Google Reader is becoming the online companion to and synchronization platform for NewsGator’s RSS readers including FeedDemon and NetNewsWire. Users have until August 31 to migrate to Google Reader, when NewsGator will shut down NewsGator Online.

To migrate RSS subscriptions, FeedDemon/NetNewsWire users will need to:

1. Download the latest version of FeedDemon/NetNewsWire

2. Sign up for a Google Reader account

3. Associate the Google Reader account with the FeedDemon/NetNewsWire product (A step-by-step wizard is provided within the new version of FeedDemon/NetNewsWire

There are different instructions for other NewsGator products here. NewsGator says on the company blog:

Users of FeedDemon, NetNewsWire for Mac, and NetNewsWire for the iPhone will have 30 days to download new versions of these applications that can synchronize with Google Reader. Syncing will give you a consistent reading experience across your PC, Mac, iPhone, and web browser. For example, if you add a new RSS feed, organize your folders, or mark some stories as read on one device, the changes will immediately reflect across the others. Users of NewsGator Go! can select from the mobile RSS reader options that synchronize with Google Reader.

The bottom line for you: we keep improving our client applications, and now you can sync with and use the web based RSS reader you’ve been asking for. We’ve been working with the Google team to make these changes as smooth as possible, and they are thrilled to welcome all NewsGator users to the Reader family.

New versions of FeedDemon and NetNewsWire are currently available, and a new version of NetNewsWire for the iPhone will be available soon. Check out the FAQ page for more information about changes to NewsGator’s RSS reader products.

Now this is useful – a free RSS reader for your mobile phone from NewsGator.

What makes it especially interesting is that it’s been released specifically for the iPhone – it’s called NewsGator Mobile for iPhone – but works on any mobile device.

Well, it works brilliantly on my Nokia N73 which is about as far from an iPhone as you can imagine.

Try it from your mobile phone – http://m.newsgator.com/

Earlier this month, I wondered whether a paid subscription with NewsGator Online (NGO) was worth continuing or not as my preferred RSS reader is FeedDemon. Both synchronize together but I just don’t use NGO (if I do use a web-based reader, it’s Google Reader).

In the end, I didn’t continue a paid subscription but I do have the free one.

I still don’t use NGO. But this mobile reader is great as it shows me on my phone all the feeds I subscribe to that are synchronized with FeedDemon.

Nice!

A small dream of mine came true. We’ve been preaching an ecosystem of tools for some time now. We’ve helped customers stitch them together in interesting ways.

In fact, Andrew McAfee’s original article on Enterprise 2.0 was borne from observing what was happening in one of our customers and projecting into the future. Well, future happens fast.

Looking back, look what I blogged just before the first Web 2.0 conference:

I’m providing a workshop on Enterprise Social Software with Socialtext Customer Mike Pusateri from Disney. You might recall his great presentation at the at the O’Reilly Emerging Technology Confererence in February. Mike and his team are leading the way with how they are using lightweight web-native tools as a platform for productivity. Not just how they use Socialtext for project communication, but how they stitch it together Moveable Type and Newsgator for an ecosystem of tools with RSS.

That was then, this is now. I provided a workship on Enterprise 2.0.

Tuesday we announced SuiteTwo, The Enterprise 2.0 Suite powered by Intel. Intel is distributing the Best of Breed wiki (Socialtext), blog (Six Apart), Feed Aggregation (Newsgator) and Feed Publishing (SimpleFeed), supported by Spikesource, through its channels including Dell, NEC, Ingram, Novell and Red Hat.

This fulfills Andrew McAfee’s vision of Enterprise 2.0. In a box. Made simple for Small-to-Mid-sized Enterprises. Extensible because we’ve all supported open APIs. Enterprise 2.0 is freeform social software adapted for organizations. SuiteTwo is the first offering to realize the SLATES paradigm:

SLATES = Search | Links | Authorship | Tags | Extensions | Signals

In the latest issue of the Harvard Business Review, McAfee went further to distinguish this Network IT (NIT) from Functional IT and Enterprise IT:

As the DrKW example illustrates, NIT’s principal capabilities include the following:

Facilitating collaboration. Network technologies allow employees to work together but don’t define who should work with whom or what projects employees should work on. At DrKW, ad hoc teams have formed because employees read one another’s blogs. These teams have used the wiki to accomplish tasks, and they have disbanded without orders from senior executives.

Allowing expressions of judgment. NITs are egalitarian technologies that let people express opinions. DrKW employees use blogs to voice their views about everything from open-source software to interest rate movements.

Fostering emergence. “Emergence” is the appearance of high-level patterns or information because of low-level interactions. These patterns are useful because they allow managers to compare how work is done with how it’s supposed to be done. Emergence is also valuable for users. For instance, employees can easily search and navigate DrKW’s blogs and wiki for trends and data even though nobody is in charge of making them easy to use.

…Employees exploit older NITs such as e-mail and instant messaging on their own, but business leaders have a role to play in exploiting newer technologies like blogs and wikis. They can help sustain and increase the use of complements to make the technology continually more effective, primarily by guiding users. Darren Leonard, a managing director in the global equity derivatives business at Dresdner Kleinwort, recalls how he got his colleagues to use the company’s wiki: “First, if a wiki has no structure, it’s perceived not as an opportunity but as anarchy, and our people have no time for anarchy. I went back to my initial pages and rewrote them to be a lot more directive. For example, I made a page with the agenda for an upcoming meeting and asked people to add to it. Second, wikis have to be clearly better than other ways of collaborating. There have to be uses [for them] that demonstrate their power. One of these uses came prior to a special senior management meeting where we could bring questions from our groups and get them answered. I put up a pageasking my [team members] what questions they wanted me to ask on their behalf. People used the page to post questions, edit them, and discuss which ones were the most important and why. That really accelerated wiki use. Finally, old habits are hard to break. The tendency is for people to keep using e-mail because that’s what they know….I have to [tell them], I’m not reading e-mails on this topic. Use the wiki’ or Everyone’s assignments are on this page-use the same page to report on progress.’”

Lead users and enterprises already work this way today. Only they do so without usable efficiency. Integrated single sign-on, search and tag cloud are just the beginning. One click subscription to a page, blog post, search query, report, weblog and wiki make feeds usable (unlike today’s user experience, when they click on an orange icon and think their browser is broken). Rapidly form groups, draft together on a wiki page, publish to a blog and track results.

Beyond making such tasks efficient, the benefits to productivity, discovering emergent intelligence and high-engagement marketing are significant. Very soon a user will wake up in the morning, log in to SuiteTwo, immediately recognize something emerging. With the top blog posts telling her what the company is talking about, the top wiki pages showing her what people are working on, top posts from the outside that her company is subscribed to and the feedback from what they are publishing — something will emerge. She recognizes the opportunity, pulls on the social fabric and easily forms a diverse group of experts. They follow new feeds and generates others while working with a little productive friction. They develop a plan and draft a new offering in the wiki. They publish to a public blog and track where it goes. The feedback loops continue, she goes home for the day and the organization is bound to adapt again.

This isn’t your Dad’s enterprise, but one you will be working with soon.

One could almost preface the SuiteTwo announcement from the Web 2.0 Summit with a Sesame Street-like “this has been brought to you by the letter S.” Just look at the companies involved:

SimpleFeed
Socialtext
SpikeSource
Six Apart
Newsgator

Like I said, “almost.” One of these things is not like the other, etc.

All of these companies have Intel Capital in common as a contact point, bringing them together to create SuiteTwo. Each provides software stemming from their area of expertise. This means enterprise strength wikis, news aggregation, RSS feed creation and distribution, blogging, and a platform to integrate them all comes in a single hardware appliance.

Mark Carlson, CEO of SimpleFeed, said in a phone call from the Summit that Intel’s global sales channels plan to target small- and medium-sized businesses with SuiteTwo. He quipped that, for Intel, “$500 million is a medium-sized business.”

Carlson told me their involvement with SuiteTwo began with a shadowy call from Intel last winter, to gauge his firm’s interest in the project. Through May and June, the project jelled into the SuiteTwo concept as the different companies continued talks and development through the summer.

“The last few weeks have been frantic,” Carlson said, with some relief evident in his voice.

Sales should begin in the first quarter of 2007. The launch price had been a secret (and is subject to change), but according to Carlson someone blurted out it would be $175 per user for SuiteTwo.

—

I have been keeping up with my Feed Reading lately and posting the best stuff to my link blog. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t reading as many feeds lately because it just wasn’t fun.

It’s interesting. For the past few years I’ve used NewsGator inside of Outlook. I fought with Dave Winer about news aggregators for all of that time. He said that a “river” style of news aggregator is a lot nicer than a three-pane folder aggregator, like what NewsGator has.

Now, yeah, NewsGator has a river view too, but I never found it satisfying. I’m not sure why Google’s Reader caught my eye, but now that it has it’s just so much easier to read thousands of posts and sift through them looking for good stuff.

I don’t read separate feeds anymore. I just read everything in one long continuous scrolling Window. By the way, it’s a LOT faster on Firefox 2 than in IE 7.

Partly it’s the cross-platform thing. By using Google Reader I don’t need to worry about getting my feeds loaded into the various computers I use. In fact, I can just sit down at your computer and start reading feeds (something I’ve actually done a lot more often than I’d like to admit).

My readers have been suggesting I go back and give Bloglines and Newsgator online (among others) another chance. Over the past week I have and I just don’t like those as much as I like the Google Reader.

What about you? Have you tried Google Reader? Why do you stick with the aggregator you’re on, if you haven’t switched? Why did you switch to Google Reader if you have?

ASIDE: our PPT slides from our Blog Business Summit presentation are now up, if you wanna download them and take a look.

Some good points -

I don’t really open more than about 10 tabs at max and thus the individual close button is a boon.

I love the realtime spell check.

The seamless integration of Feeds is another kick-ass feature. You can customize it to your choice of application to handle the Feeds. For instance, I’ve defaulted it to Newsgator Online which syncs with NetNewsWire for the Mac and FeedDemon for Windows.

There’s no doubt that subscribing to someone’s blog or website via RSS in order to automatically receive their content each time their site is updated is a convenient way to stay on top of the latest information.

No manually going to a site to check if there is new stuff.

Instead, it comes to you automatically in your RSS aggregator, either directly in your computer or to your preferred online service (or both if you use the latest version of FeedDemon).

Recently I added some additional RSS subscription options to this blog, something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. What that means is that if you use services like Bloglines, NewsGator, My Yahoo, My AOL, etc, you can now subscribe to this blog’s RSS feed through your preferred service.

But some people like to receive blog updates via email. A long-established service for that is FeedBlitz. I’ve never offered that option (can’t think why not, actually) even though two readers recently told me they would prefer to get my posts in their inboxes.

Well, now you can subscribe by email.

RSS feed management company FeedBurner has just introduced a useful new service where you can subscribe to blog posts by email. I’ve enabled that service on this blog.

One of the great things about using FeedBurner to manage your subscriptions is that every different way you offer people to get your content – whether it’s via RSS or via email – that content comes from the same source: the core RSS feed that FeedBurner manages. So no juggling multiple RSS feeds which makes it very difficult indeed to see how many subscribers you actually have, an issue I had with my old blog.

And one thing about the new FeedBurner service – if you already have FeedBlitz or Squeet enabled via FeedBurner, you’ll need to de-activate it in order to even see the FeedBurner email option in the Publicize’ tab in your feed account settings.

Whichever subscription option you choose, thanks for subscribing.

[Edit] Naturally, I tried out the FB email service for myself and signed up to get my own posts by email. Mostly to see that it works ok.

It does, very nicely. HTML or plain-text options. I have HTML so see nice formatting plus images. I do like the email address it comes from: emailenfuego.net.’ Heh! Spanish for email on fire’

Another good touch – in the footer of the email, you see this:

Nice encouragement to sign up for the RSS subscription!

Add to DiggThis | Yahoo!

Fortune has a really cool series called “How I Work.” They interviewed an array of business leaders and celebrities about the tools and techniques they use to manage their day.

I thought it would be really cool if bloggers did the same. I’m more interested in how you manage your workload and the tools you use than I am in Bill Gates. Here’s my crack at it. File yours under the Technorati tag .

I work Web 2.0 style across multiple Macs and PCs. Over the past two years I have shifted most of my work off the desktop and onto the cloud. I run far fewer applications this year than I did last. I keep either Entourage or Outlook running for my corporate mail. I use PowerPoint a lot and ecto or Marsedit for blogging. Beyond these apps, pretty much everything else I run in either Firefox or Camino across multiple tabs. I keep a copy of Firefox on a one gigabyte USB key with my bookmarks and cookies so that I can work from anywhere I get my hands on a computer.

In my browser I usually keep some combination of the following sites open in browser tabs…

Box.net for storage
Backpack for tracking actions/GTD
Gmail for personal/blog mail
Writely for my daybook
Bloglines or Newsgator Online for my feeds
Meebo for IM
Google for searching
Google Bookmarks for bookmarks
Popurls for meme and news tracking (a recent addition)

Our corporate intranet

Outlook Web Access for corporate mail/calendar/addresses (when I am not in my office)

When I am at my computer I use Backpack to track my projects and next actions. I add and subtract things to the list as they come up. I keep Writely open for notes. I start a new file each week. When I am on calls I enter my notes in Writely because I know that I can always find the information I need later because the database is completely searchable from every computer I use.

On an average weekday I get anywhere from 150 – 200 emails. They are split equally between Gmail and my corporate email accounts. I have a Blackberry that receives email from both accounts. I also use my Blackberry to check RSS feeds and to update my lists in Backpack. Writely doesn’t have a mobile version yet so I can’t access my notes on the go. However, they have an email-to-document feature which I use a lot. I write up notes after meetings and email them into Writely. I go over these notes when I conduct my GTD Weekly Review. Other than a thin Moleskine Cahier notebook, which I use in meetings, I don’t use paper.

Over the past two years I have made blogging part of my regular day. You can read how I do this on Debbie Weil’s blog. It’s a critical part of my day. The feedback I get from readers as well as the information I get from RSS feeds keeps me smart about where media and marketing are going. This helps me do my part in helping Edelman stay one step ahead of the curve. My day stretches from 4:30 or 5 a.m. until as late as 8 or 9 p.m. split between the office, at home and in transit.

Information overload is at times a challenge, but I enjoy it. I subscribe to a few hundred RSS feeds and I get all of my news online. I don’t read a newspaper or watch TV. The Web is my window onto the world for both business and personal information and communication.

Frank Gruber, the mind behind the Somewhat Frank blog, subjected nine web-based RSS feed readers to a comparison and blogged about the best on TechCrunch.

“Syndication is undoubtedly the heartbeat of the web 2.0 movement,” Gruber began by way of introduction for his substantial post on TechCrunch about online feed readers. A feed reader does the heavy lifting for a user, by scouring sites and collecting all the new items in feeds in the reader.

Gruber did not include MyYahoo in his assessment, though he called it the “most widely used web-based reader.” Online virtual desktops and portals like NetVibes and Live.com also did not fall under his purview. Nine purely online feed readers did, as listed here:

• Attensa Online
• Bloglines
• FeedLounge
• Google Reader
• Gritwire
• News Alloy
• NewsGator Online
• Pluck Web Edition
• Rojo

Gruber found Google Reader and FeedLounge had the fastest average times per feed when loading five feeds. He gave Rojo credit for its “Mojo” system where users can rate the items being displayed. Rojo and Gritwire received special mention for their contacts features, which allow for the “social aspect” of sharing information of interest with others.

Pluck’s FeedFinder and Rojo’s recommendations feature offer users the chance to discover new feeds of interest.

Ultimately, Gruber acknowledged that out of this admittedly small slice of the online feed reader market, FeedLounge and Google Reader won out on performance, while Bloglines and Rojo offered the broadest feature sets.

A chart he created comparing several features among the readers will be a living document, which he plans to update depending on added information about these feed readers. But none of them managed to outperform “the speed and agility of the best desktop based readers like NetNewsWire and FeedDemon,” Gruber wrote.
