases works out better and much more economical.

Websites are essential in today’s businesses. It serves as an inexpensive conduit from the manufacturer to the customers and vice versa. The efficient and cost-effective manner by which customers are able to interact with the company via a website is invaluable. The site already contains all the vital information that a prospective or existing client might need.

From the manufacturers point of view, having a website enables them to manage the information their customers should know about their product or service by putting up tailor made links to exact client needs. Every little detail that they see fit from product specifications to ordering information can be seen in a nice layout and the client can analyze a fully searchable database of appropriate information about the product or service. For the customers, what they get is a 24/7 information reservoir about the product or service that they need. Queries can be answered via a public forum post or a private message and even through email.

Being the busy entrepreneur that you are, I am pretty certain that you don’t have time to learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL etc. to make your website communicate with your customers, receive orders and generally create a homey look and feel for it. That’s where purchasing (this would be the outside help I was referring to earlier) very affordable prepared scripts or short programs come in handy. These ready-made codes will permit your ordinary website to receive orders from your customers. It will even allow you to receive comments, suggestions, and complaints for Customer Service functions. Best of all, you don’t need to know a single programming language to use scripts, that’s because you won’t even be writing a single line of code.

One more thing you don’t need to worry is software incompatibility. Since scripts are interpreted codes, it does not matter if you or your customers are running different versions of OSX, Windows, Linux or any other operating system because scripts are fully portable. Utilizing scripts will smoothen your website operations leaving you with more time for other much more important endeavors, time with your family or friends.

Many webmasters have realized the benefit of using RSS to dynamically update websites. This means that the website content automatically changes when the RSS feed is updated.

This allows for webmasters to serve dynamic content or a mixture of static and dynamic content on their website.

Syndication

Often, publishers, interested in expanding their base, will allow other webmasters to republish the contents of an RSS feed. Content providers that allow for syndication, receive additional exposure, and the webmasters serving the content, will generally see web traffic increase as a result of the new content. RSS feeds can be syndicated or displayed using a variety of different methods. Depending on the web host, server configuration, and the intent of the publishers, a variety of different syndication tools exist.

In most cases, providers convert RSS feeds to HTML in order to display the feeds contents. The following are some of the more popular methods to convert RSS feeds as web based content.

Hosted Services

The easiest of solution is not server dependent, a third party host displays the contents of the feed. The downside to using a hosted service is that you are relying on a third party. If the third party’s website has problems, your content will not be displayed. Additionally, webmasters often cannot customize the way the contents are displayed on hosted servers and there is no real search engine benefit to third party hosting.

examples – FeedBurner.com – http://www.feedburner.com

and RSS2HTML – http://www.rss2html.com

Scripts

Using scripts to display RSS feeds on a website is probably the most effective solution. In addition, the webmaster using ASP or PHP scripts to convert their feeds, maintain the control of the “look and feel” of the content displayed. Webmasters also realize the benefit of hosting the feed on a domain that is within the webmasters control.

Using ASP or PHP will allow search engines to spider the actual contents of the RSS feed as if it is part of the actual HTML. Pay particular attention to solutions that cache the RSS feed. If your RSS feed is popular this will save significant bandwidth.

PHP

PHP is a popular scripting language that is often used to dynamically update web pages. PHP support is available on most web servers that run on a Unix Operating System.

example – rss2html.php –

http://www.feedforall.com/free-php-script.htm

ASP

ASP or active server pages is a scripting language similar to PHP but support is more often found on Windows web servers.

Example – rss2html.asp –

http://www.bytescout.com/how_to_display_rss_using_asp.html

Javascript

Javascript is easy to use, and many sites will produce the code that needs to be inserted into the HTML web page, making implementation very easy for webmasters. The downside to the majority of the javascript solutions is that the webpage calls the script each time, and the actual contents of the feed is not able to be spidered or indexed by search engines. So while javascript is easy to use, there is very little benefit to the webmaster. Search engines will not detect any new content or keywords contained in the contents of the feed, so their is little optimization benefit to displaying RSS feeds using javascript. Additionally, while it is unusual, occasionally website visitors will have the javascript turned off in their browser, if that is the case they will be unable to view the contents of the feed.

Example – FeedRoll Pro – http://www.feedrollpro.com

Advanced Scripts

Merging Scripts

Webmasters will often find value in merging multiple RSS feeds in to a single feed. This is particularly useful when attempting to aggregate news on a specific topic. The script allows you to produce an RSS feed by taking the latest items from multiple feeds.

Example – RSSmesh – http://www.feedforall.com/rssmesh.htm

Filtering

Newsmastering

Due to the enormous and ever-increasing information flow we are all submitted to, the only way to improve our ability to access and use the information that is really important to us, must take place by scaling up one notch our ability to filter, aggregate, and access relevant content.

Example – Newsmaster kit –

http://www.masternewmedia.org/reports/newsmasterstoolkit/

Prepublish Scripts

On occasion, webmasters will choose to build a large amount of content, and gradually release it over time. FutureRSS is a PHP script that when used properly will only display feed items that publish dates have passed.

FutureRSS – http://www.feedforall.com/future-rss.htm

A number of flexible solutions exists for webmasters to create, filter, and display content contained in an RSS feed. Using these simple solutions, webmasters can dynamically maintain webpages with unique content.

When a beginning business entrepreneur first hears the term quality shopping cart scripts he or she might think this means the words that are put on the Web page, the script, that will urge the consumer to respond using tact, salesmanship and testimonials.

While those words are important certainly, and should include a clear and focused call to action, shopping cart scripts are good ways to determine who is looking at and buying what when they come to the merchants site. They are a good way to measure how good and doable the navigation is on the site.

Good shopping cart scripts will not only tell the merchant exactly what the consumer looks at and how long she or he views the page but it also tracks those consumers from the very beginning of their decision to buy or not to buy, right through to the end of the online transaction.

This is an especially important tool by which the merchant can tell if there is any pattern to a consumers dropping out of the transaction before completion of the sale.

If, for example, a high percentage of potential buyers are leaving the transaction at the point when they are asked to register, the merchant might be inclined to think that registration is too early on in the transaction process, or the navigation process to order is not clear.

Worse yet, it might show that the common sales lead on the site cannot figure out how to order on the site.

He or she might do well to take the advice of these good shopping cart scripts and not ask that consumer to identify him or herself until it is time to pay for the product. Maybe use more testimonials, free bonuses or benefits of the product to be sold.

The good shopping cart, rather than a cute little icon is the carrier of these scripts, the method that takes the consumers choices to the transaction page and does so securely. It connects with the gateway that sends the details to the payment process page. The scripts will track their choices all the way through to the checkout.

Next, here is where the good shopping cart scripts connect with the merchant account programming to take the money the consumer is spending on merchant products. At the time of payment, the gateway sends the messages that the payment is good to go or denied to the shopping cart software and its scripts.

Is the navigation to buy drop dead clear?

Shopping carts and their scripts could be free, or could cost a pretty penny, depending on the numerous bells and whistles you choose or not. Be very sure to have enough bells and whistles to let your lead understand how to buy from you.

What are good shopping cart scripts for start up businesses may not be robust enough for larger firms with more ecommerce transactions. There are hundreds of good shopping cart scripts from which to choose. You cannot emphasize enough having good and clear navigation to let your lead buy.

First let me tell you the history of Perl scripts and then I will go into why I think Perl is the best overall programming language that there is.

Perl is a programming language created by Larry Wall in 1987. It is based mainly on the programming language C but also borrows features from many other languages. Many people new to this language think that it is written PERL and is an acronym but that is not the true name and is a way that “insiders” identify “outsiders” in this programming language’s world.

Perl was originally named “Pearl” after the parable of Jesus Christ in the Bible that talks about a man who found a pearl in a field and immediately went and sold all that he had in order to buy the pearl. Otherwise known as the story of “the Pearl of Great Price,” the pearl originally was a symbol for the kingdom of heaven something obviously of great value and it was this idea of great value that Larry named his language. Unfortunately Larry found that there was already a programming language named “pearl” and so he shortened the name to Perl. The original manual had a camel as the cover picture and the symbol of the camel has becomes Perl’s official symbol.

Although it is not an acronym it has become known as Perl – practical extraction and report language.

This is a good description of the tasks that Perl scripts are good for that is data in the form of text that are found in lists, programs, etc. Because it is good at these things it has widely been used like glue in the programming world, that is it can be used as an interfacing language to run programs together that were not originally designed to be compatible.

Its use on the popular LAMP platform for web development is an obvious application for these abilities to interface. This is a main reason why this should be of interest to you, the ultimate internet marketer. Other popular applications or in the informatics world where it can be used to manage large and complex databases.

Perl is either loved or hated. Those who hate on Perl scripts cite their ugly and “write only” format. This references the programming language’s complex use of punctuation and symbols, making its readability not the greatest and often such that you can’t go back and look at the code and easily understand what the programmer was intending. Those who love Perl talk of its ease of use and its wide range of application.

Add to Del.icio.us | DiggThis | Yahoo! My Web | Furl

Trever Dellinious’s idea of a good time is snuggling up with his laptop next to a cozy fire on a cold winter day, and writing elegant programs in perl.
