The English-language version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is set to hit theaters on December 21st. People are generally looking forward to the movie for varying reasons: they were a fan of the original, the loved the books by Stieg Larsson, it’s directed by David Fincher, but for some it’s the soundtrack.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross already won Academy Award for scoring Fincher’s last movie, The Social Network, and as previously reported, they’re together again for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Earlier this year we learned that Reznor and Yeah Yeah Yeahs leader Karen O were getting together to cover the Led Zeppelin classic “Immigrant Song”. After hearing that, it left many wondering what theme the rest of the soundtrack would have.

Today, you can listen to six additional songs off of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We’ve also included the Led Zeppelin cover as well:

    Dragon Tattoo Sampler by ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

On this day (November 8th) in 1971, the world was given a gift in the form of an eight-track album from rock gods Led Zeppelin. Today, the untitled 4th studio album (IV, Four Symbols, ZoSo, whatever you want to call it) turns 40 years old.

Led Zeppelin IV is not a cult hit, or an underground masterpiece. It’s an album that’s been heard by nearly everyone that appreciates rock & roll music. It’s popular, and its accolades are numerous. There are some albums that are great because they feel like they were made specifically for you, and are special because you feel unique in your appreciation for it – this is not one of those albums.

This is a seminal album that was made for everyone – and if you don’t like it then there is probably something wrong with you. That’s just how it is.

But in the same vein, Led Zeppelin IV remains an important and personal album to any adolescent music fan – growing up in 1971 or 2011. It has the ability to be special for each and every person that listens to it.

And as many times as “Stairway to Heaven” or “Black Dog” is overplayed and murdered on your local rock radio station, it fails to make Led Zeppelin IV any less influential – or amazing.

Oh, and let us not forget that the closing combination of “Going to California” and “When the Levee Breaks” could be one of the best finishes in rock history.

Let’s take a musical journey through ZoSo, with the help of YouTube:

Stairway to Heaven (live, from “The Song Remains The Same”)

If not for the Internet, you would be waiting for either 90 seconds of coverage on the 11 o’clock news, or the morning paper to find out about Led Zeppelin’s tribute to Atlantic Records late founder Ahmet Ertegun.

Led Zeppelin broke up when I was 13, at a time when music news was even more rigidly controlled than any DRM purveyor today could imagine in his most vivid dreams. Instantly knowing the set list from their London show? Only if someone took notes and called at international rates after the show.

In 2007, plenty of interest among music fans manifested itself in numerous blogs. Billboard Magazine, once one of those outlets that owned music news, blogged about problems getting in the show.

However, music publication NME came through with the set list from the two hour concert. In a way this showed how far media coverage has come with the Internet, and how far it has to go.

Though NME followed up with a solid review, there was no stream to follow of the show. No audio, no video, no chance for some horrid, clever person to (horrors!) record this performance.

A once in a lifetime reunion should have had a greater reach than its audience. If the much-expected DVD of the concert does emerge, that would make up for this for a lot of fans. We shouldn’t have to wait for a DVD, not when modern multimedia streaming and content distribution networks could have made the show a lot more immediate to what would have been a grateful online audience.

The return of Led Zeppelin is a great thing, and it’s generated a lot of search traffic. In terms of the benefit to one company, though, an announcement related to the iPhone’s UK release did much more good.

Why “one company” out of all the people who could be connected to either event? Simply put: because O2 can be connected to both. “[M]obile telco O2 . . . sponsors the venue for the Led Zep gig (the former Millenium Dome, now rechristened The O2), and will also be the exclusive network provider for the iPhone in the UK,” reports Hitwise’s Robin Goad.

So, following the announcement of the Led Zeppelin reunion concert, UK Internet traffic to the O2 arena’s homepage shot up from practically zero to almost 1.5 percent. O2’s main site was unaffected – it actually suffered from a decline in traffic for most of the week.

On the other hand, the main O2 site “did receive a boost yesterday following the iPhone announcement,” writes Goad. “Its increase in traffic was 21%, compared to 6% for Apple and 12% for Carphone Warehouse (the sole independent retailer carrying the iPhone).”

I’m now going to wag a finger (and I’m not saying which) at everyone who made the iPhone look more influential than Led Zeppelin in this one small way.
