Back on March 28, Rich Products Corporation issued a recall for Farm Rich-branded products such as Mini Quesadillas, Mini Pizza Slices, Philly Cheese Steaks, and Mozzarella Bites. The recall was issued over concerns that the food could be contaminated with E. Coli, and included nearly 200,000 pounds of frozen food made between November 12, 2012 and November 19, 2012. Rich Products stated that it would continue to work with the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

This week, the recall has been expanded to include over 10.5 million pounds of frozen snacks.

Rich Products has voluntarily recalled all products produced at its Waycross, Georgia plant with “Best by” dates from january 1, 2013 to September 29, 2014. The recall includes all sizes of Farm Rich-branded Mini Quesadillas, Mini Pizza Slices, Mozzarella Bites, Mini Bacon Cheeseburgers, and Philly Cheese Steaks. Other products from Farm Rich, such as Mozzarella Sticks and Stuffed Pretzel Bites, are made in separate plants and are not part of the recall.

The recall was expanded when the source of the contamination could not be determined. Farm Rich called this “unacceptable” and voluntarily recalled everything made in the Georgia plant.

“It saddens us deeply that anyone has become ill after consuming Farm Rich products,” said Bill Gisel, CEO of Farm Rich. “When it became apparent to us that despite the expertise of the USDA, FDA, the scientific community and our own experts, that identification of a specific cause was not going to be a simple or short process, we decided to act proactively to expand the recall.”

No reports of sickness due to the products have been reported. Farm Rich has stated that customers can call the company’s customer relations helpline to receive a refund or replacement of the potentially-contaminated products they have had to throw out.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that the Smithfield Packing Company is recalling around 38,000 pounds of pork sausage. In a statement, the FSIS said that the meat could contain “small pieces of plastic,” which “likely” come from gloves.

The recalled products are one-pound “chubs” of Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll that have a use-by date of March 12, 2013 and cases of the same type of sausage roll that have a case code of 78533109741.

The meat was packaged on January 11 of this year and have been shipped to 11 states and the District of Columbia. The states are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Smithfield discovered the contamination after it received two separate complaints from customers. So far, there have been no reported injuries due to the plastic pieces.

Located in Smithfield, Virginia, the Smithfield Packing Company was founded in 1936. It has been shipping pork products since that time and is one of the largest meat companies in the U.S.

Four major retailers have agreed to a voluntary recall of the “Nap Nanny” product made by the company Baby Matters. Amazon, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com, and Toys R Us/Babies R Us are all participating in the recall.

The CPSC is warning consumers that the Nap Nanny baby recliners “contain defects in the design, warnings, and instructions,” that could lead to the injury or death of babies. The agency states that it knows of five infants who have died in newer Nap Nanny devices, and 70 more cases of babies nearly falling out of the device.

The recall is being undertaken by retailers because, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Baby Matters is either “unable or unwilling to participate in the recall.” Baby Matters and the CPSC have been unable to agree on a recall plan, and the CPSC has filed an administrative complaint against the company.

Leslie Gudel, the owner and founder of Nap Nanny has responded to the CPSC’s complaint on the product’s website:

The CPSC’s complaint notes that five infants have died “while using” the Nap Nanny. The loss of an infant is an unthinkable tragedy, and I am truly heartbroken for the families who have lost a child. But the fact that infants have died “while using” the Nap Nanny improperly, such as when used in a crib where the child could suffocate on a crib bumper or a blanket, does not mean our product caused the child’s death or is hazardous.

The first generation of Nap Nanny devices was recalled back in 2010, in exchange for $80 coupons toward the purchase of newer models of the Nap Nanny. The generation two Nap Nanny and the “Chill” model both contain more explicit warnings and instructions for parents.

Sony has been pushing for a slice of the tablet market since the launch of its first tablets earlier this year. The company’s latest tablet, the Xperia Tablet S, launched in September to minimal fanfare. The tablet did manage to garner some sales, but a defect is forcing Sony to recall the month-old tablet.

Reuters is reporting that the new Xperia tablet S isn’t as waterproof as Sony claims it is. The tablet, according to Sony’s own Web site, says that users can actually use the device even when their hands are wet thanks to a “splash proof enclosure.” It’s an obvious attempt to get the tablet into kitchens, but it hasn’t worked out exactly as they planned.

The tablet currently suffers from a manufacturing defect that allows gaps to appear between the screen and the case. The waterproof claim falls flat as water can get in through these gaps and cause irreparable harm to the device. Thankfully, Sony has only shipped about 100,000 of the devices so the recall should not affect their already low bottom line.

Sony has also offered to fix any tablets that have already been purchased. Interested consumers should contact Sony’s customer service to arrange the repair. A free repair is always nice, but you might not want to bother if your Xperia S isn’t going to be used anywhere near water.

It’s unknown when Sony will start to sell the Xperia S again. Sony’s interesting dual screen tablet is still available, and recently got a price markdown to a more affordable $350. Sony’s devices may not be a market leader, but at least they’re doing some pretty cool stuff.

BP this week issued a recall on a 50,000 barrel batch of gasoline shipped to Northwestern Indiana fuel distributors. The recall covers all unleaded regular gas shipped from the Whiting, Indiana fuel storage terminal between August 13 – 17.

In an official statement, BP said it believes the gas contained a higher than normal amount of polymeric residue. The company admitted that the fuel in question could cause hard starting, salling, and “other drivability issues.” BP stated that it guarantees every gallon of gas it sells, and urges customers who believe they received some of the bad batch to call BP’s customer hotline. Anyone buying gas from Northwest Indiana BP stations or other gas stations during the past week may have been affected.

Presumably, motorists will have their vehicle repair costs covered by BP. This is assuming, of course, that customers can get ahold of someone at BP. The Consumerist is reporting that BP’s customer hotline is being flooded at the moment, causing long hold times. According to a local news report, the estimated cost for repairing one of the affected vehicles is around $1,200.

BP is now reviewing shipping records and contacting Northwest Indiana distributors who have loaded the bad product onto tanker trucks and replacing the bad gas. The company issued an apology, stating, “We would like to apologize for the inconvenience this has caused some of our customers.”

Ford recall: Nearly 485,000 Escapes (2001-2004), which are referred to as Mavericks overseas, are being recalled by the car manufacturer over sticking gas pedals that could, in theory, lead to deadly crashes. The Associated Press reports that the recall is being issue just a week after investigators began looking into the issue. This comes hot on the heels of the recall issued just a few weeks ago to address some carpeting alignment issues in the same model.

Here’s what’s wrong: When you depress the gas pedal all the way down, there’s a possibility that control cables can stick to the engine cover. If this happens, the throttle is essentially left wide open, which can ultimately cause the vehicle to speed out of control. According to the AP, Ford has received 68 complaints, including 13 crashes, nine injuries, and, sadly, one death. In other words, this could be a potentially serious problem.

“This is not a situation where the engine would accelerate or go into a wide-open state on its own,” Ford spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel explained. That’s good to know. Apparently this issue can be resolved by repositioning and refastening the cables in question. However, dealers may not receive the proper equipment for several weeks.

Unfortunately, this is the third recall involving Ford’s Escape SUVs. In addition to the aforementioned carpeting problem, the company was forced to call 11,500 Escapes in order to repair some dodgy fuel lines, which could crack open and leak gasoline. Until these problems are hammered out, I’d say it’s a safe bet to stay away from these vehicles until all of the potentially dangerous kicks have been resolved.

Honda recall: 2012 CR-Vs and 2013 Acura ILXs are the latest batch of automobiles affected by potentially serious problems. In this particular case, car doors are having a very hard time staying closed, forcing the manufacturer to issue a worldwide recall on the vehicles in-question. The US alone is expected to recall 166,600 CR-Vs and 6,200 ILXs. Owners should start receiving letters in the mail detailing these issues sometime this August.

According to the company, the doors may not shut properly if the inside driver or passenger door handles are engaged at the same time as the power or manual door locks. Furthermore, since the doors are not properly latched, they may pop open when someone uses the locks. The mechanism will be given a once-over by mechanics when the vehicle is brought in for inspection. Should your automobile have any problems, it will be repaired at no cost to you.

The Honda recall follows close behind those made by Ford and Chevy, both of which have experienced some manufacturing issues over the past few months. This, of course, isn’t the sort of thing potential buyers want to hear when they’re on the prowl for a new ride. Whether it’s misaligned carpeting or the potential for sudden engine fires, consumers want don’t want to have to worry about the faultiness of their vehicle after signing all of that paperwork.

Thankfully, Honda says that no crashes, injuries, or deaths have been attributed to the malfunction. Hopefully this won’t change before the problems are addressed.

The Ford Escape recall scheduled begin on July 23rd will address some serious issues with the vehicle’s carpeting, according to Orlando Sentinel. Nearly 10,000 2013 Ford Escapes manufactured at the company’s Louisville, Kentucky plant between March 8th and June 7th are thought to be affected by this recall.

According to reports, carpet padding located near the center console trim panel has been mispositioned, which means that drivers could, in theory, hit the brake pedal when they’re attempting to remove their foot from the accelerator. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes the carpeting may result in increased stopping distances and potentially up the risk for crashes. That’s never a good thing.

8,226 vehicles will be recalled in the United States alone. The Associated Press received word from a Ford spokeswoman that approximately 2,000 vehicles will be recalled in Canada, as well as a few hundred in Mexico.

Volvo recall: Although the car manufacturer is thought to produce some of the safest automobiles money can buy, apparently even they are prone to making mistakes. Between 2010 and 2012, the company recalled roughly 32,000 vehicles for a variety of issues, including incorrect tire-pressure labeling, defective airbag deployments, and stalling engines. Although the company eventually alerted consumers about the recalls, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration thought Volvo’s handling of the situation was a little on the slow side. At the end of the day, the company will have to fork over $1.5 million in fines.

Of course, Volvo isn’t admitting that it did anything wrong. In fact, the reason they decided to pay the fine was to “avoid a protracted dispute and possible litigation”. In other words, spending $1.5 million is quite a bit cheaper than fighting the allegations in court. Lawyers are, after all, a tad expensive, especially when you can just pay a small amount of money to make the problem go away. When you make as much money as Volvo does on a yearly basis, $1.5 million is practically chump change. They’ll make that much back in a heartbeat.

According to federal law, car manufacturers have five business days to inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about an impending recall. If they fail to do so, fines will be issued. This, of course, is why Volvo was staring down a multi-million dollar penalty in the first place. They failed to take the proper steps when the threat of a recall was looming on the horizon, and they ultimately paid the price for their actions.

So did the company walk away with a head full of lessons learned? According to a statement, Volvo said that “dedication to quality and consumer safety is paramount. After several conversations with NHTSA about its reporting rules, Volvo Car Corp. has taken steps to improve the review process and analysis of potential quality and safety issues with our vehicles. We are in agreement with NHTSA’s objective to communicate with the agency and consumers in a timely manner. It’s important to note that, in each of the subject cases, a voluntary recall had been conducted and no injuries, fatalities or property damage claims were reported.”

In short, probably not. Unless, of course, the lesson was to not get caught doing anything wrong. However, the settlement did say that Volvo has “streamlined the internal investigation and recall decision-making process to improve the timeliness of necessary notifications to NHTSA.”

Honda recall will only affect owners who have purchased the company’s luxury sedan, the Acura TL. According to Reuters, Honda will recall nearly 53,000 cars due to problems with the vehicle’s power steering system.

“Over time, the power steering hose may deteriorate and develop a fluid leak,” the company explained in a statement. “Leaking power steering fluid could lead to loss of power steering assistance or, if it leaks onto a catalytic converter it may result in smoke, or in the worst case, fire.”

According to the carmaker, the recall effects 52,615 automobiles in the U.S. and 4,266 in Canada. Presently, no crashes or injuries have been associated with the defect. Customers who purchased either a 2007 or 2008 model will be notified of the situation via mail around mid-June.
