Thomson Reuters has introduced a new redesign to Reuters.com in an effort to offer more intelligent content to business professionals.

The redesign has been in the works for the past year according to David Schlesinger, Editor-in-Chief of Reuters.

"This is our redesign, a year in the making. That’s a year of extensive discussions with people like you, our elite audience of business professionals, about what would make the site better and faster and easier to use for you as you drive business activity around the world," said Schlesinger in a welcome post on Reuters.com.

The content on the new site has been organized by topics and themes to create online communities, which "adjust as the world’s news agenda evolves."

"The creation of Thomson Reuters gave us an opportunity to re-evaluate the key areas of focus for Reuters.com," said Alisa Bowen, head of consumer publishing for Thomson Reuters.

"Leveraging professional assets from across the company, the redesign has allowed Reuters.com to evolve into a platform that focuses on building deep business knowledge around key topic areas."

Site features include:

News in Numbers: visually appealing market data based on relevant
    topic-matter
Day in Pictures: the day’s news with the use of Reuters award-winning
    photography
Funds Center: professional Lipper data for an online consumer audience
Commentary: news with analysis and opinion
Personalize, Track and Save: create portfolios, follow topics,
    customize tracking
Unique advertising platforms: introducing contextual targeting and
point-of-entry packages to target visitors from search engines

In 2010, Reuters plans to redesign its websites in the UK, India, Japan and China, as well as 13 additional local language markets.

Update: Google evidently likes the Reuters philosophy on this matter. The company recently tweeted the following message:

Original Article: For those of you interested in the online news industry and the never-ending controversial discussion surrounding the Associated Press, linking, fair use, etc., you should be interested in reading what Chris Ahearn, Media President at Thomson Reuters has to say. He appears to come from the opposite side of the tracks as the AP.

Ahearn wrote a piece on a Reuters blog (Via SIA), calling for publishers, bloggers, aggregators, search engines and ad networks to get together and figure out something that works for everyone. Here’s an excerpt:

I believe in the link economy. Please feel free to link to our stories — it adds value to all producers of content. I believe you should play fair and encourage your readers to read-around to what others are producing if you use it and find it interesting.

I don’t believe you could or should charge others for simply linking to your content. Appropriate excerpting and referencing are not only acceptable, but encouraged. If someone wants to create a business on the back of others’ original content, the parties should have a business relationship that benefits both.

Let’s stop whining and start having real conversations across party lines…

Reuters is clearly happy to take any traffic that the AP doesn’t want, as evidenced by this recent tweet from Ahearn:

Reuters is clearly going to be more popular among bloggers, aggregators, etc. with this kind of attitude. And it’s not like Reuters isn’t known for high quality content itself. With a major publishing force like Reuters publicizing this kind of position, you have to wonder if it will get other major publishers like the AP its like-minded peers to re-evaluate their position.

Either way, Reuters is bound to get a lot of link love after this. That will be great for the news organization’s traffic.

According to Reuters, MySpace saw more advertiser ad views in June than Yahoo! Yahoo may be the second biggest search engine on the planet, but when it comes to advertising it saw 34.7 billion ad views compared to MySpace which saw 51 billion views. (figures are from a press release issued by ComScore last week).

Yahoo does have the power to draw more revenue out of their ads and still leads MySpace in terms of revenue. Typically in the realm of social media, ad impressions do not necessarily equal dollars.

"Social media gets all these ad impressions but not necessarily get the dollars," said Colin Gillis, analyst at Canaccord Adams. "MySpace’s cost per thousand (CPM) page views are significantly lower than that of Yahoo".

Back in June MySpace unveiled a redesign of their home page which has opened to doors to larger sponsors such as Wendy’s and Sprint. While it is too soon to say that MySpace has overtaken Yahoo in the ad wars, this definitely shows that at this rate, they aren’t far from it. Look out Yahoo!

Mobile journalism appeals to Reuters as conventions for the Democratic and Republican political parties prepare to take place in the coming weeks.

Convention-goers have the opportunity to engage in some mobile journalism in St. Paul and Denver while they attend the big political conventions in those cities. The drama of a Presidential election year should lend itself to prompting events that may escape the notice of major networks in all the activity.

Reuters doesn’t want to miss the smaller stories that might happen at either convention, and they hope some attendees will step up and volunteer to do some citizen reporting. The news organization announced its new mobile journalism project to that end.

The agency plans to equip those volunteers with video cameras, teaching them how to shoot decent footage, and encouraging them to go out and get video of of the respective conventions to contribute to websites like Reuters.com.

“Because of new technology and online distribution, entire elections can now hinge on moments captured not by traditional journalists, but by ordinary citizens and those closest to the action,” said Reuters.

Those advances in technology mean one person can tote around the veritable equivalent of a camera crew in a package small enough to fit in a generous-sized pocket. While convention events tend toward the controlled and scripted, plenty of people attend, and a compelling look at them may be of interest to thousands of political junkies following the campaigns.

If Google has a legal achilles heel right now, it’s got to be YouTube. The search engine knew it was buying a can of worms, when it set aside $200 million in anticipation of potential lawsuits. Today, Italian broadcaster Mediaset decides that it likes what it sees in the Viacom copyright case, so it too has filed a $780 million lawsuit against YouTube.

According to Reuters:

Mediaset said a sample analysis of YouTube at June 10 found "at least 4,643 videos and clips owned by us, equivalent to more than 325 hours of transmission without having rights".

Mediaset said this was equal to the loss of 315,672 days of broadcasting by its three TV channels.

I think YouTube’s shrug of the shoulders response is hilarious. Reuters says "a YouTube spokeswoman said it did not see the need for the legal case."

Really, YouTube? Don’t see the need, huh? OK, well I’m sure Mediaset will just scurry off and not worry about the copyrighted content being uploaded every day. Perhaps, Mediaset could apologize for the inconvenience and maybe wax Google’s jumbo jet while it’s at it.

Here’s a headline from a new Reuters article:

"Facebook users willing to let employers see profiles"

Reuters looks at a new report on Canadian Facebook users and pretty much declares that they are now happy to let employers see their profiles.

But look at the data:

Almost half of 1,200 people questioned in an online survey said they would be comfortable sharing their personal profile with their current employer, while two in five would consider letting prospective employers look at their Facebook account in addition to their resume.

Huh? "Almost half" would share with their "current" employer? Only 20% would share their Facebook profile with a "prospective" employer?

How does that match-up with the headline? Maybe Reuters was influenced by the report’s author who says, "The days of getting drunk and getting all your pictures posted online, that’s gone."

Since when? Last time I checked, even responsible school teachers are posting content that could cost them their job.

While I believe social networking users are starting to realize their profiles can have a negative impact on their reputation–and careers–we’re certainly not at the point where everyone has the message.

Reuters is normally such a reliable news source for me, but I just can’t stop shaking my head over this gaff.

Through the use of the Spreadsheets feature in Google Docs, Reuters published poll charts for key states for the Republican and Democratic primary races.

Super Tuesday occupies the candidates in 24 states today. Early primaries have knocked several candidates out of both races, with the remaining ones fighting it out on the biggest primary day in US history.

While we’re tempted to rant about being left out of the primary fun in Kentucky (seriously, Iowa and New Hampshire always get to go first, what nitwit made that decision?), other little areas of interest bear watching.

Like this Google Docs blog post about Reuters and their poll charts. In polling ahead of Super Tuesday, Reuters tapped Google Docs to generate those charts.

“We didn’t do anything special to help Reuters do this, in fact, we came across this by chance just watching the results on their site,” Google’s Jonathan Rochelle said.

The International Herald Tribune agreed to an ad revenue sharing deal with Reuters that will monetize a new business report from the two news organizations.

Editorial content sharing deals like the one noted by Paid Content could be a more widely seen event. Jeff Jarvis called it "a model for other news organizations to take care of commodity news."

Business news forms the commodity in question here. Paid Content noted the IHT’s agreement with Bloomberg for business content expired, giving Reuters the opportunity to slip in and seal the deal.

"This is more than syndication: buying a piece of content. This is a form of outsourcing – you take care of that so I don’t have do (and so I can concentrate on my real value – hint: local)," Jarvis said on his blog.

That’s a truer statement than Jarvis may realize. Reuters has been a presence in outsourcing writing to places like India.

The outsourcing could apply to other areas. Jarvis cited several brands with strength in reporting on niches – ESPN in sports, People in entertainment – that could fill a publications content while reporters focus on local stories.

Reuters’ agreement with IHT may be a stepping stone toward deals with other publications like the New York Times. "Business by Reuters" launches on January 7th online and in print.

MySpace is working on a News Feed feature of its own, reminiscent of Facebook’s own feature, Reuters reports.

And while Fox Interactive Media President Peter Levinsohn told Reuters the time line was 30-45 days, Michael Arrington reports that they’re coming a bit sooner than that. Try Thursday—except in Ireland and New Zealand, where they’ve already been testing it.

Arrington has screenshots (right) of the eerily-familiar-looking mock up of the feed, which will be called Friends Updates. (Cryptic, I know.)

MySpace is prepared to thwart the potential backlash. If you don’t recall, over 100,000 people signed a petition against Facebook’s news feeds (no idea how many have signed the petition against Project Beacon/Social Ads).

However, as TechCrunch reports, MySpace seems to have looked into this. He says that users can opt out of the tracking/reporting altogether as well as control what kinds of messages appear in their feeds (capabilities which Facebook eventually added). You also have choices over which of your MySpace friends you track and to what extent, as well as control over who can watch your Friends Updates.

Levinsohn also told Reuters that MySpace plans to allow users to create different profiles to use with school, work, and family and other friends.

Comments
