Google’s Marissa Mayer spoke at LeWeb in Paris, and reportedly said that Google+ will be launching check-in deals next week.

Google+ has had check-ins for months. They’re easier to access on the iPhone app than the Android app (interestingly enough), and Google has allowed you to check in using Latitude and Google Places for quite some time.

As you may know, Google also has Google Offers, its own deals product. It should be no surprise that Google continues to integrate its various products together. This will continue. It will certainly continue with Google Offers and Google+. It only makes sense that the two should be married.

Last week, Mike Blumenthal discovered a page discussing the check-in offers while perusing the Google Places Offer Help center. He quoted the following text from a page he found (which has since been removed):

If your customers have to visit your locations in order to do business with you, you can request that they check-in on Google+ in order to redeem your offers. They can choose to share the check-in publicly or with some of their circles, which helps spread the word about your business on Google+. They can also choose to keep their check-in private and still redeem an offer.

If your customers do not have to visit your location, for example if you serve homes or businesses by delivery or by callouts, you can keep this option off (set to “No”) and customers will not be asked to check-in when they redeem offers. We use the Service Areas and Location Settings setting on your listing to determine if you have a service area for offers that have already been created. When you create new offers, you can choose whether to allow a check-in during redemption.

This should provide businesses with yet another way to get more out of Google+. Google Offers itself still has quite a bit of expanding to to, in terms of spreading to more cities, but it has been expanding fairly steadily. This should continue for the foreseeable future.

Frederic Lardinois at Silicon Filter quotes Mayer as saying, “We think there are interesting ways we can monetize this, but also ways to help our users save money,” and says she indicated that Google is continuing work on other location products like Latitude.

Some have wondered if Latitude would disappear in favor of Google+. I’m still betting that it will go away eventually, at least as a standalone product, but it appears to be safe for now.

A man has been arrested and indicted on felony charges for using Twitter to harass and ultimately threaten top Google exec Marissa Mayer.

Mayer, VP of Maps and Location Services at Google, has become one of the most public faces of the company over the last several years. And now, according to the San Francisco Examiner, she is the target of a Twitter stalker.

According to court documents, 27-year-old Gregory Calvin King was arrested and has now been indicted on multiple counts of threats transmitted through interstate communication and harassing communications. The records indicate that King posted the threats on Twitter, addressed to one “M.M.”

King’s Twitter account, @gck764 is still active and shows over 20,000 tweets that mention @marissamayer. The tweets begin in November of 2010 and end on August 19th of 2011, the day that King was reportedly arrested.

The tweets are lewd, threatening, racist and most of the time make little to no sense. On multiple occasions King tweets at Mayer stuff about being “infected” – oftentimes blaming her for it.

(Warning: Most of the tweets are NSFW)

There is no word on whether Mayer reported the Twitter harassment to the authorities herself. It’s highly unlikely that she wouldn’t have noticed the tweets. I counted on one day, August 18th, King sent over 130 tweets at Mayer.

According to the FBI, “there is no known connection between King and the Google Executive.”

King is being held without bail awaiting a future court date at a time to be determined. If convicted, he faces up to 7 years in prison.

Google’s Marissa Mayer recently made the switch from the company’s VP of search products to focusing on the company’s geo and local products. In a recent interview with Media Beat, Mayer talked a bit about how the location-based service space has gotten off to a slow start (in terms of actual user adoption), as well as some reasons that Google already has some things to offer in Groupon’s territory (as you’re probably aware, Groupon recently turned down an acquisition offer from Google).

In terms of that slow location-based service adoption, Mayer said, "I think a lot of this means that it’s just very early. So it’s a very fast moving space. It’s very interesting. It’s one of the reasons I was really excited to move over and work in this area. But it’s just very early, and so I think that we are still experimenting with what are the incentives? What are the rewards? What’s the user value proposition? Why should I want to use a location-based service, especially on my phone, because the phone has basically unlocked all of this potential."

"So part of it is, as there’s more and more smartphones, I think there will be more and more people using location," she added. "We’re already seeing this with Google Maps for Mobile. But I think that as this progresses and people get more deals, offers, better offers, better value, better recommendations on where to go, start meeting up with friends…more users will adopt it."

When you think of location-based services, you might think more about things like Foursquare, Gowalla, SCVGR, etc. but this space is closely tied with the deals space, because ultimately this is going to be one of the main ways to attract users – businesses harnessing services like these to get people in the door.

When we think of deals these days, Groupon of course comes to mind. After news came out of Groupon denying Google’s bid, many of us wondered what Google’s next move would be. Would they try to acquire one of Groupon’s competitors? Would they simply build their own competitor? Mayer reminds us, however, that Google already has some things that could easily compete (and in some ways already do) in this space. It’s just a matter of the right integration and implementation of products.

"I think that when you look at our overall suite of services, especially around our advertising, we already have some things that are like this," Mayer said. "We have things like coupons and offer extension ads that allow merchants to basically make offers to our users. So we’re looking at how we can take that technology and put it to use, especially in the location space."

Mayer running the show in that area can’t be a bad thing. She’s got a pretty good track record in her old stomping ground (search). While she didn’t exactly rule out the possibility of other acquisitions in this area (in fact Google is likely to continue the acquisition spree of 2010 into the New Year), it’s clear that Google does in fact have a number of the pieces of the puzzle in its possession already. It’s just a matter of fitting them together in the right ways (much like in the social space).

Groupon CEO Andrew Mason recently called Groupon the savior for small businesses. Some businesses might have given this title to Google back when AdWords came out. While Google is not without its critics, there is no question that the company has already begun placing a great deal more emphasis on local, and is already the go-to place for finding local business info for a lot of users. It stands to reason that Google will be among the big players in both location-based services and deals. At the very least, it’s going to be hard to keep Google very far away from the conversation.

Then there’s that whole social layer thing.

Next to Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt, Marissa Mayer is Google’s best-known exec. Everyone who wishes to stay current will have to learn to associate a fresh title or two with her, though, as the former vice president of search products and user experience is taking on new responsibilities.

Reports indicate Mayer will now supervise Google’s products and services related to local markets and geolocation. What’s more, she’s supposed to join Google’s operating committee, which is an elite group of decision makers within the company.

That second detail makes this move look like a big win for Mayer, who was one of Google’s first 20 employees. The first fact, meanwhile, has some people speculating that the whole thing constitutes a demotion.

This change does mean someone else will begin to oversee Google’s search efforts, after all, and search remains the company’s hallmark. So it could be that Google’s trying to shake things up in the face of the Bing-Yahoo partnership.

Anyway, Udi Manber, who started at Google in 2006 after working at both Yahoo and Amazon, is the individual who will now direct the company’s search operations, according to Brian Womack.

It should be interesting to see if any new products or services are rolled out in an effort to stir up enthusiasm for these changes.

We’ll admit right here: you probably already have a very good idea what this article’s about. But if you don’t, please visit Google.com and take in whatever desert or field of flowers is on display as a background image. And now consider yourself up to speed on the fact that Google’s mimicking Bing.

That’s one hard-to-avoid conclusion, anyway. Another is that Google’s actually decided to drive searchers to use Bing (compare the "synthetic lollipops that hurt your eyes" image to the gorgeous picture of Belem Tower and see if you don’t feel the same way).

Google’s official explanation is that it’s trying to promote a certain feature, though. Marissa Mayer stated on the Official Google Blog, "Last week, we announced a new feature that lets you add a favorite photo or image to the background of your Google.com homepage. To provide you with an extra bit of inspiration, we’ve collaborated with several well-known artists, sculptors and photographers to create a gallery of background images you can use to personalize your Google homepage."

Then Mayer got to the point, adding, "We’ll be featuring these images as backgrounds on the Google homepage over the next 24 hours."

So this rather unfortunate experiment should be over soon. Not soon enough for many people, granted, but perhaps far too soon for the liking of executives at Microsoft.

UPDATE: Things have returned to normal ahead of schedule.

Mayer says, "We’ve added contextually relevant, left-hand navigation to the page. This new side panel highlights the most relevant search tools and refinements for your query. Over the past three years, we’ve launched Universal Search, the Search Options panel and Google Squared, and it’s those three technologies that power the left-hand panel."

Update 4: According to Brad Stone with the New York Times Bits Blog, Google is rolling out the new SERP design gradually right now (Tuesday and Wednesday).

Update 3: More people are reportedly seeing the new design today, assuming this isn’t April Fools material.

Update 2: One of my co-workers is seeing the new SERPs:

Update: Danny Sullivan reports that "slight variations" of this design are "live in the wild," and "still being shown to a randomly selected group of people," and that Google doesn’t have an expected launch date for a complete roll-out.

Original Article (11/19): Google is testing a new user interface for its search options feature. If you are unfamiliar with the search options feature, it is the link on your search results page that says "show options" and brings up a menu on the left-hand side of the screen providing a number of ways to filter your results.

According to Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land, a "small number" of Google users will see the new interface starting today. The aim of the new interface is to provide users with a cleaner display. Sullivan says that if the testing goes well, Google may roll it out after the New Year. He quotes Google’s Marissa Mayer as saying, "We’re basically looking at a new look and feel for Google. It’s an overall cleaning up of the search engine results page."

Do you think Google’s results pages need a new look and feel? Tell us what you think.

Images of this new look and feel look strangely familiar – similar to that of a certain "decision engine." Take a look:

Of course, the Google’s search options and Bing have been compared in the past (and other search engines utilize a similar design too for that matter), in terms of the general layout. Their functionalities differ on various levels. It’s important to note that this will just be how the search results pages will look, without having to click the search options link to get to it. There has been discussion in the past about how much users actually use Google’s search options, simply because the feature is easy to overlook. Such a change would put the options right in your face.

Besides being visually different, the options themselves are different in some areas. For example, a "see also" section has been added, which suggests related queries. There is also a section called "show search tools," which now contains things like the Wonder Wheel, Timeline View, and "more shopping sites."

Google may start messing around with the top navigation on search results pages next year, but the company has acknowledged that it works well right now. It will be interesting to see the change in use of this top navigation if the left-hand options go mainstream.

What do you think of this re-working of Google’s search results pages? Do you want to see it go mainstream, or do you like it better how it is right now? Share your thoughts.

Although 2009′s still one month short of being over, Google followed Bing and Yahoo this morning by identifying the year’s major search trends. Perhaps unsurprisingly, "Michael Jackson" was one of the most common terms, and interest in the 2008 Olympics waned.

Indeed, Michael Jackson topped Google’s "Fastest Rising (Global)" list, and showed up in the number two spot on the U.S. version. Meanwhile, Olympics-related terms took the first- and second-place positions on the global and U.S. "Fastest Falling" lists.

As for how everything else turned out, well, you can see for yourself below. It seems that Twitter, Facebook, and Lady Gaga were pretty much universally popular, while Heath Ledger, Barack Obama, and the Wii all received less attention this year than last.

Then here are a few notes in case some of the search terms are unfamiliar: Tuenti is often referred to as the Spanish version of Facebook. Sanalika looks to be a Turkish relative of Second Life. Dantri.com.vn is a Vietnamese news site, and Torpedo Gratis is a free SMS service offered in Brazil.

On the Official Google Blog, Marissa Mayer capped off the release of this data by stating, "It’s because of curious searchers like you, and the aggregation of billions of queries throughout the year, that our annual Zeitgeist has become an insightful look into a global mindset. So please explore the year to date on our Zeitgeist site, which showcases many of these interesting trends across various categories and countries, and more about how we came up with our lists. We’re already anticipating what searches in 2010 will illuminate!"

In late May, Larry Page stated at a conference that he believes real-time search is a necessity. He also referenced Twitter. Now, Marissa Mayer’s performed a sort of follow-up on both counts, and this might indicate an official corporate interest.

An on-the-fly response to a question from Loic Le Meur is one thing, after all. Rehearsed, repeated speeches constitute quite another – think products in development or acquisition talks. So let’s move on to Mayer’s statement to let you judge for yourself.

Mayer told Charles Arthur, "We think the real-time search is incredibly important and the real-time data that’s coming online can be super-useful in terms of us finding out something like, you know, is this conference today any good? Is it warmer in San Francisco than it is in Silicon Valley? You can actually look at tweets and see those sorts of patterns, so there’s a lot of useful information about real time and your actions that we think ultimately will reinvent search."

She later added, "I can’t comment on any discussions that we may or may not be having between the companies. I can say that we think that real-time search is very interesting."

There you have it, then. Although there may be one more thing worth noting: since Bing entered the real-time search arena last week, this increases the pressure for Google to act.

Marissa Mayer, Vice President of Search and User Experience at Google is testifying on Capitol Hill today before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet.

She will discuss the ways innovation can help preserve journalism, and how Google is "doing its part by driving significant traffic to online news publishers, by helping them generate revenue through advertising, and by providing tools and platforms that enable them to reach millions of people," as the company describes it on the Google Public Policy Blog.

Google has made Mayer’s entire testimony available for download (pdf). "Every day, millions of people search the web for relevant answers to their questions," says Mayer. "In response, search engines strive to connect each user with the right results, and those results can come in any number of different forms: a web page, an image, a video, a map, or a news story – something of particular relevance to today’s hearing."

"In each of those cases, search engines play the role of connecting users with high-quality content — often journalistic — ultimately sending traffic to the publisher’s website. Google is one such search engine that people use to find answers online," she adds.

The testimony is broken down into three main points – how search acts as a conduit for journalism, creating economic opportunities for publishers, and the structure of the web and its impact on publishers.

Within that last one, Mayer discusses "the atomic unit of consumption," the living story," and "keeping users engaged." Others speaking at the event include Senator Ben Cardin, Alberto Ibargüen, David Simon, Steve Coll, James Moroney, and Ariana Huffington.

Never mind money, search, and advertising for a minute. Whether you go home every evening and power up a PS3 or just have fond memories of early arcade and Nintendo games, Google’s got something to bring a smile to your face as gaming themes for iGoogle have been unveiled.

Yes, early this morning (or late last night if you’re on California time), iGoogle users were given access to 24 new themes, and there are some rather interesting ones in the mix. Try the World of Warcraft, Spore, and Call of Duty: World at War layouts if you’re into modern stuff.

There are also Mega Man, Mario, and Galaga themes if you like classics. And even Dungeons and Dragons and Scrabble designs for people who prefer games that are played with pens, paper, and boards.

Pretty cool, right? From a business perspective, it’s interesting that Google was able to get nine different game publishers to relax on intellectual property front, too.

Now there’s just the matter of what might come next. Marissa Mayer told Dan Ackerman, "We think that games are social, and as iGoogle becomes more and more social – we launched chat last week – we’ll know who your connections are, and that will allow you to interact with all your friends and start playing games on your iGoogle page. And [they] won’t be just single-player games, but multiplayer games."
