Another component of Yahoo’s open content strategy comes as part of the site’s search service, with plans to open a development platform for search soon.

Yahoo’s big search-related news as the SMX West Conference opens today presents the potential for site publishers to place more of their information into Yahoo Search.

Though no date was announced at the Yahoo Search blog post about opening search, the prospect of having an open platform and its potential for delivering extra information to searchers should have webmasters willing to try it. From the Yahoo Search blog:

Site owners will be able to provide all types of additional information about their site directly to Yahoo! Search. So instead of a simple title, abstract and URL, for the first time users will see rich results that incorporate the massive amount of data buried in websites — ratings and reviews, images, deep links, and all kinds of other useful data — directly on the Yahoo! Search results page.

As sites like the New York Times, WebMD, and others contribute data to the platform, Yahoo’s Machined Learned Ranking presents the added info to search results. In one example, a basic text link to a restaurant review on Yelp’s website becomes a more detailed listing, with links to reviews and a photo of the establishment.

We can safely say the age of the ten to a page, plain text search results has come to an end. With the ability to make a more eye-grabbing listing, we don’t see site publishers leaving traffic on the table if they can make their results stand out in search.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook, sent the blogosphere into a digileptic (digital + epileptic) episode yesterday evening, announcing that Facebook was now officially open for you to tamper with.

Zuckerberg’s big buzz-phrase was "social operating system," three little words that fulfills an earlier promise to open up the Facebook platform so developers could create widgets capable of serving and connecting the social network’s 24 million and growing users.

The twenty-something CEO made the announcement to a group of developers in Silicon Valley, all of whom, it would seem began blogging immediately (TechMeme has no fewer than 70 links on the subject from press and bloggers – interesting TechCrunch’s sudden dominance at that site, with Arrington trumping the NYT, Forbes, BusinessWeek, Scoble, well, everybody; Gabe still crashing on your couch sometimes Mike?).

Sixty-five companies had about 80 Facebook applications ready to go upon this announcement, including Amazon’s book and CD recommendation widget, and integration with Microsoft’s Popfly, Virtual Earth, and Xbox Live.

The open platform allows deep integration into the Facebook community, mass distribution in the network, and great new opportunities for businesses to connect with a growing social network.

Buried under all that widgetizing and blog-buzz (the digilepsy) was also the release of Facebook Video, double the company’s assault by adding YouTube to MySpace to the list of competitors. The player isn’t embeddable elsewhere though; it looks like Zuckerberg wants to keep users on-site.

Since opening up beyond college students last fall, Facebook’s membership has doubled and is growing by about 3 percent (1 million) weekly, putting it on pace to catch up with MySpace relatively quickly.

For marketers, the announcement paves the way for highly targeted advertising. Robert Scoble explains:

It’s going to let Facebook deliver very targeted advertising…. Much more than many more popular sites. Look at Digg, for instance, Can you figure anything out about the users of Digg? No. So, how will you send targeted advertising to them?

Some interesting facts about Facebook:

6th most trafficked site in the US
Average 20 minutes per user per day
Over 40 billion page view monthly
Half of Facebook users are out of college
