It’s pretty obvious by now that the Internet can be a nasty place. Is it nasty enough to warrant censorship though?

That’s what the Home Affairs Committee suggested yesterday in their report titled, “The Roots of Violent Radicalisation.” The report comes from a study that began in May 2011 that found the Internet is the best vehicle to spread violence radicalism – more so than prisons, universities or places of worship. Witnesses told the Committee that the Internet contributed to most, if not all, cases of violent radicalisation.

It’s worth noting that the British government has powers under the Terrorism Act of 2006 to remove unlawful material from the Internet. The Committee recommends, however, that ISPs should be more proactive in monitoring the material that is on the Internet. They suggest that ISPs work with government to remove material that promotes violent extremism.

The Committee highlight three matters:

The need for better liaison and information-sharing between prison authorities, the police, the UK Border Agency and other relevant authorities following the release of prisoners who have been convicted of terrorist offences or who are otherwise considered to be at risk of violent radicalisation.

The importance of reviewing the list of proscribed organisations – the prospect of de-proscription could in certain circumstances create an incentive for organisations to renounce their support for violence.

The threat from the far-right, which consists mostly of solitary, disaffected individuals rather than organised terrorist units.

The group also said that the current name of their current counter-radicalisation strategy “Prevent” should be changed to “Engage” to promote a more supportive approach in working with those at risk.

The chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon Keith Vaz MP, had this to say on the proposed rules:

“The July 7th bombings in London, carried out by four men from West Yorkshire, were a powerful demonstration of the devastating and far-reaching impact of home-grown radicalisation.

We remain concerned by the growing support for non-violent extremism and more extreme and violent forms of far-right ideology.

The conviction last week of four men from London and Cardiff radicalised over the internet, for a plot to bomb the London Stock Exchange and launch a Mumbai-style atrocity on the streets of London, shows that we cannot let our vigilance slip. More resources need to be directed to these threats and to preventing radicalisation through the internet and in private spaces. These are the fertile breeding grounds for terrorism.

We do not believe universities are “complacent to the risks” of radicalisation as has been suggested. Those engaged in public life must ensure that the language they use reflects the same tone.

Individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds are vulnerable to radicalisation. There is no typical profile or pathway to becoming radicalised. It is a policy of engagement, not alienation that will successfully prevent radicalisation.”

The Committee has a point. There should be more effort directed at preventing people from falling into radical groups. I just don’t know if attempting to censor Web sites is the right way to go about it.

What do you think? Should governments be given control over the content of the Internet to prevent violence? Let us know in the comments.

Trial documents dating back as far as 1674 recorded for cases heard at London’s Old Bailey arrived online thanks to the work of a group of universities.

If you sought something through search and found a document stamped with that date, you might think your search engine of choice developed time travel. Modern technology and effort made the Old Bailey Online site possible.

As Resource Shelf noted, nearly 200,000 cases have been indexed and archived for visitors to the website. It’s a remarkable achievement:

Professor Robert Shoemaker, head of the Department of History at the University of Sheffield, and co-director of the project, said: “It is now possible to search records of 197,745 individual trials, running to 110,000 pages of text and some 120 million words.”

“Up until now this treasure trove of social, legal and family history has only been available to a few dedicated historians who were prepared to spend months peering at microfilm.”

One entry from the earliest day we could find for the records, April 29, 1674, showed Old Bailey lived up to its reputation as The Hanging Court. “There was another had Judgment to be hanged for Robbing one Thomas Feild in the Kings High-way near Enfield , and taking from him 4 pound [Text unreadable in original.] Shillings,” it reads.

Theft and burglary seemed rife in Jolly Olde England. Punishment existed in equal measure; instead of a revolving door jail system, the only revolving was done by the cooling corpse of the hanging prisoner, at the end of its noose.

To our amazement, we found something in the earliest Ordinary Account we could locate that looked almost modern. At the end of the Account after the condemned are hanged, there are advertisements, one of which comes from a doctor claiming a deafness cure.

Sounds almost like something you’d see in spam, doesn’t it?

Based in the US, both are with Voce Communications, a West-coast PR firm.

Mike and Josh will be in London next week and we’re planning a social get-together in London on Saturday April 12.

The venue’s not yet fully confirmed but it will most likely be in Soho, so a pretty central location that’s easy to get to and from. (I’ll update this post with the details once it’s confirmed.)

The get-together will be a great opportunity to meet up with two PR guys from the US who are among the earliest adopters of social media for business.

If you’re interested in meeting up for an informal evening of some drinks, some food and some great conversation, starting at about 6.30pm, please leave a comment in this post, just to get an idea of numbers, or drop me a note.

Hope you can join us!

The European headquarters for Yahoo’s operations will be boxing up all of their purple goodies and shifting offices out of the UK.

Over the next 18 months, Yahoo plans to move five percent of their European workforce. They decided Switzerland, rather than London, should be the home for their Continental headquarters.

A statement appearing on Yahoo News confirmed the change in locale:

“Yahoo! Europe has begun a programme to relocate its European headquarters to Switzerland,” the company said in a statement.

“This decision is part of our ongoing international business strategy to increase competitiveness, deliver financial results, performance and efficiencies.”

It added: “Yahoo! Europe remains committed to maintaining a strong presence in all of its key markets in Europe.”

With Yahoo looking for cost savings and other ways of streamlining their operations, a move to Switzerland must fit into that line of thinking. We’re inclined to believe favorable corporate tax rates in Switzerland may have motivated this strategic move.

A new film project called "Overheated Symphony" is asking all women with mobile phones to make a short movie between 40 seconds and four minutes in length and then send it over the Internet to a London-based film director who will edit the clips together.

The project is part of the Birds Eye View film festival happening in London next month, which features the work of female filmmakers. Besides the overall theme "Overheated" there are no restrictions on content or subject matter. " If it’s hot, we’d like to see it," the projects Web site states. "Ladies wherever you are, whoever you are, we want you to join in.’

Sarah Turner, the British film director who will be doing the final edit from the mobile phone submissions, says the concept for "Overheated Symphony" comes from the 1927 film by German filmmaker Walter Ruttmann called "Berlin – Symphony of a Great City," which used a collection of still pictures from a variety of sources to capture city life.

"Because they are films made by women, women’s themes and issues are bound to be an integral part of the finished piece," she told Reuters. "Making a film from all these female voices around the world is quite a beautiful thing, but also it’s about shooting down the idea that women are not up to date with technology," said Rachel Millward, director of the Birds Eye View festival.

Contributors can go to the Birds Eye View’s own YouTube channel to upload their films to be edited. The deadline is March 2 and the finished result will be shown March 9 at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts.

If not for the Internet, you would be waiting for either 90 seconds of coverage on the 11 o’clock news, or the morning paper to find out about Led Zeppelin’s tribute to Atlantic Records late founder Ahmet Ertegun.

Led Zeppelin broke up when I was 13, at a time when music news was even more rigidly controlled than any DRM purveyor today could imagine in his most vivid dreams. Instantly knowing the set list from their London show? Only if someone took notes and called at international rates after the show.

In 2007, plenty of interest among music fans manifested itself in numerous blogs. Billboard Magazine, once one of those outlets that owned music news, blogged about problems getting in the show.

However, music publication NME came through with the set list from the two hour concert. In a way this showed how far media coverage has come with the Internet, and how far it has to go.

Though NME followed up with a solid review, there was no stream to follow of the show. No audio, no video, no chance for some horrid, clever person to (horrors!) record this performance.

A once in a lifetime reunion should have had a greater reach than its audience. If the much-expected DVD of the concert does emerge, that would make up for this for a lot of fans. We shouldn’t have to wait for a DVD, not when modern multimedia streaming and content distribution networks could have made the show a lot more immediate to what would have been a grateful online audience.

Unfortunately I didn’t have a laptop to do any Live Blog coverage like I would have liked to so instead I took what notes I could on paper and took plenty of photos along with a couple of videos.

Mashup* Demo Event – Day Before FOWA

First up let me tell you about the Mashup* Demo event, In running order the following companies demoed, yes they only had 5 minutes to demo, this made sure they got to the point of why we should try out their site/service/product etc and why investors should invest in them:

3.30pm – Serena Software
3.35pm – Mobestar
3.40pm – 15 Second TV
3.45pm – BabelTV
3.50pm – WeLoveLocal.com
3.55pm – Rummble
4.00pm – Magpie
4.05pm – Inspire
4.10pm – Bondaii
4.15pm – Meecard
4.20pm – Serena Software
4.25pm – Rollsense
4.30pm – Fav.or.it
4.35pm – Kwiqq
4.40pm – Tipped
4.45pm – testcard.tv

I have yet to test fully every site/service/product on this list; however I hope to do very soon. The venue it’s self was great and I had some interesting talks with people such as James Dyer (TestCard.Tv) and Dominik Grolimund, Co-Founder and CEO of Caleido who has created Wuala, which is a new way of storing, sharing, and publishing files on the internet.

I would however like to make some suggestions for improvements, mainly on the after party hosted by Blognation, as part of their UK Launch of Blognation. Me and a few others agreed that some music would have been nice to go along with that disco ball they Club had, along with some food/nibbles as it was dinner time by then…

Other than that it was pretty good, I’ll be sure to be checking out each and every site/service/product in more detail. By the way Richard Brooks (Managing Director of The 100 Year Website) where were you – someone said they talked to you but we couldn’t find you again – hope you had a good time and that my invite for you to come was worthwhile!

Amazon’s Simple Storage Service

Sergio Gasparrini, Dvorak Uncensored’s London correspondent, deserves credit for the capture. His picture shows a black Volkswagen Beetle with a camera tripod strapped on top. Unfortunately, the picture’s rather blurry, so some conclusions just can’t be drawn.

If, for example, we could see whether the car was left- or right-hand drive, we might get an idea of Google’s commitment to Street View overseas. A right-hand drive Beetle would likely have been purchased in Europe and meant to stay in Europe. A left-hand drive car could have been shipped from the U.S., and might return again in short order.

Pictures of the car’s license plates or tags might yield similar hints, but alas, they’re not available.

In any case, it looks like part of London is getting the Street View treatment, and we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for further developments. Google was not available for comment on the matter.

Natalie Minor’s post on The Facebook Blog contains a graph with a blue line stretching far above its yellow, orange, and green brethren. Blue, in case you couldn’t guess, is the color assigned to represent London users.

“The UK is also growing on a national scale; in terms of unique users, it’s currently the third biggest country on Facebook, coming in just behind Canada but is the fastest growing internal market we have,” wrote Minor. “The UK also contributed over 5.5 billion page views in the month of August, which means everyone out there saw an average of 1,100 Facebook pages.”

Those are some impressive numbers, and they’re only likely to grow as Facebook opens an office in Soho and intensifies its overseas efforts.

The downside: this success has highlighted the stupidity of some Americans. “We’re so pleased to note that the British are now enjoying Miss Teen South Carolina’s philosophical meanderings as much as we did – she’s currently one of the most popular Posted Items in the London network,” stated Minor. Oh, well.

I’ve seen it: an amazing 3D model of London that was meant to wind up in Google Earth. Only now, due to what I’ll politely call “bureaucratic nonsense,” it won’t.

Coverage could center on Dr. Andrew Hudson-Smith – he’s the leader of the Virtual London modeling group, and is also author of the Digital Urban blog. “Smithee,” as he calls himself, relays full statements from both the Ordnance Survey and Google. But the Londonist offers some less restrained reporting, and it’s there that we’ll go.

(For the record, don’t blame Smithee for what’s to come; he wrote, “Suffice to say it made us smile but also worry slightly in a ‘we need to distance ourselves from all this for the sake of our career’ sort of way.”)

The Londonist identifies the Ordnance Survey as “our national mapping agency,” and states that its actions have “made London the laughing stock of the mapping world.” The Londonist also depicts a conversation between the agency and Google in a way that makes the Ordnance Survey (if it can be treated as a single entity) look like a pigheaded idiot.

In short, it would appear that the Ordnance Survey could not come to terms with Google over a licensing agreement; the government agency then issued a 150-word explanation, while the search giant wrote, “disappointed.” Makes you inclined to side with the Londonist and old Smithee, eh?

Dr. Hudson-Smith recommends that any interested parties “join the Public Geodata campaign and if you’re publicly motivated lobby your MEP about the Inspire plan . . .”
