Earlier the murder conviction of Amanda Knox was overturned. Knox, 24, collapsed in tears after the jury declared that the evidence against her was not reliable. She was taken back to prison where she will be formally freed.

Leading up to the reading, you could see that Knox was anxiously awaiting the official word from the jury. You saw her breathing quite heavily and bring her hands up to her face several times. At one point her lawyer leaned in and was talking with Knox, it looked as though she could be sick at any moment.

Below are some powerful images from the verdict reading:

Google launched a new version of Picasa today. It comes with several new features, but a cool facial recognition feature for slideshows is sure to get the most attention, and is certainly the one Google is putting front and center. It’s called "Face Movies".

"Face movies create a movie based around one person both figuratively and literally," explains Google’s Jonathan Sposato. "Instead of the usual transition from one photo to the next, the images align themselves to the face in the photo. This creates an extremely smooth viewing experience which allows the person in the photos to remain the focus rather than the transition effects themselves.

See below:

There is no word on when this feature will make its way to Picasa Web Albums, but hopefully it will at some point.

Other features of Picasa 3.8 include Picnik integration (which was released for Picasa Web Albums recently), batch upload from Picasa to Picasa Web Albums, and some metadata updates.

The name of Google Maps is pretty self-defining. Google is the owner, and maps are those little help-you-find-your-way drawings. But now a new update is tossing books, pictures, and videos into the equation.

A quirky LatLong Blog entry (“Posted by The Google Maps Search Box”) states, “I can now search for geotagged photos from Panoramio, such as Big Ben in London and Pyramids in Egypt, as well as videos from YouTube (our own Google Geyser and Base jumping in Rio). I can even look up books from Google Book Search! (Try Christmas books in Jerusalem). Those results will appear as blue markers on the map.”

The interface isn’t exactly stunning – what happened to the clean and simple Google way? – but it does work. However – and I’m not sure that this is such a bad thing – the feature update isn’t guaranteed to turn up something for every object you can imagine.

On a related note, Greg Sterling adds, “This is all content that can be found in Google Earth, which shares the same platform as Maps. Increasingly the two products are less distinct and more of Earth’s content and functionality are making their way into Maps (terrain is another good example). Another way to look at this is as the introduction of multiple forms of content (a la Universal Search) into Maps.”

Oh, and by the way – The Google Maps Search Box apparently doesn’t enjoy being pestered with questions about local pizza joints.

Using "people feeds" users can subscribe to the people in your address book and receive the content they want to share with you from a number of sites. The list of sites that are compatible with Pulse include, Amazon, AOL Pictures, Del.icio.us, Digg, Flickr, Jaiku, Last.fm, LiveJournal, MySpace, Picasa, Pownce, Smugmug, Tumblr, Twitter, Webshots, Windows Live Spaces, Xanga, Yahoo 360, Yelp and YouTube.

The company says they have plans to add more sites that are compatible with Pulse.

"Pulse represents the natural evolution of Plaxo," said Todd Masonis, Founder and VP of Products. "It’s all about keeping you more richly connected to the people you actually know, by transforming your address book into a true social network for your real personal and professional relationships."

Pulse users can share information publicly or only with people within their network. Other features of Pulse include one-to-one connections designed for categorization of relationships into family, friends and business network. It also has a share bar for sending messages, links or videos to those in your network.

Michel Telendro tells me it has become a search engine optimization practice (black to gray-hat, I assume) of hotlinking images from other servers… to rank your own site well in Google Image search results.

How does that work? Well, you might have noticed that Google Images doesn’t just return pages from where a picture originates; for instance, querying Google Images for site:google.com, Google among other results shows a page from bbs.mydriver.com… which simply includes a JPG from somewhere at groups-beta.google.com. When you click-through to that page, it will then not be the origin site’s ads that will be displayed, of course, but the ads of MyDrivers.com, even though they likely don’t own the pic.

Michel, who tried this out, says “I do one of this hotlinking with one flickr image in a new domain (3 weeks, no backlinks) and in one week I was ranking #3 for that keyword in [Google Images].”

Case in point – do an image search for paris in Spanish Google, and of the top 5 results, all but 1 are hotlinking the image. Even when you do a Google web search, thanks to the direct image results box on top of the web results, a hot linker ranks top for paris. Michel says, “I think there are zillions of examples…”

Now, these aren’t all highly optimized spam sites, but partly just your average innocent blogs (and some may even hotlink because they pay the origin domain for hosting, though that’s certainly not true for all hotlinkers). Indeed, hotlinking an image without asking exposes your site to the risk of defacement; the image owner just needs to replace the picture with something shocking, and it will then display on your site.

Still, it seems a little wrong for Google to return these context pages before the origin HTML page, in those cases where there exists one. Of course, Google may not know the origin page at all times (I cross-checked this one one of my domains, where images were indexed due to hotlinking from other domains, while my context HTML page wasn’t yet in the Google index). Even then, Google could down-rank those results which just hotlink something. Then again, even if you copy an image to your own server, it doesn’t mean you’re always the photo owner…

[Thanks Michel!]

Snicker, laugh, chortle, chuckle gaffaw, hmm, wait, what’d he say? That seems to be the overall reaction to vlogger Ze Frank’s keynote address this morning at Affiliate Summit 2007 in Miami.

Speaking to the Web 2.0 outbreak, sources say it wasn’t clear if Ze had a point, but he was entertaining. And maybe that was the point, after all, a living analogy of the topic.

Or maybe this was it: In a changing Internet world, get the audience to do the work for you.

This is a twist on old approach to communicating with the audience, like, for example, in-flight safety cards, where the audience works to decipher illustrations about how not to die.

Ze Frank did a walk-through of Anna’s In-Flight Safety Page, a resource he attempted to use to overcome a fear of flying. You’ll note from the webpage that fiery crash pictures and instructions about how to slingshot Grandma with a paper cup just aren’t all that helpful.

And that’s not what Ze Frank meant about making the audience do the work for you. It was more like what is meant by viral marketing, which is what launched Ze Frank into notoriety, which is why he gives keynotes at conferences now.

One zany video was circulated, and he continued to feed the Internet upon request, each of the morsels passing through the system and dropping into the "crapucopia" that is Web 2.0.

In a twisted way then, like what Thomas Crapper did for indoor plumbing, technology is a facilitator for the human experience. That experience is now more universal in an age of user-generated content as there are no longer barriers to entry in the realms of content production, or relaying your life experience to others who smell and understand.

And then they talk about it, bringing us to point number 2 (get it?), putting everyone square in the earshot of marketers who don’t have to work as hard to know what the consumer is thinking.

See how that works?

Oh, and apparently "he got lots of penises." Thanks for letting us know, Brad. Next time, we could do with an explanation. Nobody said the audience should work that hard.
