Delivering on its promise to connect people to individuals and things that matter most to them in their lives, Lycos U.S. today unveiled its Lycos People Search and Lycos Discussion Search products.

The top web site provider in South Korea, Daum Communications, is set to purchase Lycos, the US business of Spain’s Terra Lycos for $95 million.

Terra Lycos, a Spanish Internet service provider, is in final talks to sell its U.S. based web portal to a South Korean company.

With the advent of Google’s Gmail, a multitude of search engines, portals, and general-purpose sites have followed suit by offering enhanced email services, including increasing storage capacities.

Incorrectly claiming to be the first to offer this service, Lycos has announced that it will be offering 1 Gigabyte worth of storage to members of its email service. The service will cost around 3.49 Pounds a month, or $6.31 USD.

Terra Lycos is reporting that the number 1 searched keyword on its search engine was Iraqi prisoner abuse photos that appeared first on 60 Minutes II. Lycos features a weekly top 50, and according to the braintrust of the search engine, this is the first time anything related to the Iraqi war has made the top spot.

Wanting to concentrate on their Spanish language businesses, Terra Lycos has retained the services of Lehman Brother investment bank in an effort to sell its US-related businesses. This appears to include web portal Lycos.com.

Lycos has altered the content of its search results. Instead of continuing to use AlltheWeb’s (or FAST’s Web Search) database, Lycos’ searches are now powered by Inktomi and LookSmart.

Today, Lycos announced the launch of the HotBot Desktop search toolbar. The HotBot Desktop allows users to search the web, giving the results in a browser window.

The past year has been one of major transition in the search engine industry. Changes to the landscape have been enormous with mergers, acquisitions, and the easing of several formerly big-players out of the sector or, in the case of AltaVista, Lycos and LookSmart, into the minor leagues. We’ve seen new technologies and revenue models being tested by search firms, along with fresh promises of personalized ad-delivery through contextual placement. While there is no end in sight for changes in this evolving medium, this is a good time to examine the impact of such upheaval on the state of website marketing and search engine placement.
