Verizon FiOS customers who subscribe to HBO will be able to watch the cable television’s programming online for free, starting tomorrow.

Customers must subscribe to both FiOS TV and FiOS Internet to gain free access to the online video site HBO Go. HBO Go will support Verizon subaccounts and allow up to three users in the same house access content.

HBO Go allows users to create a watchlist where bookmarked content can be placed for later viewing and where the user will be notified to the arrival of new episodes. Users will also be able to customize their settings via multiple browsing and viewing options.

HBO Go will feature over 600 hours of programming, which is four times more viewing choices than HBO On Demand. Users will have access to HBO original programming, films, miniseries, documentaries, sports and movies. HBO Go will be updated more frequently than the company’s on demand service.

"HBO GO adds more value to FiOS TV customers’ HBO subscriptions with the convenience of accessing their programming in more ways and in more places," said Shawn Strickland, vice president of consumer strategy and planning for Verizon

"We’re excited to add this deeper, richer experience to our already extensive HBO offerings, further enhancing the TV and Internet experience that only FiOS delivers."

Last.FM has added a new on demand song streaming service with the support from all four major labels and 150,000 indie labels and artists from distributors including The Orchard, CD Baby, IODA, Naxos.

Users can listen to a track free up to three times, after which they are pointed iTunes, Amazon or 7Digital for purchase.

The free on demand service launched Wednesday in the US, UK and Germany and is scheduled to roll out globally in the coming months

The site also launched a new program for artists not signed with a label. They can upload their music to Last.fm and will receive payment every time a tracks is played. This allows acts without a traditional recording or publishing deal to offer their music free while still generating revenue.

"We’re building a platform to help redesign the music economy, enabling artists and labels to earn revenue according to how people listen, rather than how they buy," said Last.fm’s other co-founder, Felix Miller. "Now we can offer the arrangement to unsigned music creators too. For the first time, anyone can upload tracks and get paid when those tracks are played. It’s a whole different model – one that benefits the artists, labels and advertisers – but most of all the listeners."

COMMENTARY -

Napster had launched a similar service only to pull back after a year. But the move goes a long way in differentiating Last.FM from Pandora and other competitors although it may not be enough to make someone switch services. It will be most interesting to watch how others in the sector react.

As someone who has made several trips to Disney’s theme parks, I’m one of many people who can attest to the company’s dedication to prying money from people’s wallets while entertaining them. Disney doesn’t do anything if they don’t see a clear path to a payday.

The latest announcement of Disney teaming with Microsoft to offer movie rentals on demand isn’t too surprising. Disney has been standing cheerfully with Apple’s Steve Jobs both before and after buying his Pixar movie studios, and Disney content abounds on iTunes, so they aren’t strangers to the downloadable concept.

Disney’s new deal places an on-demand option on the Xbox Live Marketplace for Xbox 360 gamers. Disney movies and ABC television choices, in standard and high-definition formats, have become available. Microsoft and Disney disclosed this at the E3 Media & Business Summit.

This makes the Xbox 360 a little more family-friendly, as the gaming console has never been known as being oriented toward the younger market. The option to bring in a Disney movie on the Xbox 360 might make it more acceptable to parents who would probably not choose to buy one otherwise.

It is an important partnership due to Disney’s famed control over its content, especially the animated features. Disney isn’t going to risk losing money on them no matter how long ago the movies were released.

That brings us to Toontown, Disney’s multiplayer online game with some 17.5 million characters running around its colorful streets (many people create more than one toon, and can have up to six per account). Mediaweek disclosed Disney would shift the game from a subscription model to ad-supported sometime this fall.

Some players have been trying out the ad-supported version in beta since May. Disney charges a $9.95 per month subscription, with people willingly paying for it.

At first glance it’s tempting to compare the shift to AOL’s change from subscription to advertising as a revenue model. AOL had been hemorrhaging subscribers and needed to make a dramatic change. Disney isn’t under that same pressure.

The potential earnings for Toontown under an ad model must be really impressive. Saying that Disney doesn’t like to give things away is like suggesting your fingertips may redden slightly upon touching the surface of the Sun.
