Billy Clay Payne, Jr. and Billie Jean Hayworth were murdered last month after deleting Jenelle Potter from their Facebook profile. Marvin Enoch Potter Jr. and Jamie Lynn Curd have been charged with the crimes.

Mike Reece, a Johnson County Sheriff comments on the incident:

“It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen,”

“Once you’ve crossed her, you’ve crossed her father (Enoch Potter, Jr. ) too,”

The Sheriff reports that both victims were shot through the head and that Mr. Payne had his throat cut. The couple was found dead with their eight month old baby laying unharmed in the mothers arms.

So far, no charges have been place on Jenelle, but The sheriff remarks that this is not the first time she has had problems regarding Facebook. Several harassment charges were filed against her in the past relating to her activity on Facebook.

RO Smith, Curd’s attorney says:

” [it's] safe to say there’s more to it than the Facebook problem, it appears.”

Trust is a hard thing earn and give and that’s just a thing one woman could not give to her sister’s new beau who was, in her suspicion, a little different, weird if you will.

She went home to google her hometown; what she found chilled her blood and confirmed her suspicion. A photo appeared on the screen, a photo of a convicted killer along with details of his horrendous acts. She was, needless to say, shrouded in fear.

One of the country’s most sadistic killers had been released from prison after serving 20 years for violently bashing in the head of a former girlfriend’s son, in front of the other children.

This man was going by a different name now, but the image depicted the very same man her sister was dating; there was no mistaking it. Another detail unknown to her sister, the man was on the child protection register.

Upon the truth of the matter, a family representative revealed that they “still felt betrayed by the system”. Lawyers at Firth, McAlpine and Scott said this about ex-convicts ability changing their names:

“The family was amazed that someone could change their name and just blend back into the community like he had.”

An investigation revealed that the man changed his name while behind bars by deed poll before 2008 when the law changed. Since then no one is allowed to change their names while on the child protection register unless they appeal to Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione. It’s not said how many have applied for a name change, but police reveal that a total of 5 changes have been permitted. A police spokesperson was quoted saying:

“These matters related to applications where the name change was to the name the person has been known by all of their life and under the name for which they were arrested and charged. However, their birth certificate records the name of their biological father.”

Surprisingly while the police had knowledge of the man’s new identity, they failed to inform the public as well as the family.

Upon release from prison the man moved to a halfway house, eventually he met his new girlfriend; gaining her trust, not revealing his dark secret; ashamed or not. She gave him a job and he soon integrated himself into their lives, eventually being introduced to the woman’s children.

After a return from vacation, the sister of the woman revealed everything to the police and now the man faces up to 5 years in jail for violating the Child Protection Offenders Registration Act for allegedly being within the presence of minors for the consecutive period of 14 days or more and not reporting his actions.

In a world dominated by hi-def talking heads speaking from the climate-controlled comforts of high rise office studios, it’s important to remember those who actually risk their lives in order to secure the news. Sometimes the profession of journalism includes an immeasurable cost: the lives of the reporters risking their safety to keep the rest of the world informed.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has the grim task of tracking the number of journalists and other media workers that are killed each year around the world. CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon explains the importance of keeping track of this gruesome information:

CPJ’s mission – grounded in international law – is to fight for the rights of all journalists to report the news freely, without fear of reprisal. Our list of journalists killed is a key advocacy tool in this struggle. We routinely use it to confront governments with their own record of indifference or ineptitude, as we’ve done recently in Pakistan, Mexico, and Russia.

Their data for 2011 was released earlier today and while it wasn’t the deadliest year on record it certainly wasn’t a low-risk one, either. CPJ provided an interactive graphic that details the fine statistics of the 43 journalists were killed throughout the world with 19 of them murdered.

From CPJ’s analysis:

CPJ’s survey identified significant changes in the nature of journalist fatalities. Sixteen journalists died while on dangerous assignments, many of them while covering the chaotic and violent confrontations between authorities and protesters during the uprisings that swept the Arab world. The victims included Hassan al-Wadhaf, a Yemeni cameraman shot by a sniper while covering antigovernment protests in Sana’a, and Ahmad Mohamed Mahmoud, an Egyptian reporter gunned down while filming a protest in Cairo. “Journalists working in this environment are in no less danger than war correspondents covering an armed conflict,” said Ahmed Tarek, a reporter for the Middle East News Agency who was assaulted by police while covering protests in Alexandria, Egypt. “The greatest danger journalists are facing today in post-revolution Arab countries is the targeting of journalists by political forces hostile to anyone who exposes them.”

For the second year in a row Pakistan topped the list of most dangerous places for journalists as 7 were killed while reporting from that country. With all that has happened in the Middle East year during the Arab Spring, it probably won’t surprise anyone that 7 out of the 10 deadliest countries for a reporter to be working are located in that region. The grisly violence directed to journalists wasn’t isolated only to that region, though, as the 4th deadliest place in the world for journalism was Mexico, most likely due to the surmounting violence associated with the Zetas drug cartel.

While CPJ keeps track of the death toll of journalists in the past year, this data does not include the journalists that were beaten and severely injured while in the line of duty. Including those statistics, journalism becomes mutates into an even more dangerous profession.

Online classified site Craigslist, like most of the internet, has to ability to be a force for good in the world. Say you need a new dresser for your bedroom and there’s someone in your vicinity that needs to get rid of a dresser to make room for their new baby. Bingo – you guys get together and help each other out. Awesome.

But Craigslist, like most of the internet, is also a place for scams, manipulation and other seedy activities. We’ve heard stories of jilted lovers trying to hire hitmen on the site as well as oblivious drug dealers trying to liquidate product. And of course let’s not forget about the infamous Craigslist Killer.

This unbelievable story begins on Craigslist and ends with two shallow graves in the woods. Hold on, everybody. This is a weird one.

In Caldwell, Ohio, a 16-year-old high school student and a 52-year-old Akron man have been arrested in conjunction with a shooting that occurred back on November 6th.

According to the shooting victim, a South Carolinian, he had come to Noble county Ohio in response to a Craigslist ad for a general labor job on a 688 acre cattle farm. He said that he was told he’d be living on the farm, and thus was instructed to bring all of his belongings with him. He reportedly met two men for breakfast in a nearby city and they set off together, supposedly for the farm.

The men eventually pulled over, explaining to the victim that they would have to take the rest of the journey on foot due to the impassable roads ahead. As they were walking through the woods, one of the men pulled a gun on the victim, who was able to deflect the barrel aimed at his head and begin running away. As he was fleeing, he was shot in the elbow.

The victim waited hours in the woods until he felt the coast was clear, and he eventually made it two miles to a residence where he was taken in. The authorities were then notified of the situation.

Authorities think that this was all part of bigger scheme that involved phony Craigslists ads. The suspects are thought to have placed the ads with the intention of getting unsuspecting workers out to their farm where they would rob them of all their possessions and kill them.

This is the working theory because shortly after the shooting incident, authorities found a shallow grave in woods nearby, which they think was meant for the South Carolina man. A day later, they found another shallow grave near the first – but this one was occupied.

It’s thought that the dead man could be a Florida man, who was reported missing by his twin sister after he also responded to a similar Craigslist ad. Autopsies have yet to determine this, but authorities suspect that there could be more victims. They don’t really know if this phony ad killing scheme is limited to these two, or extends to others. We don’t know much more right now because today a judge issued a gag order.

What have we learned here? Well, for one, that people are f*cking crazy.

I’m sure that once everything about this comes to light, the Lifetime movie is not far behind. I don’t know, can it be as compelling as a film about a med student that kills hookers he find on Craigslist escort ads? I don’t know – it’s a pretty sinister story.

Is Billy Baldwin available?

From time to time, we get a reminder of the true power of social media, and the fact that sometimes that power is used by evildoers. The latest example comes a CNN report about a Facebook "hit list".

According to CNN’s Arthur Brice, three teenagers in Columbia, who were on a 69-name hit list posted on Facebook, have been murdered in the past ten days. He reports:

The hit list on Facebook, which was posted August 17, gave the people named three days to leave the town of Puerto Asis or be executed, said Volmar Perez Ortiz, a federal official whose title is defender of the public.

Police at first thought the posting was a joke, Perez said in a statement issued Saturday. But the publication of a second list with 31 additional names led authorities to convene a special security meeting Friday, Perez said.

Brice has more details about the crimes.

The Facebook format used for the hit list is unclear, and the company did not respond to a request for comment.

This is not the first time we’ve seen social media abused, and it will almost certainly not be the last, but while a site like Facebook may provide a platform for threats, it’s important to keep in mind that it is only the platform, and a platform that is utilized much more often for good will (see the countless causes on the social network).

It’s simply a means of communication. This is another example of why social media sites should not be held accountable for the actions of users (a problem YouTube has struggled with). Would you hold a paper company or the post office responsible for a handwritten hit list sent through the mail?

Back in February a man named Wayne Forrester murdered his wife Emma in cold blood (and a cocaine and alcohol-fueled daze) by stabbing her in the head and neck with a kitchen knife and meat cleaver. The reason he did this he said, was because she changed her Facebook profile to "single" shortly after he moved out of their home.

Today, Forrester was sentenced to life in jail, and ordered to serve a minimum of 14 years. BBC News reports:

The day before the murder, he called her parents and complained about his wife’s Facebook entry which he said "made her look like a fool", the court heard.

In a statement to police Forrester said: "Emma and I had just split up. She forced me out.

"She then posted messages on an Internet website telling everyone she had left me and was looking to meet other men.

"I loved Emma and felt totally devastated and humiliated about what she had done to me."

"The whole incident seemed a blur. I felt I was watching somebody else attacking Emma," said Forrester according Mail Online.

This is one of the darkest stories involving social media that I have ever heard. It makes you wonder how many psychopaths are really out there reading profiles. It is mind-boggling how something as simple as a change in profile status could set off such a gruesome affair. Emma was the mother of two children.
