The service formerly known as Rocketmail, now with a heaping helping of Oddpost in the mix, reached a milestone anniversary this month.

John Kremer, vice president for Yahoo Mail, marked the anniversary on the official Yahoo blog with a list of highlights since October 1997.

That was when Yahoo Mail launched in its first incarnation, bringing people a whopping 3MB of storage space. In March of this year, Yahoo threw away the limits and gave Mail users unlimited storage.

Kremer also provided an interesting memory of the time before criminal spammers were operating in force online:

Recently Yahoo unveiled some new features for their email service, Yahoo Mail. Some of the new features include improved search, Address AutoComplete, and full implementation of DomainKeys.

In the Yahoo search blog Brad Garlinghouse stated “As of today, you can perform deeper searches of all the e-mail you’ve archived on Yahoo! Mail. This is especially important now that anyone can keep up to 250mb of e-mail on Yahoo! Mail. You can search specific message headers, the full message bodies, within specific folders, and so on. You’ll find that searching the Web from your Yahoo! Mail inbox is easier too. How many times has something you read in your e-mail caused you to go search the Web?”

Yahoo has also begun using DomainKeys to sign all outbound messages. DomainKeys authenticates the actual origin of email messages; this could help prevent spoofing attacks and identity theft.

Another tool that Yahoo added was the AutoComplete feature, integrating Oddpost technology. This allows Yahoo Mail to automatically find addresses as they are being typed into the desired area. They promise “his feature is really just the tip of the iceberg with regards to how we’re integrating the Oddpost technology”. Yahoo acquired Oddpost last July.

Discuss the new Yahoo Mail features at WebProWorld the WebProNews forum.

Email application Oddpost is “delighted” to no longer be accepting new accounts, the company announced, as of July 9th. Why? Because Oddpost has been acquired by popular web portal Yahoo.

Current Oddpost users don’t have to worry about an interruption in service. However, Oddpost promises to use their web application technology to create an upcoming Yahoo! Mail product. After the product’s release, current Oddpost accounts will be “migrated.” “Until then, all Oddpost subscriptions will be extended, free of charge,” the company says. Support will also continue to be offered to Oddpost accounts.

Once the migration is complete, Oddpost users will also get a free year of Yahoo! Mail’s premium service, which includes 2 Gigabytes of storage, spam filters, virus protection, and more.

A release date for the new product has not been determined. Oddpost claims to be “thrilled” about the upcoming changes.

With an interface based on Microsoft’s Outlook, Oddpost offers perks such as a news and weblog aggregator, spam filters, and no advertisements. The application is web-based so there is no download or installation process.

In 2003, San Francisco-based Oddpost was declared the best web-based email program by PC World and won PC Magazine’s Editors’ Choice Award for best alternative web mail.
