It goes without saying that Pizza Hut will sell a lot of pizza over Super Bowl weekend. To illustrate this, however, the popular pizza chain has put out the following infographic making some interesting comparisons. They posted it to their Facebook page.

Pizza Hut says: “If 2 million pizza were hours of YouTube content, there would be 228 years of viewing pleasure. If pizzas were search queries, Google would serve up the entire day’s worth of pizza in just 2.8 seconds. If we gave 1 pizza to every new Twitter user, we would run out in just 4 days. Facebook status updates every 2.8 seconds = 2 million.”

If you’re an American Express user and a pizza lover, Foursquare has a deal for you.

It’s safe to assume that plenty of people will order pizza during the Super Bowl. It’s also pretty safe to assume that a high percentage of that pizza will come from one of the country’s biggest delivery pizza chains, Pizza Hut. If you’re planing on ordering a Pizza Hut pizza during the game, don’t forget to check-in.

Starting a few hours before kickoff and running until the end of the game, you can check in a universal location called “Super Swarm Sunday” on Foursquare. When you do, make sure to unlock the $5 off Pizza Hut deal. Now, when you spend at least $10 at Pizza Hut, you’ll get a $5 credit on your AMEX card.

Here’s some FAQ about the event, from the Foursquare blog:

I don’t really care for football. Can I still check in?
Super Swarm Sunday isn’t just about football! Check in if you love the commercials, over-the-top halftime shows, the Puppy Bowl, touchdown salsa dances, or just hanging out and eating pizza with friends.

Where do I check in?
If you’re in the US, you’ll see Super Swarm Sunday when you tap ‘Check In’ on your app, starting a few hours before the game and lasting until the end of the night.

How do I unlock the Special?
Once you check in, you’ll be able to sync your American Express® Card to your foursquare account and load the Special (it takes a few seconds, and foursquare won’t store your information – we’re just providing the deal!). If you’ve synced your card before, just tap ‘Load to Card.’

How do I redeem the Special?
Spend at least $10 on your Pizza Hut order online, by phone, or in participating stores, and pay with your American Express® Card. The $5 credit will show up on your statement in a few days.

Do I need to mention the Special when I order from Pizza Hut?
Nope! It’s all taken care of by foursquare and Amex. As long as you pay with the card that you synced (and your order is over $10), you’ll see the credit on your statement in a few days.

This is one of Foursquare’s biggest check-in events ever. It’s name is a reference to a “swarm,” a Foursquare term for when you check-in with a lot of people at one location. You can earn badges for each level of swarm – 50 is a regular swarm, 250 is a super swarm, 500 is a super duper swarm, and 1000 is an epic swarm.

Badge lovers won’t be disappointed – checking in on Super Swarm Sunday will earn you a new badge. It looks like the other swarm badges but the little bees have been replaced by footballs.

Who are you rooting for in the big game? Will you be ordering pizza? Let us know in the comments.

Update: Pizza Hut announced today that its former "Twintern" now has the official title of "Tweetologist," and now holds a full-time position. From the announcement:

For more than a month, Alexa Robinson – Pizza Hut’s former summer "Twintern" who was hired as an intern to keep up with Pizza Hut fans through @pizzahut on Twitter – has been working without a job title. After extending a full-time job offer to Alexa, Pizza Hut turned to its Twitter fan base for creative suggestions for her new title. Now, thanks to the help of the loyal followers of @pizzahut, Alexa is finally ready to order her new business cards.

"As the new Tweetologist, I want to thank everyone who I have met through Twitter," said Alexa. "It was a lot of fun to see our fans and followers think outside the box, and I can’t wait to display my new title on my business card, loud and proud."

Original Article: Pizza and social media seem to have a relationship destined for headlines lately. You’ve probably read about the Domino’s YouTube video fiasco. Now on a more positive note, it’s Pizza Hut and Twitter.

Pizza Hut is looking to hire an intern specifically for Twittering. This is news because – how many mainstream companies have you heard of hiring someone specifically for Twittering – not even social media in general – just Twittering.

Stephanie Clifford at the New York Times describes the purpose of the "Twintern" (intern using Twitter…I don’t claim responsibility for the term) job:

To attend advertising shoots, product meetings and other corporate events. “They’ll be our social media journalist, chronicling in 140 characters or less what’s going on at Pizza Hut,” said Bob Kraut, the vice president for marketing communications at the company. The Twintern must also play social-media defense, monitoring Twitter for any mentions of the brand and alerting superiors whenever anything negative about the Hut is being said.

There is a full description on Yum’s (Pizza Hut’s parent company) site. According to that, the twinternship allows for many hands-on opportunities like:

- Collect and share insights and experiences while working for Pizza Hut through social and interactive media: Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, New and emerging media

- Twintern will be given unprecedented access to marketing meetings, brainstorm sessions, ad shoots and special events

- Monitor social media for pop culture news, off-the-wall stories or anything else quirky and fun that he or she thinks would be of interest to loyal Pizza Hut fans.

- Chronicle experience through video; edit and post to selected media

- Conduct media outreach for PR programs

- Assist with execution of national PR programs

It is unclear whether or not Yum has similar intentions for brands like Long John Silver’s, A&W, Taco Bell, etc. The fact that pizza is commonly ordered online (and the Domino’s incident no doubt) probably plays a direct role in why Pizza Hut is doing this.

"The major pizza chains now do 20% to 30% of their business online, but they want that figure to climb a lot higher, to 50%," says Emily Bryson York with AdAge. "Getting there will take some doing, but the journey offers lessons for other marketers also seeking to build their business online: Know your customers, make it easy and offer incentives."

Very true. Twitter can prove to be a remarkable tool for online reputation management. And as we’ve discussed at WebProNews repeatedly, there are tons of opportunities for marketers. Though keeping on the ethical side of online marketing is likely to be in the best interest of your business and your online reputation.

Not all big brands are using social media tools to the potential they could be. For this reason, it really sticks out when they do. There are plenty of small businesses you can learn a lot about ways to use social media from, but it is the big brands that have the truly wide reach. These are the ones that are easier to find, just because they’re brands that you know.

Take Pizza Hut for example. The company seems to appear in the social media news circles fairly often. One time it was for posting a job opening for a Twittering position. Another time it was for using Twitter as a tool to drive its efforts to help feed the hungry.

Look at Ford. They utilize all kinds of different social media channels. They go where the people are, and they interact with them in different ways. They keep it at a human level. They look for trends and try to determine what people want. They use Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, Scribd, Delicious, etc.

Mattel is the latest big brand to make headlines with social media efforts. The company just announced a new e-commerce site with social shopping features. WebProNews reported on that here.

You probably interact in some capacity with big brands on a daily basis, whether that is something as simple as getting a Coke out of the vending machine or running around the neighborhood in your Nikes. Find products you use. Find products you like and are interested in. Then see how they are using social media (if they are). This way you are placing yourself directly in the role of the customer, and you can evaluate exactly what you are getting out of their social media experience.

Since you can look at this from the customer’s perspective, you can use that to determine strategies that you feel work, and those that you feel don’t. It’s not a bad way to find concepts you can apply to your own business or at least some that you can test.

Pizza Hut, a brand that has been in social media-related news in the past when they sought a Twittering intern, has now launched a campaign combining social media marketing with philanthropy.

The popular pizza chain announced today that it has kicked off a campaign to donate 4 meals to World Hunger Relief for every Twitter user who re-tweets the link to the Pizza Hut World Hunger Foundation donation page.

"Global hunger has reached epic proportions this year – reaching more than 1 billion hungry people around the world," said Pizza Hut President Scott Bergren. "At Pizza Hut, our goal is to get the word out about what can be done to help feed the hungry. We’re asking our customers to help us spread the word through a simple tweet, and in exchange we will provide meals for World Hunger Relief."

According to Pizza Hut, all you have to do to help is post a tweet on Twitter that includes a link to http://ow.ly/qWn8, and the hashtag #pizzahut, and they will donate four meals to the hungry. The donation period ends on October 31. Donations will be made for the first 25,000 tweets, which will mean 100,000 meals.

Pizza Hut says the funds raised will go directly to the areas of greatest need, feeding poor school children in the developing world and helping villages become self-sustainable. Employees of Pizza Hut and other Yum! Brands restaurants will be working at hunger relief agencies, food banks, soup kitchens, and launching fundraisers.

With the summer job market being one of the worst in recent history at least some college student can get some job experience putting 140 characters or less to work for the Hut.

Of course, it appears as if there is no pay and you will need to relocate to Dallas on your own dime if you get the gig but what better resume builder these days. In addition, this may be one of the few times that parents can say that the new 140 character culture can pay benefits. The description is as follows:

The summer twinternship at Pizza Hut allows for many hands-on opportunities including:

Collect and share insights and experiences while working for Pizza Hut through social and interactive media: Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, New and emerging media

Twintern will be given unprecedented access to marketing meetings, brainstormsions, ad shoots and special events
Monitor social media for pop culture news, off-the-wall stories or anything else quirky and fun that he or she thinks would be of interest to loyal Pizza Hut fans.

Chronicle experience through video; edit and post to selected media

Conduct media outreach for PR programs

Assist with execution of national PR programs

Of course, some may see this as the speeding of the decline and fall of western civilization while others (particularly smart, aggressive and go getting college students getting ready to enter a crappy job market) will have more opportunity than ever.

My question is first who is researching their pizza in social media circles and what influence can social media have on that choice? Also, even if you spend way too much time in 140 character land (or any social media for that matter) just how much are you willing to hear from Pizza Hut? As with all of this marketing new world order this should be interesting.

Other major pizza delivery chains that offer mobile ordering include Domino’s Pizza Inc and Papa John’s International. Beginning this week Pizza Hut will offer its "Total Mobile Access" at its 6,200 stores nationwide.

"We wanted to provide maximum accessibility," Bernard Acoca, Pizza Hut’s director of digital marketing, told Reuters. "We have a core group of customers that is very tech savvy. They use their phone for everythingWe want to be where the consumers are."

In five years Pizza Hut hopes to earn half of its revenue through orders placed on computers and mobile phones. Brian Niccol, Pizza Hut CMO said," Online ordering has become one of the feasted growing segments of our business in recent years so adding Total Mobile access is the latest way we can make the process of ordering America’s Favorite Pizza more convenient for our customers."

Customers can log in to their Web site and create a "Pizza Playlist" that contains a collection of four favorite orders. After registering they can place their order through their text or mobile ordering.

"We’ve designed our ordering system to be user-friendly with just a couple of steps, as opposed to the overly complicated, multiple-step system our competition devised," Niccol said.

"While our major competitors have either mobile ordering or text ordering, we’re the first to offer both nationally. When you use Total Mobile Access, a hot and delicious Pizza Hut pizza is just a click or a text away."
