If you are feeling fatigued by all the Hurricane media coverage, this might be the antidote.

Prankster and self described “phony phone call artist” Captain Janks, best known for his appearances on The Howard Stern Show, has been making the rounds, calling in to local news affiliates to report on Hurricane Irene.

Janks, real name Tom Cipriano, has been getting on air by pretending to be authority figures involved with hurricane management. Once he gets on the air, he proceeds to divert slightly from the topic at hand.

On Saturday, Janks targeted WRAL, posing at North Carolina Emergency Management spokesman Ernie Seneca. After suggesting that residents get the the highest points in their houses to avoid the flooding, Janks describes the suspected cause of the hurricane: A draft of wind from Howard Stern’s a**hole. Check out the YouTube vid below, which shows the lead-up to the on air segment as well –

Funnily enough, Ernie Seneca really exists. Here’s what he had to say about the incident, according to the Miami Herald –

The real Ernie Seneca said he began getting calls shortly after the interview, including from a co-worker who said the caller did not sound like him. Seneca said he has a good sense of humor and took it it stride. “There are a lot more important things in life than some jokester,” he said.

Janks tweeted (@Captainjanks) the other videos had hit YouTube that show additional Irene-themed prank calls to local news stations. These two prank calls were made to Channel 2 in NYC and Channel 3 in Philadelphia, respectively. Each time, Janks poses as an emergency management director.

Natural disasters, as serious as they can be, are fertile ground for comedy. I’m sure that we will see more attempts to disrupt the media coverage of the storms during Hurricane season, especially if Tropical Storm Katia threatens the east coast later this week.

Three cheers for the male penis. It’s undeniable appearance is always good for a laugh — Just ask Anthony Weiner — especially when it shows up in unexpected areas, like, say, Google Maps, or your Twitter DM inbox. It’s quite true that gaming Google Maps has been popular since the service was launched, but recent prank, courtesy of Fairfield College in New Zealand, has brought the phenomenon back to popularity. Thank, in large part (pun intended), to the human penis.

The most recent find, two actually, comes courtesy of the aforementioned Fairfield College and the prank, as you might’ve guessed, comes in the form of two penii that are large enough to make Ron Jeremy proud. The Google Maps satellite scan of the school, which was taken in 2009, shows at least two male members, and there are reports of up to six being included in the scan. I guess you could play a game of “Where’s Waldo” if you so choose. For me, seeing the two prominent etchings is enough to convince me the prank is authentic.

Be warned, the upcoming embed is not safe for those who may not like seeing penis representations in everyday life:

As indicated, this is far from the first time Google Maps has caught such entertainment. Back in 2007, members of a high school in Pennsylvania placed a similar looking object on their football field, and it too made the social media rounds. In fact, the image is still visible on Google Maps, over four years later:

Oddly enough, the football field in question is located at the corner of North Cedar Street and Shaft Road. Sometimes, these jokes just write themselves.

In light of the Fairfield College penis etchings, Stuff.co.nz collected stories about additional pranks from the New Zealand area, and not surprisingly, Fairfield College’s prank is not the first of its kind for the land of the Kiwi. The article’s image is pretty great, too, and it also shows the clarity with which Google Maps performs its duties:

According to the article, a Google spokesperson said they weren’t sure when the 2009 satellite images would be replaced by newer scans, but if the football field in Pennsylvania is any indication, the Fairfield College penii may very well be visible on Google Maps for the foreseeable future.

New Zealand, come to see where Peter Jackson filmed the LoTR trilogy, stay for the giant penis etchings.

So we’ve all heard the news that the rapture may, in fact, happen tomorrow at 6pm. Biblical numerologist Harold Camping sez that a sweeping rapture will take around 200 million souls to heaven, leaving the rest of us here to, I’m assuming, ride roller-coasters and eat at Bob Evans until October 21st, the day when he says the world will actually end as we know it.

Fun.

Here are some things you can do, whether you believe that the end times are upon us or not – and whether it actually happens or not.

Let’s say you don’t fear the the apocalypse is coming, but you know people who do. Well, here’s what you should do: Rapture Prank.

The idea is swirling around the interwebs that the best thing to do tonight and early tomorrow morning is to discard you clothing, shoes and other personal effects around the streets of your town. Hopefully, it will look like you have been raptured. The people who believe in the rapture will think they have been passed up, and hilarity will ensue. Twitter is seeing two hashtags emerge, #RapturePrank and #RaptureBomb, the latter seems to be promoted by Gizmodo.

So what if the Rapture actually does take place as predicted. Well, damn. You’re left behind. Kinda sucks, but what to do now?

Well, the first thing you’re going to want to do is start looting. Yes, it might seem odd to begin to erode the fabric of humanity and decency so soon – but if you don’t then somebody will. And you don’t want to be left with all the crap guns and Kroger-brand chili. You want the good stuff.

Right now, an event is popular on Facebook entitled “Post rapture looting.” It’s info says “when everyone is gone and god’s not looking, we need to pick up some sweet stereo equipment and maybe some new furniture for the mansion we’re going to squat in.”

True. But almost 600,000 are RSVP’ed as attending. So there is going to be stiff competition for the quality loot. 46,000 are listed as “maybe attending.” They will not act fast enough and miss out on the good stuff. 90,000 are not attending, meaning that they are either choosing to abide by some sort of law and order that won’t exist, or they feel like they will be gone and won’t have the need to loot anything.

Okay, now for the rapture believers. If you believe that you will indeed be leaving this world tomorrow, you must worry about your pets. Eternal Earth-Bound Pets USA can help.

The service has been around for some time, but they are obviously booming as of late. Eternal Earth-Bound Pets USA labels itself as “the next best thing to pet salvation in a post rapture world.” They are a group of animal loving atheists that for $135, will care for your pet if you are taken in the rapture. Contracts last 10 years, and you can add additional pets for $20 each.

Don’t leave your beloved puppy to be eaten by hungry post-apocalyptic travelers.

Note: There has been excessive traffic to their inbox. Here’s what they say:

IMPORTANT NOTICE 5/20/11: DUE TO UNPRECEDENTED EMAIL VOLUME OUR EMAIL REPLY ABILITY HAS BEEN MAXED OUT. ONLY CONTRACT SUBMISSIONS WITH PAYPAL SUBMISSIONS WILL BE REPLIED TO IMMEDIATELY. ALL OTHER INQUIRES AND EMAILS WILL BE REPLIED TO BUT WITHIN THE NEXT 24 TO 48 HOURS. OUR APOLOGIES.

What if you have a child in the post rapture world? A question on Quora asks “What are some good post-Rapture activities to do with a 3-year-old?”

I would suggest fairs, carnivals and amusement parks. Maybe a trip to post-apocalyptic Disney World. But the top response on Quora suggests activities based on the book of Revalation:

If you’d prefer a more action-packed role, you could take up polo, since horsemen will be some of the most prominent of the supernatural administrators of Hell on Earth (Revelation 6:1-8).

You could also learn the trumpet, to hang with the six angels of the seventh seal who call forth many of the calamities against the heathen swarms.

The post-Rapture does offer one extreme sport. Using an adapted maker hook, you try to ride the monsters – the dragon (Revelation 12:13-17), the beast from the sea (Revelation 13:1-10), and the beast from the land (Revelation 13:11-18).

I hope this will help all of you. Let’s just hope that if the rapture comes, it takes the form of a zombie apocalypse. I’ve been waiting my whole life for that.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard that Google announced that it would be releasing a new operating system called Google Chrome OS this week. One mysterious blog entry popped up soon after, claiming to have snagged some screenshots of the OS as Google demoed the product to Acer.

Here’s an excerpt from that post:

Hi there. I work for a company (Sorry to be secretive, but what I am about to post could get me in big trouble) that supplies parts for Acer laptops. Today, a Google Rep visited the Acer team to install and quickly show off some of the features of the Google OS in development.

I was invited by Acer to come and view the demo.

I can say and give only what I know and have.

…

After roughly 12 hours, the person who posted this posted the following video, pretty much laughing at the tech media industry for jumping on board and linking to the screenshots.

The video lists all of the sites that linked to it, and shows all of the diggs and tweets that got these fake screenshots a nice bit of attention. To be fair though, at least some of the publications/blogs that mentioned the screenshots were quick to acknowledge that they could indeed be fakes.

It is interesting to see how quickly false information can spread though, and that is clearly the point this person was trying to make. What do you think of his/her little prank? Share your thoughts.

Meanwhile, Google has released some more details about Chrome OS.

That it’s near the corner of Cedar and Shaft doesn’t help, and that Google Maps picked it up makes it a legendary prank. And if aliens happened to be flying over Hazelton, Pennsylvania around the same time the aerial photograph was taken, this is what they saw.

A one hundred and fifty foot penis.

And you wonder why the aliens rarely stop.

Google reportedly grabbed the image from Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, who took the aerial photograph in 2005. And apparently it will stay that way until the Department updates, sometime in 2009.

Here’s what happened:

Pranksters in 2004 used weed killer to etch the giant phallus into the turf of Harman-Geist Memorial Field, located in northeastern Pennsylvania. Short of sod, it would seem, the Hazelton Area School District used green paint to cover up the prank. But by the time the DCNR rolled around to survey the area, the paint had washed away.

Frank Victor, superintendent of the Hazleton Area School, upon hearing the prank is now visible from Google Maps, had no comment. "Really, what’s there to say?" he tells Hazelton’s Standard-Speaker.

The news is making the rounds in the forums, with the simple command: Go to Google Maps and enter N Cedar St & Shaft Rd Hazleton, PA 18201.

It does raise an interesting question about the potential for abuse. What is to stop someone from simply clicking dozens of links and entering the phone numbers of friends, enemies or premium numbers?

I can see the spammers making their plans now. Within weeks we’ll hear about a wave of businesses receiving phone calls with recorded messages from an ousted prince in Nigeria.

A change in verbiage in Google's terms of service for Google Maps allows users to opt-out of advertising that may be delivered through the service.

A change in verbiage in Google’s terms of service for Google Maps allows users to opt-out of advertising that may be delivered through the service.

Either Google hasn’t dispensed with its April Fool’s pranks yet, or the company has embarked on a kinder, gentler approach with its products.

The latest recipient of Google goodwill, Google Maps third-party developers, will now see a change in language in the terms of service for the product. ‘Googling Google’ blogger Garett Rogers wrote of the before and after terms of use changes, highlighting the changes between the two.

In the “before” version, Google reserved the right to start feeding advertising into map images at any time and without notice. By virtue of complying with the terms of use, users agreed to display those ads without modification.

Not very friendly corporate-speak, but given the composition of most end-user license agreements these days, not entirely unexpected either.

The new friendly Google provides 90 days notice prior to the commencement of advertising if and when it should decide to start sending ads to Maps. Users can terminate usage of Google Maps in that 90 day window, or provide Google with notice that advertising will not be accepted.

What isn’t clear is what Google’s response will be to a refusal; we hope to hear back from Google about this.

The noted change in terms of service comes in the wake of the launch of Placebase’s Pushpin LE online mapping service. Placebase offers a payment model that offers the Google Maps API, support options, and no advertising or branding on maps they deliver, in contrast to the basic Google Maps service.
