Ever since Google’s widely publicized acquisition of YouTube, video enthusiasts have been chomping at the bit to see how the search giant would integrate the video-sharing site into the framework of its proprietary services. It appears that Google has chosen Orkut for its first YouTube mashup.

Social networking has become one of the most buzz-worthy news terms in recent memory as the concept as spread at a viral rate throughout the realms of marketing and eCommerce, respectively.

One might think that the top users in Orkut would be Americans. Given that this is a Google sponsored social-networking site, this seems logical. But the truth is that thousands of Brazilians have become loyal devotees of Google’s popular new service.

Affinity Engines, a social networking service provider, filed a lawsuit against Google on May 25. The suit claims that Google’s social network, Orkut, is using a source code that was stolen by an engineer that was previously employed by Affinity.

Google is very protective of its Orkut online community. Its terms of service page is replete with rules and regulations concerning member use. One of the rules, “using any robot, spider, site search/retrieval application, or other device to retrieve or index any portion or the orkut.com service,” has been violated, causing Google to issue a cease and desist decree.

Philipp Lenssen of Google Blogoscoped recently reported on leaked Orkut data. He’d found a non-Google site that allowed visitors to trace the relationships between Orkut members on a map of the United States.

An email posted on the Blogoscoped blog from Rolan Yang of New Jersey, “A while back, an associate of mine aquired a mirror of the entire Orkut website.” He plugged the information into a data mapper to map out the relationships between Orkut members within the US.

If you keep tabs on the latest search engine news, you’ll no doubt realize that we are getting closer to a merging of search engine technology and social networking. While Google may have created the sizzle with its recent launch of Orkut along with rumors that it may one day roll it into its search engine, there is a company already making headway with social searching.
