With the ample free time Redditors now have, many have turned to Twitter… to talk about Reddit.

And of course, the internet has decided that it’s perfect meme fodder.

The most indelible image from the video that went viral last week is definitely UC Davis Campus Police Lieutenant John Pike casually pepper spraying the protestors, who appear to be sitting on the ground in an absolutely peaceful manner. The few-second clip of the high-powered, red-orange spray covering the faces of the students has been played thousands of times across news outlets since last Friday.

Now, the image of Lt. Pike spraying the students has spawned its own Tumblr blog, the aptly titled Pepper Spraying Cop.

Little did we know that Pepper Spraying Cop has cracked down on so many famous moments in history!! This Tumblr will help document the long pepper spraying arm of this officer of the law!

And it does just that – by inserting the pepper spraying cop into various films, works of art, and famous photographs from history. Here are some of my favorite images from the blog:

Before I could think “That’s going to be a really popular t-shirt design pretty soon,” someone on reddit already made himself the t-shirt.

Memes pop up sometimes even when the source is decidedly less than funny. But they have a way of keeping things alive, and once you become a popular meme, the memory of you or your actions takes a long time to fade.

A number of memes that paid respect to Apple’s fallen quickly hit the web as well, and the images sub category of Reddit.com did a great job of cataloging these tributes, as well as capturing just how much the death of Steve Jobs resonated around the world.

To help keep the memory of Steve Jobs alive, we’ve collected some of the best memes that have popped up since the announcement. After looking at these, it’s pretty clear just how much Steve Jobs meant to his fans and the tech industry in general:

The downpour of Steve Jobs related memes and images just shows how much “pull” he had, especially with Internet users. Whether you are an Apple fan or not — I fall into the “not” category — you cannot deny the impact and the vision Jobs had for the tech industry as a whole. Hell, the iPhone single-handedly turned the Mac brand into a legitimate destination for video games, something the company still struggles with in regards to their home computers.

Just ask the Angry Birds creators, a group that openly acknowledges the role the iPhone played in making the game into the worldwide success it became.

Of course, Jobs’ footprint goes well, well beyond the success of the iPhone, but it’s also obvious just how crucial the device was to the overall success of Apple, which has skyrocketed into becoming the world’s most valuable brand.

All thanks to the genius of Steve Jobs.

If you’re having a hard time placing the video… it’s the one with the timeless line: I’m the Best Man. I Did It.

To give you brief rundown on the video, Eli Porter was a high school student at Chamblee High School in Georgia. He appeared on a student produced rap battle show entitled “Iron Mic“. The show saw Eli go up against a fellow student named Envy. After a comical battle between the two, a 2-1 decision was made and Envy was declared the winner. You can see the original video below.

There is no questioning the videos comedic value. But, after viewing you’re probably left with several questions you wished you had an answer for. Here are a few of mine:

1.) Is Eli truly the best, as he so claimed?
2.) Why was the host rubbing on the middle judge?
3.) What was that loooong pause all about?
4.) Why did Envy win the battle?
5.) What’s the deal with the heart vignette?

So many questions.

Well, we’re in luck. As our questions will finally be answered… all of them. A new documentary has came out, People’s Champion: Behind The Battle, which breaks down each moment of the four-and-a-half video Internet meme.

The documentary explores almost every possible angle… talking to teachers, the students running the cameras, the producers, the judges, and even Eli Porter himself. People’s Champion runs about thirty minutes, and is worth a watch.

Chinese internet users have taken a fairly egregious editing error and run with it. Late Sunday evening, an article was posted to the government website of Huili County, China. Huili county is part of the Sichuan Provine and is under the adminstration of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture.

The article, about upgrades to road conditions within the county, had a photo with three government officials on the scene who appear to be discussing the road conditions. The only problem is that the photo is so clearly photoshopped that it’s laughable. Apparently one user who spotted this error posted it to a Chinese internet forum and said:

I had nothing to do today so I visited the website for our county government. The headline story was about the upgrade for the road to the countryside. I looked at the photo and I almost coughed out half a liter of blood! Even a rank amateur like myself can tell that this was a PhotoShop job, and they had the nerve to put this on the home page!

So many people visited the government website that it was down for a brief period of time. Here’s the photo in question -

Chinese internet users took the photo began creating their own Photoshop masterpieces. I present to you, some winners of the Levitating Government Officials meme, courtesy of the Chinese site tt.mop.com -

When this began to go viral, the Huili County Government went into damage control mode. They set up an account on Weibo, which is China’s version of Twitter, just to address the Photoshop faux pas. On Weibo, they said that government officials did in fact go on site for the road inspection, but the original photos weren’t very clear. They also said that they learned a lesson from all this and thanked the internet community for their criticism.

They also posted what are supposed to be the original photos from the road inspection. Check them out for yourself but in my opinion, the argument could be made that they still look a bit off.

Photoshop disasters are some of the best things on the internet, hands down. If you have some time to kill, may I suggest browsing through the Top 20 Photoshop Disasters of 2010 as judged by PSDisasters.com.

If you are unfamiliar with the whole First World Problem thing, it is basically any statement that makes you seem out of touch with the real problems of the underprivileged. Urban dictionary says that they are “problems from living in a wealthy, industrialized nation that third worlders would probably roll their eyes at.”

For instance, “Dammit, my iPhone has the weakest battery life ever” would be a first world problem. It would be fun to think of these all day, but I’m sure most of you are familiar with First World Problems, so I’ll move on.

First World Problems have had an enduring internet presence for years. Maybe not as important on the interwebs as bacon, but close. First World Problems has a popular tumblr blog, a featured Reddit thread, and a Lamebook-like collection of social media First World Problems site called White Wine. The latter, of course, is a little less politically correct term for the trend.

However, the place where First World Problems is really a star is on Twitter. The hashtag #firstworldproblems will see about 20-40 new tweets roll in every few minutes.

And the best part about the trend is that it is perfect self-deprecating humor. People are aware that their lives are easy compared to the less fortunate. Sure, the joke is a little insensitive, but it’s always damn funny. Here are some of the current complaints from the advantaged masses –

The book, entitled “Ode To Happiness” features text by Keanu and illustrations by Alexandra Grant. It features reflective, often depressing and borderline self-pity phrases bolstered by inky illustrations. According to the book’s official site -

In the tradition of a classic “hurtin’ song,” the text externalizes what is typically an internal monologue, a spontaneous, melancholy incantation of near-hopelessness—and in so doing, subtly pokes fun at it. The images—beautifully realized in somber inky washes of black on white—reflect the dark and light, the pathos and humor of the text. Neither entirely earnest nor wholly ironic, the book is ultimately completed by the reader, who brings his or her own experience to its interpretation

In an interview with the Guardian, Keanu says his inspiration came from depressing music on the radio. He just started writing melancholy things down. These musings got in the hands of Grant, who drew the images, and the book was born.

Of course, the news of this project immediately engenders thoughts of Sad Keanu, the meme that took the interwebs by storm last summer. A brief history of the meme to follow:

Sometime in May, 2010, a photo was snapped of Keanu Reeves sitting alone on a bench, eating a sandwich. In the photo, Keanu seemed to be sad, morose, contemplative – whatever you want to call it. The photo became popular on Reddit, and then exploded for mememakers everywhere. Shopping the picture of him on the bench into various locales became huge and SadKeanu.com was born. Eventually the site was hit with a DMCA takedown notice for the use of the photo. Here are a couple of the best Sad Keanus out there -

The Sad Keanu Meme even inspired its own holiday – Cheer Up Keanu Day. Also titled Operation: Happy Reeves, the organizers encouraged people to send letters, gifts, messages and donations to cancer charities on June 15th to cheer up the sad actor. Here’s the accompanying video -

So it’s not surprising, then, that this new picture book feels like some sort of self-aware project, motivated by his enormously popular internet presence. But Keanu has said that this is not the case. From the interview with Guardian -

I can’t resist asking if Cheer Up Keanu Day was in any way responsible for Reeves’s current ebullience. Did he even know about it? “Oh, the internet deal,” he says vaguely. “It was brought to my attention. Yeah, it was funny. But no, the book predates that by a long time. We finished it in August 2009. It is hopefully, in a quiet and enjoyable way, transformative. The kind of thing that takes you from this one place to another – to look at yourself and, y’know, it can always be worse. I hate that sentence: of course it can always be worse!”

“Ode To Happiness” is not going to be very easy to find. There is an original pressing hand-bound 4,000 copy run, only available in the U.K. Amazon has a hardcover edition listed for $34.65, which they say will ship in 1 to 3 weeks. This usually means they have limited quantity.

Even if Keanu began this project before the infamous Sad Keanu photo was taken, there’s no denying that the meme will do wonders in promoting his new book.
