Student Won’t Be Expelled Over Facebook Study Group

A freshman at Ryerson University in Toronto has been cleared of cheating allegations for setting up a Facebook study group and will not be expelled from school.

A disciplinary panel at Ryerson has ruled that first year engineering student Chris Avenir should not be expelled for being the administrator of a Facebook study group for chemistry started last fall and has restored his passing grade in the course.

An 18 year old freshman at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, could be expelled his first year of college because of a Facebook group he was the administrator of. Facebook started as a way for college students to network online and Chris Avenir used is as a virtual study group for his chemistry class. Now he faces charges of academic misconduct and could be kicked out of the university.

A freshman at Ryerson University in Toronto has been charged with cheating for running a Facebook study group and could be expelled pending a faculty hearing on Tuesday.

Chris Avenir, an 18-year-old computer engineering student denies the cheating allegation and said he joined the online chemistry study group Dungeons/Mastering Chemistry Solutions last fall. He later became administrator of the group.
