People’s search habits on Twitter aren’t so different from their search habits elsewhere; Ashton Kutcher may be the first Twitterer to grab a million followers; and an Arkansas judge says a juror’s reckless tweeting does not warrant a new trial.

At first glance Hitwise’s report on popular Twitter search terms you might, like I did, go “et tu, Twitterati?” Heather Dougherty’s top ten list showing Paris Hilton at the top seemed like a sure sign there’s just no hope for humanity if all humanity wants to know any where on the Web is whatever the hell Paris Hilton is doing.

Upon closer inspection that list is the top ten search entertainment personalities, which makes one feel only slightly better, considering all the entertainment personalities to choose from; I mean, really, the masses are still clamoring over her? Paris trumps Oprah on that list, who trumps Jeremy Davis, who plays a character on the show “Lost.” His fictional name, Daniel Faraday trumped John Mayer. (The data was taken from the last week of March.)

The most popular overall search term on Twitter was actually for “Twilight,” presumably driven by the movie’s DVD release and not people scrambling to find others making fun of it. The terms that follow are without explanation: redco and parkersburg.

Don Dodge

Presumably the Twitter searching populace isn’t searching for Ashton Kutcher because they’ve already found him. Microsoft’s Don Dodge calculates that at the rate Kutcher’s account is acquiring followers, he’ll have a million by April 21. Currently, he has about 750,000.

While most Twitterers appear to be engrossed in Hollywood lala-land, more serious issues have been afoot. In Arkansas, a juror’s bragging about handing over $12 million of a company’s money and advising his followers not to buy their products put the verdict in jeopardy when defense counsel cried mistrial for improper juror conduct. The judge thought otherwise, admitting the juror’s tweets were in bad taste bud didn’t constitute improper conduct

UPDATE: Ms. Dougherty has supplied the top 25 overall Twitter search terms for the week ending March 21. They are as follows:

Well, socially speaking, there being more interest in First Lady-Elect Michelle Obama than in Britney Spears or Paris Hilton is a positive change, one that bodes well for society. On the flip side, as Inauguration Day nears, spammers are rewarding that renewed interest in affairs of state with an onslaught of junk mail.

Of the 1.4 million spam emails analyzed by SPAMfighter in December, Michelle Obama was the subject nearly five times as much as Britney Spears was, nearly six times as often as Paris Hilton, and ten times as much as Angelina Jolie.

Maybe spammers are making use of free online measurement tools like Google Trends to map out current spikes in interest. A Google Trends analysis shows Obama beating the former queens of the Internet lately as well.

Michelle isn’t nearly as spamtastically popular as her husband, whose name is targeted over three times more. SPAMfighter predicts that as we approach the President-Elect’s inauguration Obamaspam* will only increase.

“This is only the tip of the iceberg,” said SPAMfighter cofounder and CMO Martin Thorburg. “As the big inauguration day nears, it’s likely we’ll see an even bigger increase in Obama related spam. E-mail users can beat spammers to the punch, however they must be vigilant.

“E-mail users should get their Michelle Obama and celebrity gossip fix from trusted blogs and Web sites rather than risk opening unsolicited e-mails. By clicking on spam, users identify their e-mails as a working address and it is then sold off to more spammers resulting in even more spam. It’s important that we work together to help eliminate spam.”

Like a bag of Oreos and a quart of Hawaiian Punch, there were topics in 2007 that bloggers couldn’t help from overindulging in during the year.

Blog tracking application maker BuzzLogic said bloggers couldn’t get enough of hotel heiress and weeping jailbird Hilton this year. Obsessing over Hilton easily outpaced postings about mother of the year candidate Britney Spears, and the blossoming train wrecks of the careers of Lindsay Lohan and Amy Winehouse.

Michael Vick and his dogfighting case brought out a lot of sports blog commentary. The flashy star’s 23-month federal sentence today capped off several months of speculation in and out of the blogosphere.

The Red Sox have a World Series crown, but people couldn’t stop blogging about the Yankees when it came to teams being talked about in the most influential blogs. Barry Bonds and Tom Brady received a lot of attention for very different reasons.

Politics may be the fuel that fires the blogosphere, even more than technology due to the way it appeals across social and economic bounds. President Bush and Republican laywer-shooing Vice President Dick Cheney weren’t just the two most talked about men in politics, but in blogs as a whole, according to BuzzLogic.

When Google bought YouTube, the second question people asked (after "what about the copyright nightmare?) was about how Google planned to introduce advertising into a pure video vacuum. YouTubers have never been keen on being sold anything, not even Paris Hilton.

In case you forgot, back when Paris Hilton launched her own special YouTube channel to promote her silly little song, purist YouTubers chimed in with their fears that the site would become too commercial.

Well, it’s too late for that now. It’s a marketer’s world these days, whether you’re selling hotel rooms or politics. But the burning debate surrounding video ads has been over whether pre-roll, mid-roll, or post roll ads were best.

Advertisers like pre-roll ads the best, but they can push the viewer to push the "Stop" button. People rightly assume viewers won’t stick around for post-roll. Mid-roll ads operate on the same premise as TV and radio ads – hook the viewer, make them wait a few seconds, and then get back to the content.

Google and YouTube know their touchy demographic, though. They won’t tolerate any in-video ads for long, if at all. This must be why they’re falling back on old standards: banners and pop-ups.

Yes, pop-ups.

If you have you’re Firefox browser tuned right, you won’t be able to see what Beet.tv’s Andy Plesser is pointing to. So use Internet Explorer or check out Plesser’s Dennis Kucinich video screen shot of the Best Western pop-up ad.

The banner ads seem more contextual. Click to view a Kucinich video and you may see a banner ad for YouTube’s latest baby, CitizenTube.

Though it seems backwards at first for such a Web 2.0 marketplace, it makes a lot of sense to do it this way. YouTubers just won’t tolerate their pure user-generated haven being interrupted constantly by in-vid advertisements.

The pop-ups may get annoying though. It will be interesting to see how the YouTube crowd responds.

YouTube’s quest to maximize its monetary potential culminates with a night in Paris. Sorry. Wrong preposition. A night with Paris. Kicking off the premiere video site’s venture into rich media advertising, Paris Hilton gets her own channel to promote her music video and album release.

Paris says:

If you show me real love baby
I’ll show you mine

Um. That’s not how my uncle used to say it.

The YouTube Paris Hilton channel was created by Warner Brothers through an arrangement with the site to be the first to take advantage of customized video channels for advertisers. Fox is also in on it and plans to promote the next season of “Prison Break.”

Up to 100 million videos per day are viewed at YouTube, a number Michael Arrington says costs the site around $1 million in bandwidth fees per month. Having secured over $11 million from Sequoia Capital, the site already offered banner advertising and sponsorships..

It’s the business aspect that worries some YouTubers. Currently, there are over 600 comments on Paris’ video premier, pulling together a mixed bag of reactions. The first concerns are over the MTV-ization of the site dominated by user content. The polish is just irritating.

“Yeah, I like YouTube how it is,” posts alcoholicferrets, “with its own celebrities and the random sh*t people post…I don’t want it to be like MTV.”

“Agreed,” writes libra1019. “This is what has p**sed me off about youtube. now that it has become “famous”, celebrities are all wanting to get on it to post their videos, which are edited so much that its not that great of a video. Most of them never go on these sites before they even become popular or even now to check out other people’s videos.”

Those sentiments are tempered with fan mail, the obligatory Beavis-and-Butthead “she’s hot” comments, as well as dropped email addresses alongside date invites. Nice try, jimi_hendrix38@

You know, you probably shouldn’t post email on public sites like that. Haven’t you heard the rules yet?
