It was recently revealed that the pool for IPv4 addresses had been depleted, meaning that the protocol for the Internet as we know it has been used up, and the transition to the next-generation IPv6 is beginning.

Drew Meyer, Senior Director of Marketing for Networking product vendor Netgear shared some thoughts on the transition with WebProNews.

"It’s a big deal for companies of all sizes because it is a fundamental change in the way the Internet works, but it is also a very subtle transition for most users," says Meyer. "Small businesses that keep older networking hardware in service longer may find they need to upgrade – but only once their networks break down. Channel partners play a key role in educating small and midsized customers."

On what kinds of techniques businesses can embrace while they gear up for the switch to IPv6, Meyer says, "The old and the new (IPv4 and IPv6) will coexist in most networks. Modern servers and software have provisions for dual mode support, but older equipment may require replacement since it cannot support the latest software patches and firmware upgrades. We expect this to happen invisibly as network equipment is refreshed driven by other solutions, like virtualization or mobile access."

"We see it as a side benefit of modernizing midmarket networks and have plans for it across our entire product line of managed, smart and unmanaged switches," he adds.

"Developing markets like China and new applications like mobile devices and home automation demand more Internet connectivity than ever before, so first movers are positioned to become the new leaders of the next generation Internet," he says. "Winners offer simple ways for smaller companies to adopt, and losers will be those vendors who do not educate their channels and end users on the availability of the new function. Midmarket customers purchasing reliable, affordable and simple solutions will be automatically prepared for the IPv6 transition."

World IPv6 Day has been set for June 8. On that day, major web properties like Google, Facebook, and Yahoo will join content delivery networks like Akamai and Limelight Networks for a 24-hour global trial of the new protocol.

Internet video continues to remain popular but what technology are people using to view the content? A new survey from ABI Research explores that question.

The survey of online consumers found that 12 percent had purchased some form of video content delivered over the Internet. Out of those, the majority (71%) watched video on their PCs, while 16 percent watched it on a TV using a burned DVD. Another 8 percent watched it using a game console.

ABI Research director Michael Wolf said, "Over the next few years new solutions from the likes of Apple, Netgear, and Sony will help cross this divide, making a la carte video download and viewing much easier."

"That doesn’t mean this transition will be an easy one: factors such as video quality, pricing of content, and technical glitches will persist for some time."

ABI predicts that out of all the options to watch online video that game consoles will lead in total revenue. The reason for this is that game consoles are close to the TV, have large hard drives, and a high penetration of online services among gamers.

Wolf concludes, "ABI Research believes that while Internet video delivery services for TV playback such as gaming consoles are only beginning to see public adoption, these devices, as well as products such as Apple TV, will ultimately create significant pay-content revenue opportunities if consumer platform vendors can provide easy-to-use solutions with good quality and large libraries, while offering attractive pricing options, whether subscription, download-to-own, or rental."

NETGEAR announced the availability of its RangeMax family of wireless networking products.

NETGEAR announced the availability of its RangeMax family of wireless networking products.

Based on Video54′s patent-pending BeamFlex technology, NETGEAR’s RangeMax Wireless router (WPN824) uses advanced Smart MIMO technology to eliminate dead spots and take consumers farther than they’ve gone wirelessly before. Its distinctive design, complete with blue LED’s that light-up to reflect changing wireless conditions, offers a unique style to complement the home.

Combining the benefits of MIMO with the BeamFlex smart antenna technology pioneered by Video54, the RangeMax Wireless Router is the first in the industry to employ an intelligent array of seven internal antennas that constantly and dynamically surveys the network environment for wireless interference and physical barriers. The router selects from among 127 possible antenna combinations on-the-fly to deliver the fastest connection and longest ranges between the router and clients. Recent tests conducted by VeriTest Labs, the testing division of Lionbridge, reported that in an environment designed to replicate real world usage, the NETGEAR RangeMax Router delivered approximately 45 percent more range and up to 20 percent more speed than the competing MIMO product offerings tested.

While the RangeMax Wireless Router is optimized for use with the RangeMax Wireless PC Card (WPN511), RangeMax Wireless PCI Adapter (WPN311), and RangeMax Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter (WPN111) to deliver up to 10 times the coverage and speed of standard 802.11g-based solutions, it is fully compatible with existing 802.11b/g and SuperG products, and provides performance increases of up to 50 percent for existing 802.11g clients including notebook computers with integrated wireless networking capabilities and Intel Centrino- based systems.

“Our RangeMax product family utilizes an intelligent antenna overlay technology that enables our router to deliver superior coverage, speed and adaptability to changing wireless environments. It seamlessly integrates into existing 802.11b/g environments to provide the reliable, high-performance network infrastructure required to support an expanding array of networked consumer devices,” explained Vivek Pathela, NETGEAR Senior Director of Product Marketing — Consumer Products. “The RangeMax Wireless Router is the ideal solution for bandwidth-intensive consumer applications because it is uniquely able to dynamically optimize network connections by adapting on-the-fly to changes in the RF (Radio Frequency) environment — such as interference introduced to the environment by turning on a microwave oven or using a 2.4GHz cordless phone.”

“We’re seeing great enthusiasm and anticipation in the market for the release of the NETGEAR RangeMax product family which will be the first to implement our innovative BeamFlex technology,” stated Selina Lo, CEO of Video54. “Together with NETGEAR, we’re able to deliver a best-in-class, standards-based MIMO implementation that not only outperforms similar products in an 802.11 network but is far more affordable. More importantly, by implementing MIMO techniques on a standards-compliant platform, RangeMax brings the performance enhancing benefits of MIMO technology to existing wireless infrastructures and enhances the speeds and range of installed 802.11b/g devices and clients.”
