Google Buying NY Office Building For $1.9 Billion

An odd rumor that circulated in late October has now been confirmed.  Search and advertising giant Google is getting into real estate, signing a contract to buy an extremely large office building in New York City for about $1.9 billion.

Google Opens New Pittsburgh Office

People who enjoy gawking at Google’s "creative" workspaces now have on more area to look over.  This morning, Google officially opened an office in Pittsburgh, and the 40,000-square-foot environment is hard to mistake for any other company’s property.

Facebook Said To Rent Space On Madison Avenue

Google and Facebook are often mentioned in the same breath these days, and now it seems that Facebook, like Google, may be interested in the New York real estate market.  Rumor has it Facebook’s leased some space at 335 Madison Avenue.

AOL Sells Office Buildings And Land For $144.5 Million

AOL said today it is selling  four of its office buildings it no longer uses and two undeveloped pieces of land on its Dulles, Virginia campus to CB Richard Ellis Realty Trust for $144.5 million.

Artie-Minson AOL said as of today it has approximately $750 million of cash on hand.

Hulu To Open Development Center In Seattle

Amazon, Expedia, Redfin, and Zillow may want to hold an employee appreciation day in the near future.  Hulu announced today that it will open a development center in Seattle – which is where those organizations are headquartered – and the company is also looking to increase its headcount.

Zillow Partners With Aparments.com On Rental Listings

Real estate website Zillow.com said today it has partnered with Apartments.com to bring the rental website’s database of 90,000 apartment listings to Zillow.

Apartments.com rental listings include home details, photos, floor plans, and property manager contact information.

Yahoo Canada Partners With Zoocasa

Canadians with an interest in real estate should now get more use out of the Yahoo homepage.  Yahoo Canada has partnered with a company called Zoocasa to launch a new application that’s located right by eBay- and Facebook-related apps.

Zoocasa is supposed to be Canada’s fastest-growing real estate site, and a statement issued by Yahoo explained, "Now the more than 17 million Canadians who visit Yahoo! every month will be able to search for a new home, research local neighbourhoods and receive updates about properties that fit their personal profile . . ."

Google To Establish New Ops Center In Ireland

The number of people Google employs in Ireland should soon grow by 200.  Google’s announced that it intends to establish a new operations center in the country, and the company’s wasting no time in getting it up and running.

AOL Offers Former Google Offices To Startups

AOL’s managed to tempt a number of employees away from Google over the past couple of years, with the list including names like Tim Armstrong, Caroline Campbell, Tim Castelli, Erin Clift, David Eun, Kristin Kovner, Jeff Levick, Jeff Reynar, and Maureen Sullivan.  Now, it looks like AOL will – with Google’s approval – take some office space, too.

Yahoo And Zillow Partner On Real Estate Ad Deal

Yahoo and Zillow.com have partnered to create a real estate advertising network, bringing together the second and third most trafficked property websites.

The move expands on existing partnership between Yahoo and Zillow that began in 2006, when Yahoo integrated Zillow’s home valuations on its own real estate site. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Facebook Gears Up For Big Expansion In India

It’s full speed ahead for Facebook in India.  The company’s new office in the country is supposed to open within two months, and when it is running at full capacity, reports indicate that the office is supposed to accommodate a whopping 500 or so employees.

Google Maps UK Gets Property Search

People who are in search of a place to live in the UK have a new ally in Google.  This morning, the search giant introduced a "Properties" option on Google Maps UK, allowing users to see and sort through many of the houses and apartments/flats that are available for sale or rent.

As you might gather from the screenshot below, the "Properties" feature isn’t omniscient; some largish empty spaces exist on the map where it’s hard to imagine at least one residence isn’t unoccupied.

Yahooplex Plans Greenlit

Yahoo’s cleared a significant hurdle on the path to building a new headquarters.  The Santa Clara City Council has approved its proposal to construct a 3-million-square-foot campus, although whether Yahoo intends to move forward with the idea is now very much unknown.

Facebook Announces Seattle Expansion

Less than two months after Facebook made its decision to open a sales and operations office in Austin, Texas official, the company is on the move again.  Facebook’s announced that it next intends to open a small engineering office in Seattle, Washington.

This will perhaps not be a huge deal; Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn said in a statement that Facebook’s only looking for an office that will accommodate 30 or so employees.  On the other hand, any expansion out of Palo Alto is a sort of new and exciting thing at this point in the company’s history.

Google Plans Office Tower Move In Japan

Google’s poised for another quantifiable growth spurt, this time in Japan.  Officials have confirmed that the search giant will be moving into a larger office space this year, joining Yahoo Japan, Ferrari Japan, and a number of other interesting companies in Mori Tower.

Zillow Brings Mobile App To Android

Real estate website Zillow.com told WebProNews today it has launched a free Zillow Android application.

The Zillow Android app uses GPS technology to find and follow users on an aerial map, and displays "Zestimate" values, homes for sale, homes for rent and recently-sold data on the homes around them.

Facebook Makes Austin Expansion Official

Austin, Texas – which already plays home to tech companies Freescale Semiconductor and Dell – will soon boast a Facebook office, too.  A $1.4 million incentive package we reported on in late February has been approved, and Facebook’s decided to establish a team in Austin as a result.

Texas Governor Coaxes Facebook To Open New Office

Although it isn’t quite a done deal, Texas Governor Rick Perry seems to have more or less ensured that Facebook will open a sales and operations office in Austin.  Perry’s offered the company $1.4 million as an incentive to establish the branch and create some jobs.

Realtor.com Launches iPhone App

Realtor.com, the website for the National Association of Realtors, has launched a Real Estate Search iPhone app.

Users can search for every property listed on Realtor.com by price, location, property type, MLS ID number, square foot, lot size, open house events, distance from a user’s current location and age.

The real estate iPhone app allows users to send a link of a specific property via email, Twitter or Facebook to family, friends or a realtor.

Zillow Grows More Than 50% In 2009

Real estate website Zillow.com said today it broke multiple records for site traffic and user activity in 2009.

An average of 8.2 million unique users visited Zillow each month during 2009, which is an increase of 57 percent year-over-year.

"2009 was a wild year for real estate, with continued home value declines, government intervention, record low mortgage rates, and an enormous amount of consumer uncertainty about what the future holds," said Spencer Rascoff, Zillow’s chief operating officer.

Google Arranges To Expand In Pittsburgh

Over the years, more than a few people have compared the Googleplex to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.  Now, fact and fantasy will come even closer to merging in Pittsburgh, as Google’s decided to lease 40,000 square feet at the former site of a Nabisco plant.
