President Obama is going to spend a good part of 2012 on the campaign trail, and every speech he makes at every rally he stages needs music. Campaign music is always meticulously selected for both awesomeness and message and whether it succeeds (think Clinton’s “Don’t Stop” thinkin’ about tomorrow) or fails (think Reagan’s misinterpretation of “Born in the USA), the music choices that campaigns make always leave a lasting impression.

With that, the Obama campaign has made his 2012 playlist public on Spotify so that you can save it and share it with your Spotify pals.

The playlist features “picks by the campaign staff – including a few of President Obama’s favorites.” And it seems to stretch across a few musical genres – country, soul, indie rock, folk. Some of the songs’ titles seem to be on-message, such as Bruce Springsteen’s “We Take Care of our Own” and REO Speedwagon’s “Roll With The Changes.”

Indie rockers Arcade Fire make an appearance on the playlist with their track “We Used To Wait” from last year’s album The Suburbs. Country is well represented with tracks from Sugarland, Montgomery Gentry, and Dierks Bentley.

As you might expect, Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” is one of the 28 songs on the list. I’m sure you remember the significance of that one:

This writer is particularly happy to see some E.L.O. love on the mix, as the campaign included the timeless classic “Mr. Blue Sky.”

Of course, none of the tracks were specifically written for a political campaign – but the lyrics of many are strategic to the Obama campaign. Although originally written with a lover in mind, U2′s “Even Better Than The Real Thing” starts out by saying “Give me one more chance, and you’ll be satisfied.”

In other campaign music news, Newt Gingrich was recently sued by the band Survivor for his use of their famous song “Eye of the Tiger” at his rallies.

Women love a man with a deep voice; women love a man that can sing. So, whomever possesses the ability to sing the world’s lowest note should be a total chick magnet, right?

Record label Decca has begun their search for the person that can sing the world’s lowest bass notes. The search will stretch across the globe spanning from the lowest parts of the south to the highest peaks of the Alps. The purpose of the search is to find the right person for a particularly difficult choral session; in search of bass: the final frontier.

The writer of Christmas hit “Wherever You Go”, has composed a new piece that features a note, astonishingly, six (6) semitiones below the deepest note ever written for a choir. J.D. Sumner is a previous world record holder for the lowest note ever sung. He can be seen in the video below showcasing his extreme lows.

The label has fully progressed into the public, placing ads for singers to audition. Paul Mealor, the composer of the featured work, is well known for his bass-featuring pieces, but remarkably he has surpassed previous works with his new piece, stretching far down to the low E note, which is three octaves below middle C for all you music theorists and composers out there.

The low E note is, in fact, so low that it’s thought to have never been sung before; E is two semitones below F# (F sharp). The lowest note thought to ever be included in a work is Bb (B flat); Rachimaniov’s Vespers. Mealor had this to say about his new piece:

“My setting of De Profundis calls for a rich and powerful voice.”

He went on to say:

“A voice that can not only touch the heart with its sincerity and truth, but also make every fabric of the human body resonate as it plunges into the very lowest parts of the vocal spectrum.”

The ads for the auditions will soon appear in international publications and on the internet. The ads will probe the question “Low low can you go? How deep can you sing?”

Those wishing to audition can send demo tapes or upload a file to www.howlowwillyougo.com

Ahead of her Super Bowl halftime show appearance, Madonna has premiered her new music video on YouTube, which has obviously replaced MTV as the place where music fans turn to watch videos.

The video is for the song Give Me All Your Luvin’ (Feat. M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj).

Not be confused with ZZ Top’s Gimme All Your Lovin’:

Rumor has it that the halftime show appearance will include appearances from Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., Cee Lo and LMFAO.

Madonna, being the former queen of MTV music videos is embracing YouTube and Google all the way. She is also on Google+, where she will be providing news and behind-the-scenes photos leading up to the Super Bowl, according to Google.

About a week ago, I wrote an article about Julia Nunes, who was able to snag a spot on Conan. This lead to me researching her YouTube page, and seeing that it had received over 50 million page views and 210,000+ subscribers. Now, she has a new album coming out in February, titled “Settle Down”.

Here’s one of the songs on the album – “Stay Awake”

Nunes was kind enough to take a bit of time from her busy schedule and answer some questions about her Conan experience, her new album, and explained the history of her ukele enthusiasts.

First, let me start off by saying congrats for getting a spot on Conan. What was that experience like, and how was it to meet the famous host who’s had the likes of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and Mr. T on his program?

Thank you! It was awesome and scary and excellent. Conan is super nice and we got to watch the rehearsal where he sets up all the bits and he’s just always as funny as he seems on air.

How did it get setup, did you call Conan’s people or did his people call yours?

There are a lot of calls involved, back and forth to make sure that all the ducks are in a row.

You’ve had the YouTube channel since 2006. Did your aspirations of being a musician lead to you creating the channel or did you just make it at first and then use it as a way to share your music with the world?

I started making videos my freshman year of college because I’d just been ripped away from all of my high school friends and we’d always played music together. I sent them whatever I was working on via YouTube hoping that it’d be a little more private than Facebook. I had no idea what I was getting myself in to.

How long did it take before you started to know you were becoming a hit on YouTube?

I had a pretty strong following of about 1,000 ukulele enthusiasts. They had all found me because back then you could search “ukulele” and only yield a few things. One day I decided to make one of my multi layered videos for the song “Into The Sunshine.” The next day I was on the front page of youtube and jumped form 1,000 subscribers to 10,000. It’s kind of been a steady rise form there.

You’ve been releasing albums since 2007, can you compare the experience of that to simply sitting down in front a camera and performing? Are there particular aspects of album making that you enjoy?

I like being able to have drums in the studio. I can’t play drums, nor do I have room for them in my apartment. So while making the album I really got to hear what they sound like with full instrumentation which is awesome. For my videos, I’m usually making due with pots and pans.

With ‘Settle Down’ which releases this month; what was working on this album like compared to your previous works?

Every project is different, especially because you’re usually working with a new group of people, in a brand new environment. This time around we were in a very small studio in the middle of summer so I guess the biggest difference this time was that I was very very sweaty.

What are your aspirations moving forward for both your music and YouTube channel?

I’d like to continue making video’s in the style that I always made them as well as expand my repertoire to make more cinematic videos, more like the video for “Stay Awake” (see above)

I read the story about the name of your channel “jaaaaaaa”, how you did this randomly just holding down j and a, the first and last letters of your name. Any plans for a self titled channel album?

(laughter) Not in the near future, no. Which is funny because in german “ja” means “yes”

If Julia has taught us anything, it’s that playing the ukelele can only lead to good things. Just be sure you can play it well enough.

Rovio boss Mikael Hed said that piracy equals exposure. Music legend Neil Young couldn’t agree more.

At the Dive Into Media conference today, Neil Young spoke on music piracy and music quality. He detailed his solution to audio quality and his relationship with Steve Jobs.

Speaking first on the MP3 format, Young said that digital formats are convenient, but they sound lousy. He said that his goal is to “rescue the art form that I’ve been practicing for the past 50 years.” He blames the digital age for the degradation of music quality.

Modern digital formats sound great on my phone and I have no problem with it. Young, however, rightly points out that the digital encoding only captures a small percent of the musical data in a master recording.

Young doesn’t hate digital formats, far from it. He just feels that the “digital age” has caused people to choose between quality and convenience. “They shouldn’t have to make that choice,” Young said.

The solution is hardware that can play audio files that preserve more of the data present in the original recordings according to Young. He isn’t making that solution though. He’s leaving the heavy lifting to “some rich guy” like Steve Jobs.

Speaking of Jobs, Young says that he was a “pioneer of digital music, and his legacy is tremendous.” He says that Jobs listened to vinyl at home after a day’s work. If Jobs were to live long enough as Young has, he’s sure that Jobs would have found a solution.

He then moved onto record companies and whether or not they’re obsolete:

“What I like about record companies is that they present and nurture artists. That doesn’t exist on iTunes, it doesn’t exist on Amazon. That’s what a record company does, and that’s why I like my record company. People look at record companies like they’re obsolete, but there’s a lot of soul in there — a lot of people who care about music, and that’s very important.”

He then said that artists that complain about record companies should go it alone and become indie artists.

At the end of the talk, he tackled the sensitive issue of piracy:

“Piracy is new radio. That’s how music gets around.”

Did you hear? Facebook is popular. So popular in fact that they may be going public to the tune of $100 billion dollars. That’s not the exciting news though.

Billboard Editorial Director Bill Werde recently interviewed Dan Rose, VP of Partnerships for Facebook. Out of the interview came the tidbit that over 5 billion songs have been shared on Facebook since last year’s f8 conference according to The Next Web.

OK, I lied. The IPO is the exciting news. During the interview, Werde asked Rose an interesting question:

“Does the [new group of potential millionaires] distract from the work being done in the company?”

It’s a fair question and a good one to boot. The prospect of going public and those in the Zuckerberg empire becoming filthy rich definitely poses the risk that they may become lazy with the work they are doing. We’ve seen it happen before and it will surely happen again. Will it happen to Facebook though?

Rose batted away any perception that Facebook’s focus would change once they all start swimming in gold coins like Scrooge McDuck. Having Zuckerberg as the CEO of the company has helped the company maintain their focus according to Rose.

“Mark is still a very young guy and he’s going to run the company for a long time. He is really, truly one of the most mission-driven people I’ve ever met in my life.”

Rose may work for Facebook, but he seems to have a sincere faith in the company. If the company maintains its focus, it very well could become one of the largest companies on earth after going public.

What do you think? Will Facebook lose sight of its mission after going public? Or will it remain the top contender for years to come? Let us know in the comments.

A ukelele, a webcam and mic, all coupled with a YouTube account; these are the tools utilized by Julia Nunes. They’ve helped her reach nearly 50 million views on YouTube, with 209,777 subscribers.

When you generate this kind of buzz, one of two things can happen. You can fall into internet legend obscurity, as seen on South Park. However, sometimes the formula works and YouTube can catapult people into stardom. Nunes is hoping for the latter.

She was featured on Conan, playing a song from her debut album ‘Settle Down’, which comes out February 28th.

SoundCloud announced that it has hit the 10 million user milestone. That’s registered users, by the way. You don’t have to be registered to listen to sounds. Over 7 million of those users have come over the past year.

It looks like mobile has been a pretty big factor. While a spokesperson for the company tells us it isn’t breaking out the iPhone vs. Android app numbers yet, the company does say that its mobile apps have been downloaded over 5 million times.

Furthermore, over 10,000 apps are being developed on SoundCloud’s open platform. Recent additions include integrations with pro music creation software Pro Tools and Cakewalk.

“As we continue to work hard to innovate on our platform and API, it’s the support and creativity of our community that motivate and inspire us every day,” says co-founder and CTO Eric Wahlforss.

CEO Alexander Ljung adds, “When Eric and I started SoundCloud, we had the vision of enabling people to create and share sound more easily and collaboratively. Today 10 million people are recognizing that vision and it makes us extremely proud and encouraged that people are supporting our mission to unmute the web.”

To celebrate the milestone, SoundCloud has created a new SoundCloud Labs project called Story Wheel, which enables users to record a narrative around a series of images “to tell a personal story”.

You can see an example from Ljung and Wahlforss here.

“New projects like ‘Story Wheel’ demonstrate how placing sound as the central component of an online experience can be incredibly powerful,” says Wahlforss.

The company points out that SoundCloud is about much more than music, noting that journalists, bloggers, publishers and educational institutions are also among those taking advantage.

Earlier this month, SoundCloud announced that it has raised an undisclosed amount of funding led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, which the company says will allow SoundCloud to continue to expand more rapidly.
