We brought you word last month that The Pirate Bay documentary – TPB AFK – would be launching sometime in early 2013. That day has finally come, and the film is now available to all those who want an inside look at the origins and continued operations of the most notorious site on the Internet.

The really interesting thing about TPB AFK is that the filmmakers are not only releasing the film for $10, but also releasing it for free via The Pirate Bay. It’s not like the filmmakers don’t want people to buy their film though. Instead, releasing the film for free ensures that more people watch it. Those viewers may even end up buying it if they like it.

So, how’s that going for them so far? In less than an hour, the $10 film has earned $21,641 according to the Web site. The majority of that has come from the 1,826 paid downloads thus far, but others have just contributed to the film through donations. The filmmakers are also selling pre-orders of the DVD for $23.

Of course, you may not want to pay $10 just yet to support a film you may not like. You also may not like the idea of downloading it via The Pirate Bay. For you, the filmmakers have also released it on YouTube in its entirety. Check it out:

The international poster for director Len Wiseman’s “Total Recall” remake ranks up there with some of the worst posters ever conceived. Nothing about the piece makes you excited for the movie. Unless, of course, poorly Photoshopped images crammed into one space is enough to separate you from your hard-earned money. My interest in the film continues to drop every time new promotional material is released, and this international poster isn’t helping matters any. I guess I shouldn’t judge a movie by its poster, but damn, that thing is ugly.

Unfamiliar with “Total Recall”? Then you probably need this synopsis:

For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid, even though he’s got a beautiful wife who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man as he finds himself on the run from the police.

“Total Recall” stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bokeem Woodbine, John Cho, and Bill Nighy. Oh, and a three-breasted alien. Can’t forget about her. Look for the film to arrive in North American theaters on August 3rd.

While we’re right smack dab in the middle of the summer movie season–one tent-pole release down (The Avengers) and two to go, (The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises). Nevertheless, with the second release of an albeit shorter trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Django Unchained has one perhaps looking past the summer with anticipation of the Christmas movie season.

The second teaser debuted last night during the BET Music Awards–seeing D’Angelo in the house is always a good thing–and while it’s shorter than the initial trailer, it doesn’t fail to stoke the fires of anticipation that much more. There are few new scenes as well, including the introduction of Samuel L. Jackson’s character, which is never a bad thing.

Yes, I know, you’re shocked that a Tarantino movie features Sam Jackson. Deal with it, because he looks pretty cool:

/Film reveals a little bit about Jackson’s role in the movie, one that has Jamie Foxx playing the lead:

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave.

Django Unchained is scheduled to hit the theaters on Christmas Day of this year (2012), which sounds like the perfect way to spend a Christmas evening.

Aaron Sorkin will be writing a screenplay for a Sony Picture’s biopic about Steve Jobs based on Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs. The studio made the announcement Tuesday.

This is not the indie film we have been talking about on webpronews, featuring Ashton Kutcher in the lead role, and Josh Gad as Steve Wozniak. (Both are impressive dopplegangers of their Apple counterparts.)

Unlike its indie counterpart, this version has major studio funding ( in Sony Pictures) and Author backing. This is one of those rare instances where we are going to see direct competition in studio and indie film productions. It will be interesting to see how these two approaches tackle the subject. At first glance you might assume that the indie film will be more emotionally charged, with the Sony Pictures version concentrating on the business life of Jobs. But Sorkin is known for driving story through emotionally charged dialog, so this one is up in the air.

My guess is that the indie version will be more introspective, while Sorkin’s version will depict Jobs friendships and clashes on his way to making Apple what it is today.

Alright, back to the Sorkin version. First a quick rundown of Sorkin’s screenplay and teleplay credentials (A Few Good Men, Malice, The American President, The Social Network, Moneyball, and the upcoming HBO series The Newsroom)). Impressive stuff, but Sorkin isn’t anywhere close to slowing down. Right now he is writing two screenplay adaptations, screenplays for The Newsroom, and making his Broadway librettist debut and motion picture directorial debut.

Sorkin won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Social Network. He has also acquired the motion picture rights to The Politician, by Andrew Young about the downfall of former Senator John Edwards. He will adapt the book for screen, make his directorial debut with the film, and produce. He is currently in production on the HBO series The Newsroom, which is scheduled to premiere on June 24, 2012. Sorkin will also return to the theater and make his Broadway debut as a librettist with the 2013-2014 production of Houdini. Based on the life of legendary magician Harry Houdini, the musical will star Hugh Jackman and will feature music and lyrics by 3 time Oscar and 4 time Grammy winner Stephen Schwartz.

Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired the rights to a lost interview with Steve Jobs. The interview will be coming to select theaters later this month, with a video release to come after.

In 1995 Steve Jobs was the head of NeXT Computers. He had been away from Apple for 10 years. Apple was struggling badly at the time, and late the following year they would acquire NeXT in an almost $2 million deal that brought Jobs back to the company he helped found. Jobs became a consultant for Apple in early 1997, and by July he had been named the company’s “iCEO” (the “i” standing for “interim”). Three years later the “i” was dropped and Jobs was named permanent CEO, a post he would hold until his death last October.

But in 1995, none of that had happened yet. Jobs was still the head of NeXT and principal owner of Pixar (which was preparing to put its first feature film, a little flick called Toy Story, in theaters). That year, Jobs sat down with Robert Cringely and gave a lengthy interview. In the interview Jobs discussed his early career, his struggles, and his vision for the future at length. While bits of the interview were incorporated into a TV special, much of it was not. The parts that were not included were thought lost. Recently, though, the entirety of the interview was rediscovered.

Magnolia Pictures, owned by the Wagner/Cuban Company, has acquired the U.S. rights for the interview. Following a successful series of screenings in Landmark theaters, the film will be released in select theaters on May 11th. Later in the summer it will be released on DVD and in electronic format. Check out the trailer below:

Additionally, another video on YouTube includes some of the footage that was included in the TV special. This includes a bit more of the interview than Magnolia’s trailer:

The buzz surrounding writer/director Rian Johnson’s upcoming sci-fi actioner “Looper” has been rather spectacular. There were actually teaser trailers for the teaser trailer, a concept that still boggles my mind. To be fair, the official teaser for the flick looks absolutely spectacular, particularly since it re-unites actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt with Johnson. As you may recall, the pair first worked together on the acclaimed 2005 high school mystery “Brick”, a film that, in my opinion, is one of the best modern-day noir tales currently on the market.

Since his excitement for the project simply cannot be contained, Johnson provided exclusive commentary on the trailer to the folks over at MTV. As you can tell, the director is easily just as jazzed about the project as the legions of fans who have been closely following he project since its inception.

Naturally, if you haven’t seen the clip, then this commentary will mean absolutely nothing to you. Before proceeding, why not take a second to peruse the trailer? It’s embedded below.

What really seems to set “Looper” apart from Johnson’s previous endeavors is the amount of action on-display. Sure, “Brick” and “The Brothers Bloom” had their fair share of explosions and macho theatrics, but there’s something special about the sort of stuff witnessed in the teaser for his latest effort.

“It was fun for me,” Johnson said regarding the film’s multiple action sequences. “You see flashes of a lot of action in the movie, and this is the first time I’ve been able to do it on that scale, which is really fun, especially working with a veteran like Bruce (Willis),” Johnson said. “Joe had a lot of fun working with Bruce on the action scenes. Bruce kind of showed us the ropes. It was pretty awesome.”

Regarding co-star Emily Blunt: She’s in there. Somewhere. Although it’s hard to spot her in the teaser, Johnson assures everyone that the British actress is, in fact, a part of the production.

“You see a quick clip of Emily Blunt, [but] there’s a whole sequence where she had to do some action work and she just kinda kicked ass. I’m excited for people to see it,” Johnson explained. “Emily really held her own when it was time to get out the shotgun and do some blasting.”

And, yes, I really want to see Emily Blunt wield a shotgun and do some serious damage. “Looper”, which also stars Jeff Daniels. Paul Dano, and Piper Perabo, opens in US theaters on September 28th, 2012.

This the new poster for the Wes Anderson flick Moonrise Kingdom. And surprise! It looks like every other Wes Anderson movie since The Royal Tenenbaums.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Wes Anderson is great. He just needs to stop making movies that all look alike. Maybe it’s just the posters. They could try releasing one that doesn’t include the entire cast staring meaningfully into the camera:

These two movies are exactly the same.

He even gets inanimate objects to stare meaningfully at the camera. How does he do it?

Moonrise Kingdom is set to premiere at Cannes in a few weeks. The new poster (in French) is part of the promotion.

Moonrise Kingdom is set on an Island off the coast of New England in the 60′s. A young boy and girl fall in love, and probably act quirky around each other. They run away together and the whole town goes searching for them.

My guess is it will be offbeat and bittersweet. I will alternate between loving it for the humor and hating it for trying so hard to be weird.

Despite being confined to a house in the UK, Julian Assange gets around. He has started work on a TV series, starred on The Simpsons and is even running in politics. It seems that the Wikileaks founder is now going to be the subject of a new movie – he just won’t be starring in it.

Network TEN, an Australian television station, has announced UNDERGROUND, a made for TV film that explores the early life of Assange. The network announced that they have secured Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under) and Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) to star in the movie alongside newcomer Alex Williams who will play a young Assange.

The film will be written and directed by AFI Award winning filmmaker Robert Connolly (Balibo). The film is not only about Assange as it explores the young group of hackers that Assange led during the late 1980s and early 1990s in Melbourne. Here’s the official synopsis from the filmmakers:

“UNDERGROUND is the story of teenage Julian’s early foray into computer hacking up until his first arrest. Set in suburban Melbourne in the late 1980s, UNDERGROUND delves into Assange’s turbulent upbringing with activist mother Christine as well as his first friendships and girlfriend. Forming a hacking circle, nicknamed ‘The International Subversives’, Assange begins breaking into the computer systems of the world’s most powerful organizations. In an era before the internet, the teenagers wage a technological war from their bedrooms, hacking into the US military from their home-jigged computers and parent’s phone lines. All the while they are being hunted by the Australian Federal Police led by Detective Ken Roberts who is charged with shutting them down.”

The studio tapped the aforementioned big names to play two of the pivotal roles in the film. Griffiths will play Assange’s mother while LaPaglia will be playing Detective Ken Roberts. The other actors in the film are Callan McAuliffe (The Great Gatsby), Laura Wheelwright (Animal Kingdom) and Jordan Raskopoulos (The Axis of Awesome).

The producer behind the film, Helen Bowden, gives a few more details about UNDERGROUND:

“Underground is the incredible, true story of a group of schoolboys in Melbourne who were hacking into the some of the biggest corporate and military organizations in the world, at the dawn of the internet age. It is a fascinating tale and we are very excited to be bringing it to the screen.”

Wikipedia confirms that the events being portrayed in the film actually happened. Spoiler alert: Assange was caught but never went to jail for his hacking exploits.

The film will begin shooting on April 16 and will continue for four weeks. That’s a ridiculously short time to film a movie, but I guess it has to be since the film is apparently going to air on Network TEN in the second half of 2012. It will be distributed worldwide by NBC Universal.

Do you think a film about the early life of Julian Assange would be good? Or would you rather see a film based on his work for Wikileaks? Let us know in the comments.
