Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger has become an advisor to the European Union. The singer, along with the chief executive officers of Apple, EMI, eBay, Fiat, Louis Vuitton and others, are meeting in Brussels today with the EU’s competition commissioner Neelie Kroes.

Jagger and his colleagues were appointed as unpaid consultants to help Kroes improve Europe’s online retailing market.

Jagger, 65, is expected to offer his advice on resolving problems involving downloads, music copyright and digital distribution online.

Kroes has said that there are still too many barriers within Europe surrounding the sale of music online and other multimedia content.

"The people of Europe were promised a union, a place without borders: but on the Internet they have not yet got it. Progress has been made; sometimes impressive, but it is not enough. As Competition Commissioner, I want to know why," said Kroes.

Last year EU regulators charged that Apple and other major music labels were breaching EU law by limiting consumer’s choices in buying music online

Until recently, Apple’s iTunes stores in Britain charged higher prices for music downloads than in the 15 EU countries, which use the euro.

A report from the Commission will be released later this year, hopefully offering European music fans some satisfaction.
