Reddit is good for a lot of things, mostly because it’s simply made of up a huge group of people. When a community pulls together it can be capable of some pretty incredible things, and in the reddit age, sometimes that is something that wouldn’t have been possible in years past.

One reddit user wanted to give his grandpa a gift by having an old Navy photo restored for him. He turned to the reddit community, and a bunch of people took a shot at it, with some working off the others’ work. Eventually, the community came up with a great restoration job, and the user recorded video of the moment when he explained the process and showed his grandpa the finished product.

“I didn’t realize I was so good looking…That’s fantastic!” says the grandpa before thanking the reddit community.”

After just a day, the video already has over 70,000 views.

Photobombs are nothing new to the internet, but it’s rare that a celebrity participates in ‘ruining’ a tourist photo.

This week, a woman became internet-famous for a short time after a friend of hers posted a picture of her standing in front of the George Washington statue in Boston Public Garden to Reddit. The catch is that acting legend Kevin Spacey had randomly joined the photo moments before it was taken.

The purported friend, who has since deleted his or her Reddit account, stated that Spacey simply jogged up to the woman, shouted “Photobomb!” and continued jogging.

The Reddit comments for the picture were soon filled with jokes based on Spacey’s movie and TV characters. One of the best (by Reddit user mister_durden) referenced Spacey’s character in American Beauty who asks for workout advice by saying, “I just want to look good naked.” Another referenced Spacey’s most recent character in the Netflix series House of Cards, who works out using a rowing machine.

Jeffrey Tambor, who plays twin brothers George and Oscar Bluth on Arrested Development participated in a reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) today, discussing the show, among other things.

Arrested Development, of course, is due to return as a Netflix-exclusive series later this month, and fans are champing at the bit to see what the long-anticipated fourth season has in store.

Tambor, of course, fielded many questions about the show. Following are some highlights. If you’re not familiar with the show, you might as well stop reading now, because much of the discussion requires you to be.

When asked about his favorite running theme/joke from the show, he responded, “There’s always money in the banana stand.”

One user asked how the famous chicken dance performed by numerous cast members on the show came about, to which he responded, “I never knew about it until I was asked to do it. And when I’m asked to do it, I do it very badly. I’m the worst chicken dancer of the cast.”

When asked whether he likes playing George or Oscar more, he said, “One side of my brain likes Oscar. One side of my brain likes George.”

When asked if Judy Greer (Kitty) ever flashed him in real life, he responded, “No. And that’s a problem.”

Tambor said it only took about five minutes for the cast to slip back into the AD roles once they started shooting again. “We’re all so used to each other. Our first scenes, we just slipped into it naturally,” he said. “They’re all very fine actors.”

In response to another question, he noted that very little of the dialogue on the show is ad-libbed, and that the writing is just that good.

Of course, he was asked about the long-rumored Arrested Development movie, to which he responded, “I think the new season will promote a great amount of popularity, which will help a movie come into existence.”

On his favorite AD guest star, Tambor said, “They were all great, but Henry Winkler is a close friend of mine, and I was so glad to have him aboard.”

On getting the news that the show would be canceled: “I was sad. I wasn’t surprised, I think we all saw it coming.”

On the most exciting thing about the upcoming season: “It’s new format. The fact that we’re doing 15 all at once, and each character gets to tell his story. We’re the little engine that could, and we came back.”

On his favorite episode: “Gosh, I would have to say that the entire fourth season. I’m just so happy to be back.”

Hopefully us fans will agree.

Tambor was joined by the co-creators of Onion News Empire, so if you’re interested in that too, check out the thread.

Now watch this recent interview with Lucille Bluth.

It seems to be inspiring the community. The top comment from user euphwes says, “This is actually pretty clever. My daughter is on the bottle now, I’ll arrange another ‘on the bottle’ picture to happen 20 years from now too.”

At least the plan involves letting the kid grow up first.

Google Glass seems like it was built for Reddit. Google’s wearable computers are perfect for capturing the spontaneous moments in life, and then sharing those moments with the fine folks of Reddit.

Members of the Google Glass Explorers program can now start bragging about having glass on Reddit thanks to the tireless work of Malcolm Nguyen. His app, Reddit Timeline, brings pretty much all the capabilities of Reddit to Google Glass. Here’s what Glass users can expect from the app:

Top 25 post from your FrontPage within a bundle updated every hour.

Upvote/Downvote

Comment Threading

Read aloud comments

Reply to comment

By using the touchpad on Glass, users will be able to swipe through the top posts. From there, they can upvote and downvote content. Accompanying text is overlaid on images in an easily readable font.

Consumers aren’t going to get Google Glass for a while still, but it’s pretty much a given that a Reddit app will be incredibly popular once it does launch to the public. Nguyen is just getting a headstart on the competition.

Reddit has just announced that they have completely rewritten their privacy policy “from the ground up,” to be clearer and more accessible to the average user.

“For some time now, the reddit privacy policy has been a bit of legal boilerplate. While it did its job, it does not give a clear picture on how we actually approach user privacy. I’m happy to announce that this is changing. The reddit privacy policy has been rewritten from the ground-up. This new policy is a clear and direct description of how we handle your data on reddit, and the steps we take to ensure your privacy.”

The new policy will go into effect on May 15th.

The main difference (other the clarity) in reddit’s new privacy policy, as opposed to the older policy, is that this one is more specific to reddit. The previous privacy policy was overbroad, having been written by Conde Nast (who owns reddit).

“The old policy was written very broad. It was a generic one written by Conde Nast. This was written specifically to apply to reddit. The goal was to be clear and specific. Especially about data retention. Some things were added like reddit Gold and specific information about the new advertising providers,” says legal strategist Lauren Gelman, who helped write the new policy.

For one, the new policy expresses exactly what information reddit collects from its users. One new additon involves posts and comments, and how long they stay accessible (hint: forever):

The posts and comments you make on reddit are not private, even if made to a subreddit not readily accessible to the public. This means that, by default, they are not deleted from our servers– ever– and will still be accessible after your account is deleted. However, we only save the most recent version of comments and posts, so your previous edits, once overwritten, are no longer available.

Reddit clarifies that if you truly want a comment gone for good, it’s best to simply edit it.

Another involves IP addresses:

reddit stores the IP addresses associated with specific posts, comments, and private messages for 90 days after they are made or sent.

On a site like reddit, privacy is paramount. Just spend any time on there, and you’ll see what I mean. If you want to read the (incredibly readable) new privacy policy, check here.

Reddit’s General Manager Erik Martin has posted a formal and heartfelt apology on behalf of the site and its many users for the part they played in the spreading of false information in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Of course, the most public consequence of the misinformation and false accusation swirling around on reddit in the Boston bombings’ aftermath involved a Brown University student named Sunil Triphathi. Reddit helped fuel speculation that he was identified as suspect #2 in the bombings, allegations that were quickly proven to be false. Of course, by that point much damage had already been done.

Reddit eventually shut down the r/findbostonbombers subreddit, where much of the misinformation and evidence-less speculation was occurring. They also blocked comment threads in other subreddits, like r/news, that made unfounded speculations about the bombers’ identities.

“However, though started with noble intentions, some of the activity on reddit fueled online witch hunts and dangerous speculation which spiraled into very negative consequences for innocent parties. The reddit staff and the millions of people on reddit around the world deeply regret that this happened. We have apologized privately to the family of missing college student Sunil Triphathi, as have various users and moderators. We want to take this opportunity to apologize publicly for the pain they have had to endure. We hope that this painful event will be channeled into something positive and the increased awareness will lead to Sunil’s quick and safe return home,” says Martin.

In reality, reddit’s actions didn’t really become a problem until things started to get personal, and the posting of personal info prompted an online witch hunt.

“A few years ago, reddit enacted a policy to not allow personal information on the site. This was because “let’s find out who this is” events frequently result in witch hunts, often incorrectly identifying innocent suspects and disrupting or ruining their lives. We hoped that the crowdsourced search for new information would not spark exactly this type of witch hunt. We were wrong. The search for the bombers bore less resemblance to the types of vindictive internet witch hunts our no-personal-information rule was originally written for, but the outcome was no different,” says Martin.

Still, reddit was a source of information during the attacks and its aftermath. An incredibly useful source at that. During many of the events that unfolded over the course of last week, redditors posting live police radio updates were more accurate and much faster than traditional news outlets.

But the witch hunts did occur, with scary consequences. And that cannot be denied or overlooked.

Martin closes with this sentiment, in which he hopes the reddit community can learn from this misstep:

“After this week, which showed the best and worst of reddit’s potential, we hope that Boston will also be where reddit learns to be sensitive of its own power.”

And that power will only continue to grow. Martin reports that at the time of suspect #2 Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s capture, reddit had 272,000 active visitors, nearly a third of which were glued to the main r/news thread of the capture. That’s a lot of eyes.

Last year, all of Reddit went dark in protest of SOPA. It doesn’t look like the site will be doing it again for CISPA, but one of its more popular subreddits will.

The popular technology subreddit, which has almost 3 million readers, has gone dark today in protest of CISPA. It’s not like the subreddit has become unavailable, but rather the entire page, except for the ad, is now encased in a darkness that makes reading the links rather uncomfortable on the eyes.

The link at the top of the subreddit redirects users to a post on the Stand subreddit with information on what CISPA means for everyday Internet users. It also contains links to helpful tools that allow users to encrypt not just their Internet connections, but everything on their computer.

Out of all the other tech-related subreddits, it seems that /r/technology is the only one to have gone dark today. There are probably some other smaller subreddits that have also gone dark, but few have the amount of subscribers that /r/technology enjoys. Unfortunately, those who frequent /r/technology are probably already well aware of CISPA. It would have been far more effective for Reddit’s front page to go dark while providing a link to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian’s video calling for action against CISPA.

Still, it’s nice to see at least one mainstream site go dark today in protest of CISPA. Anonymous called for an Internet blackout, but only managed to sign up a little over 400 Web sites. The Web sites that had signed up were not very well known either thus limiting the spread of the message.

UPDATE: Since publishing this story, a number of other popular subreddits have also gone dark in protest of CISPA. Most of the subreddits, including /r/pics, /r/funny, /r/politics, and /r/askreddit include the same link to the post on /r/stand at the top.

One popular subreddit has done something different though. The much loved (or much hated) /r/atheism has a banner protesting CISPA (click to enlarge):
