Interview with the Link Guru
While being much less self promotional than others in the same field, Debra Mastaler is nonetheless one of the most well known and creative link builders in the industry. I have wanted to interview her for a long time since she has a unique way of working but she’s hard to pin down and not very good about returning interview questions…

How long have you been doing link building? What did you do before link building?

Is Google Hitting Directory Links?
· 95

Algorithmic flux or selective penalization? Nobody’s sure and nobody that can answer is talking so far, but paid link directories have been plummeting in Google search results. Many are not ranking for their own business name, according to reports, even though webmasters have not received penalty notices.

SEObook Makes Free Tools Available

Of all the SEO principles out there, two remain at the forefront as the most essential: keywords and links. Understanding the language of the searcher (the words they will use to find you) while maximizing the external link love (how search robots know whether you are trustworthy) are top priorities for anyone trying to optimize their website.

SES – Lee’s Day 3 Wrap Up
Another great day is how I’d characterize day three of the San Jose Search Engine Strategies conference.

SES – Are Paid Links Evil?
Search engines, especially Google, say don’t do ‘em. But some search marketers say paid links work. Are paid links subverting search quality? Or are they simply a fact of life, here to stay? We explore the issues, in this session.

Reciprocal Links: What’s Excessive Anyway?
· 8

LinkedIn Links to Recent Contacts, Redefines Recent

On Friday, I wondered what happened to a favorite LinkedIn feature for viewing recent users. I received two subsequent emails from customer service, only to find out I was wrong about the feature because of LinkedIn’s questionable grammar. Gamers are still there though, this time with bigger budgets, and things may be about to change again – most likely to a much more complicated game.

Backdating Nofollow On Specific Domains

There are times when you might want to retro-actively add nofollow to links you have given freely in the past. As an example some time ago I started using the nofollow Wikipedia plugin.

How Do Doorway and Startpages Differ?
· 5

There’ve been some fine lines walked lately by Google’s Webspam team. Not too long ago, it was paid links reporting, and now the line is between startpages and doorway pages. The definitions are quite similar, but Google says it’s all about intent, which makes the argument reminiscent of the art versus indecency squabbles of the past.

Mahalo – Search Results Inside Search Results?
So I was just reading a post by Graywolf about the Mahalo blog giving out nice free links to sites they would never include in their own search results for being to ’spammy’ and started poking around the new human search engine.
