Developers who work in C or C++ can use the NetBeans integrated developer environment to build applications on Windows, Linux, and Solaris.

NetBeans made the C/C++ Pack available as an open source project.

The development pack replaces the cpp and cpplite modules that C developers would have used previously.

The development team plans to update the project about once a month.

“While the updates don’t have all of the functionality we’ll have when we release, they definitely have enough functionality for many uses,” they noted.

This IDE provides language-aware features in code completion and folding, and syntax highlighting.

Developers can import existing makefiles into the editor and work on those C/C++ projects from there.

A makefile wizard in the IDE helps developers bring in the already-created makefile. Users can specify compiler, pre-processor definitions, compile-time options, and define and manage targets/configurations.

A class browser is part of the environment, but a debugger is not yet, though the project noted that it is coming soon.

Since the editor has been built in pure Java, developers should have no problem getting to work on the three OS platforms already qualified by the project for it.

The project team did make an observation about compilers, and said, “The bulk of the testing has occurred with the compilers in the GNU Compiler Collection.” They are soliciting feedback on usage of the editor with other compilers, and plan to formally support more of them in the future.

The Java DB from the Apache Derby Project, and GroupLayout from the NetBeans GUI Builder, will be part of the Java SE 6 Development Kit.

Visual development of Swing applications comes to the JDK, Sun Microsystems revealed along with other news about Java SE 6. Downloads of the second beta release of the Java SE 6 may be found online.

Form construction can be accomplished more rapidly through the use of the GroupLayout from Project Matisse in NetBeans. Sun said this would make “the design of a Java technology GUI as simple as using a WYSIWYG drawing program,” without needing to know the underlying Swing technology.

The Java DB, Sun’s supported distribution of Apache Derby, will be part of the weekly Mustang builds of Java SE 6. The 2MB Java-based database is fully transactional. Sun noted it can be embedded directly into a Java application, or used in client/server mode.

Java will receive more exposure on hardware as a pair of Chinese technology powers have agreed to distribute the Java Runtime Environment on their OEM hardware. Founder Technology Group and Lenovo both inked licensing agreements that should have the JRE on their desktop and laptop machines by the third quarter of 2006.

Other PC OEMs that wish to license the JRE may do so online. Sun has established an online application for those manufacturers to apply for JRE licensing.

A final release of Java SE 6 is on track for the fall of 2006.

The 2006 version of the JavaOne Conference finished its run with a number of Calls to Action aimed at Java developers.

As about 14,000 attendees departed this year’s JavaOne Conference, they were encouraged to join projects and get involved with open source efforts.

With around 5 million Java developers around the globe, the proponents of JavaOne suggested the community join the Java Community Process Program, the Sun Developer Network, and also the Java Net collaboration site.

They also would like to see more Java developers in the NetBeans community trying out projects like Profiler, Mobility, and Matisse. Those and the Sun Java Studio Creator represent just a few of the Java projects in the open source community.

The conference wrapup article by Jon Byous also summarized sessions from some of the major tech firms supporting Java:

BEA’s general session included their Blended Strategy approach to enterprise development and new opportunities in Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and EJB 3.0.

Oracle’s general session told attendees about key technologies they see as vital to the Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm: JavaServer Faces (JSF) for building user interfaces; Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0 (EJB 3.0) for building business logic; and Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) for mapping business process flow. They also talked tools and offerings, pledging to provide a variety of free tool offerings.

The IBM general session showed us ways to hit projected software delivery dates with precision and quality the Eclipse way.

Attendees at the Motorola general session learned of Motorola’s new MOTODEV developer program, designed to build a broad business and developer ecosystem that will speed the pace of innovation while creating new business channels and revenue streams. They really want to make it easer for you to make better, broadly compatible mobile applications and more money from them.

After they get home, attendees who wish to check out the Presentation PDFs can do so online. For instance, the Java Persistence API session presented by Sun and Oracle may be downloaded in its 65-page full-color glory.

Sessions held later in the conference that are not available yet for download, and will be available, should be online by mid-June.
