HTC ChaCha and Salsa Help Cement Facebook’s Future As Social Leader

Facebook is now officially a hard key on phones, thanks to HTC, which announced two new Android devices with such a feature: the HTC ChaCha and the HTC Salsa. 

Like most smartphones have a button for search, these two phones have a button for sharing. The concept is simple, whatever app you’re in or whatever content you’re viewing, you can instantly share that to Facebook with a quick press of a button. The button pulsates with light whenever there is an opportunity to share content, so it even goes out of its way to encourage sharing. 

Report: iOS Grew Faster Than Android in January

Millennial Media released its Mobile Mix report for January, looking at trends for connected devices, mobile manufacturers, operating systems, and apps. "Last month we saw significant OS and Manufacturer growth on our network," a representative for the firm tells WebProNews. "iOS outpaced all other operating systems experiencing a 47% increase month-over-month. HTC claimed the number two spot on our Top Manufacturers ranking and is quickly closing the gap with Apple for the top manufacturer spot."

Cheap iPhones Coming This Summer?

Rumor has it that this summer, Apple will release a new line of cheap iPhones, which will cost about half as much as the current iPhone 4. 

A report from the Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter," says:

Nokia and Microsoft Partner To Create “Third” Smartphone Horse

Nokia and Microsoft announced a strategic partnership for creating a new mobile ecosystem presumably aimed at taking on Apple, Android, RIM, and HP, though Nokia CEO Stephen Elop says it’s now a "three-horse race." 

HP TouchPad, Veer and Pre3 Smartphones with webOS Introduced

Hewlett-Packard (HP) today announced the TouchPad, described as a version of webOS for the big screen. It’s essentially an iPad competitor, and is due out this summer. 

"Today we’re embarking on a new era of webOS with the goal of linking a wide family of HP products through the best mobile experience available," said Jon Rubinstein, SVP and GM of HP’s Palm Global Business Unit. "The flexibility of the webOS platform makes it ideal for creating a range of innovative devices that work together to keep you better connected to your world."

Report Names Android World’s Leading Smartphone Platform

Android is now the leading smartphone platform according to Canalys, which just published its Q4 2010 report on the subject. Shipments of smartphones with Google’s mobile operating system reached 32.9 million. 

The fourth quarter saw 101.2 million smart phone shipments in all, representing an in crease of 89% year-over-year.

Facebook Shuts Down Facebook Phone Rumors…Again

Every now and then, rumors will start about a mythical Facebook phone. Eventually, Facebook will shoot them down, as is the case this week. 

The rumor, this time, was that HTC was going to launch a Facebook branded phone at Mobile World Congress next month. Details of the phone were made available as well, and rumors began to spiral into "Facebook’s going to compete with Apple and Android" territory. 

Use Your Existing Number For Google Voice, But Pay Generously For It

Some Google Voice users noticed a feature that appeared in their accounts called Number Porting. This means adding your existing number to Google Voice, as opposed to having to use a new phone number entirely for the service, which users have had to do up until this point. 

The feature is evidently only being tested for the time being, but will could go mainstream in the future. If you don’t have to get a new number, there’s a much bigger incentive to use Google Voice…that is if you don’t mind paying the price.   

Android Surpasses iOS For First Time on Millennial Media

Millennial Media has released its monthly Mobile Mix report looking at the smartphone market for the month of December. For the first time, Android surpassed iOS as the largest smartphone OS on the Millennial network, with an 8% increase month-over-month and 46% impression share on the firm’s network in December. iOS currently has a 32% share.

For context, Millennial’s network is the largest mobile ad network in the U.S. 

iOS 4.3 Will Reportedly Give All iPhones Personal Hotspot

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably heard that Verizon is getting the iPhone next month. One part of the announcement that excited a lot of people, beyond the extension of the iPhone’s availability was that the iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless would include new Personal Hotspot capabilities, enabling users to connect up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices. 

iPhone for Verizon Coming February 10

Apple and Verizon officially announced the iPhone 4 for Verizon today. Verizon includes the tagline, "The phone that changed everything. Coming to America’s most reliable network."

The iPhone 4 will be available on the Verizon Wireless network beginning on Thursday, February 10, and qualified Verizon Wireless customers will be given the opportunity to pre-order it online on February 3.

Windows Phone 7 Devices Available in the U.S. How Will They Sell?

Windows Phone 7 devices went on sale in the United States today with models available in AT&T and T-Mobile, stores.

Microsoft is sharing results from a Harris Interactive survey to help push its new operating system. The thinking is that Windows phones are "designed to get users in, out and back to life."

Nexus Two Rumored To Be Coming In Less Than 2 Weeks

Rumor has it that the Nexus Two will be announced at a press conference on November 8th in New York. The announcement would come from Google and Samsung together, and the device would be he first to ship with the next version of Android – version 2.3 aka: Gingerbread. It would also be available on more than one carrier. 

Android Passes iPhone in Revenue on Major Ad Network

Millennial Media, which claims to have the largest data set of any third-party U.S. mobile ad network,  reports that Android revenue exceeded iPhone-only revenue for its network. Android requests grew by 26% from the previous month,and 1283% since January.

Smartphone Users Now Account for Most Mobile Browser and App Users

New data from comScore indicates that smartphone users now make up the majority of mobile browser and app users, at least in the United States. 

The firm finds that the number of Smartphone users accessing mobile content through browsers and apps now surpasses that of non-smartphone users, claiming that in the 3 month average ending in August, Smartphone subscribers made up 60% of those who used a downloaded app and 55% of those who used a browser.
