While Twitter’s servers remained intact, the response to the dunk (of the year?) was immense. In case you missed it, before we go further, you need to take a look:

Even the NBA’s Twitter account weighed in on the subject by retweeting the following reactions to Griffin’s dunk:

The NBA Twitter even retweeted LeBron’s post. For some reason, however, when it came time to complain about how people embraced such an athletic feat, Kendrick Perkins lashed at out one person: LeBron James. Not only did Perkins try to put the onus of liking Griffin’s dunk on one person, he also waited about a week after the fact to bitch and moan about LeBron’s tweet.

But once he started complaining, he came through like a champ:

“You don’t see Kobe [Bryant] tweeting,” Perkins told Yahoo! Sports Tuesday. “You don’t see Michael Jordan tweeting.

“If you’re an elite player, plays like that don’t excite you. At the end of the day, the guys who are playing for the right reasons who are trying to win championships are not worrying about one play.

“They also are not tweeting about themselves talking about going down to No. 2. I just feel [James] is always looking for attention and he wants the world to like him.”

Perkins’ reaction is the same as the guy who gets beat up by 10 people, but only blames one person. Memo to the Oklahoma City center: If you don’t want LeBron James tweeting about you getting absolutely destroyed, don’t get absolutely destroyed. Maybe next time, instead of letting Griffin bring the sky down on your head, you’ll foul the heck out of him.

Whatever the case, if you do get dunked on again and Twitter explodes, it would be better if you sucked it up and simply waited for someone else to get smashed instead of complaining about it a week after the fact.

If Skyrim and real-life had a baby it would look like this. What I love about the video is how it shows the ridiculousness of everything you do in the Elder Scrolls games.

I think I saw this show in the movie Idiocracy, right after the ‘OW, MY BALLS‘ segment. Seriously, if you were a semi-respectable television news personality…why would you do this?

This animated movie looks to have an intriguing plot, and the animation is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Can’t wait to see it release.

For whatever reason, Lebron James did an interview with children who are the young fans of the Liverpool Football Club. I have to hand it to Lebron, he knew how to make the designation of “football” and “American football”. The british kids are pretty adorable too.

A double dose of Skyrim related awesomeness today. This man did a chant-over, and used all sorts of various instrumentals for this remix.

I’m going to make a bold prediction for the year 2012; Hand Dancing is really going to catch on before the apocalypse in December.

Anyway, last Sunday, when the Jets played the Buffalo Bills, Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson imitated the Burress incident after he scored a touchdown, which actually led to Johnson receiving a $10,000 fine for his antics. The celebration in question:

It’s a weird world we live when LeBron James, one of the most criticized athletes of our time, is treated as a sympathetic figure because the people going after him are doing so in a buffoonish manner. To be honest, my expectation was one that saw LeBron being pilloried across the social Internet. To see the opposite happen, that is, people attacking his critics, is not normal behavior for the Internet crowd.

LeBron, with the help from Dwayne Wade and Chris Paul, put out the following video promoting the event.

If you’re wondering how this event came to be, it started with with Kevin Durant playing an impromptu flag football game with a few Oklahoma State frat guys. By playing, we pretty much meant Durant pretty much dominated the game, throwing 4 touchdowns and accounting for 3 interceptions.

Thus the “LeBron’s Flag Football Classic” was born. It’s unclear if Dwayne Wade and Chris Paul will be participating in the event, but we wouldn’t be surprised.

His throwing motion, which to some observers, is that of a trebuchet, has long been the topic of discussion since he first stepped onto the field as a collegiate freshman. Because of that, debate rages over whether his ability to win in the college ranks would translate to the NFL, making him a successful quarterback, a career that demands an ability to throw the ball with a certain style of mechanics.

Without turning this post into a Football Outsiders breakdown, let’s just say there’s a lot of debate about Tebow, and because of that, there’s a little Twitter war that’s been going on in the name of Tebow’s potential as a legitimate NFL quarterback. The social media hubbub was started by Ben Roethlisberger yes-man, Merril Hoge, who also moonlights for ESPN as an NFL analyst.

As is the norm when people want to draw attention to their opinions, Hoge took to Twitter to blast Tebow, who is starting his second year for the Denver Broncos and is/was competing for the starting quarterback position.

Hoge was less than complimentary, so much so, in fact, his rant seemed almost personal. In a incredibly popular social media setting, something like that with such a polarizing figure does not go unnoticed:

Why Hoge felt necessary to completely tear down Tebow is unknown. Perhaps Hoge is jealous of the fact that he’ll never be as famous as his target and took it upon himself to point out to the world just how horrible Tebow is? Whatever the case, Hoge’s critiques felt like personal attacks instead of simple observations.

Too bad Hoge isn’t as emotionally charged about the safety of college co-eds in Milledgeville, Georgia.

As is the social media way, Hoge’s Twitter blasts didn’t go unnoticed and none other than LeBron James chimed in, taking up for Tebow–and with that, we’re playing the Twitter feud. James’ first tweet took up for Tebow, but after that, his target was Hoge and the way in which he blasted Tebow:

And now, there’s a Twitter trend dedicated to him. Needless to say, the reaction swings many different ways, because that’s the nature of sports talk, especially when it hits Twitter:

Was Hoge a little too critical? Time will tell, but it’s always fun when social media is used in such a matter, especially when it leads to things like this:

Tebow was/is (?) perhaps the most famous virgin in the world at one point. He’s also clearly still a polarizing figure, which leads to such inventive and creative uses of Twitter. One thing’s for sure, the even if the controversy was generated by ESPN, it’s certainly a buzz-worthy story now.

And then, in the 122 minute, two minutes into stoppage time, Megan Rapinoe delivered the most exquisite cross to the head of Abby Wambach, who, in turn, buried the ball in the back of the net, courtesy of a ruthless header, causing an Ian Darke’s explosion of “Abby Wambach has saved the USA’s life.” Had the cross been an inch or two shorter, Andreia, Brazil’s goalkeeper, would’ve parried the ball, moving it out of harm’s way. As it stands, Rapinoe’s cross was true, so true, in fact, it surprised even her:

“I took a touch and smoked it,” Rapinoe told reporters. “I don’t think I’ve ever hit a cross with my left foot that well. And then that beast in the air got a hold of it.”

Wambach’s forehead did the rest:

“To be honest,” said striker Abby Wambach, who tied the game in the 122nd minute, “I literally can’t believe what just happened. The last three hours of my life have been some of the most emotionally up and down moments I’ve experienced, and I’m glad to be able to say I did it with my teammates because in the end it took all of us.”

Wambach’s cool finish pushed the game into the penalty shootout phase, and thanks to a fantastic Hope Solo save, the United States prevailed 5-3, giving them the overall victory and advancing them to the semifinal of the Women’s World Cup, where they will face France.

Two additional heroes emerged from the Brazil/USA game: Hope Solo and Alex Krieger. Solo had a magnificent save during the penalty shootout, giving Team USA the window it needed to win. The other was Alex Krieger, who scored the decisive fifth penalty, propelling her team to the semifinals. While Solo is already the face of the 2011 World Cup team, her save may have just pushed her into the superstar realm, provided if Team USA can finish the job and win it all. From one who covers social media on a daily basis, it’s nice to see it being used in such a manner. Granted, the “Rise & Grind” tweets are harmless enough, but to see other professional athletes acknowledge the great finish to the Brazil/USA game shows the true appeal of Twitter. Normally, ESPN would have to call and/or track these athletes down just to get a soundbite, an exercise they may not have any success in.

With Twitter, that’s no longer an issue.

As for the victorious ladies, their next game is Wednesday against France, in what should be another pressure-filled game; although, considering the way Team USA handled the pressure of the Brazil game, they should be up for another battle, provided they aren’t emotionally spent following such a dramatic finish.

At least the was the narrative the day after the Finals ended.

Two days later, however, it seems celebrating the Dallas win is now the thing, even if it’s at the expense of LeBron James leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers and the resulting ire that followed. Thankfully, there are a number of NBA-following blog to catch these stories as they pop up. Perhaps the most humorous reaction to the Mavericks winning came from the state of Ohio itself, when Governor John Kasich made the entire Mavericks team honorary Ohioans, complete with a certificate acknowledging the accomplishment.

Furthermore, the distinction doesn’t miss a chance to poke fun at LeBron James and his decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers, using Nowtizki’s career path to emphasize their dislike:

This is a pretty high-level LeBron crack, all things considered. Not only did the governor actually have to draft such a resolution, it also had to go through the bureaucratic process necessary to get anything done in government. That’s a lot of paperwork, just to dig at a guy who left a basketball team. But hey, if it keeps the constituents happy, it’s totally worth it. Anything for the constituents.

James aside, there was some joy to be had from Dallas’ victory, and it wasn’t just from reveling in the failure of others. Shawn Marion, for one, is loving life as an NBA Champion, something the following video demonstrates quite nicely:

Alas, Nowitzki’s trend didn’t stay in the Twitter Trends top three for the entirety of the following day. Meanwhile,#lebronhairlinethemesong is still holding strong, something this recent screenshot demonstrates quite well:

Twitter wasn’t the only place LeBron’s plight was enjoyed, either. The aforementioned Basketball Jones had some fun with James and his ability to flop at will.

Keep in mind, all of this stems from James having a less-than-LeBron type of game, which factored significantly in the Heat’s loss. While Nowitzki’s trend was humorous, the current one concerning LeBron goes beyond basketball. Apparently, people really want to see King James fail, and if he has anymore outings like Game Four, they may very well get their wish. If that day happens, it wouldn’t be surprising if Twitter melted in the same manner that Landon Donovan’s World Cup goal caused.

Sadly, while he was certainly the catalyst, so far, LeBron has nothing to contribute to the trend.

However, as is the case since social media and the sports world has become one, combined with the fickle, immediate nature of fans nowadays, Nowitzki has become the butt of a Twitter-based joke.

A quick glance at the current Twitter trends and you’ll notice “Dirk NoRingski,” a blast that makes fun of the fact Nowitzki hasn’t won an NBA Championship. Furthermore, it’s pretty clear that many of those who watched last night’s game believe the series is over and the Heat will the new kings of the NBA. While that may or may not come to pass, there are still at least three more games to be played before Nowitzki earns such a designation, one that brought defenders as well as joke-makers to the party:

So? What happens if Miami loses Game Two? Will there be a Twitter trend of the hashtag “#LeChoke” or “Dwyane Weak?” We’ll have to find out after Thursday’s game, but considering the nature of Twitter, it’ll probably happen.

He said that LeBron James is better than his former teammate and NBA god Michael Jordan.

“”Michael Jordan is probably the greatest scorer to ever play in the game, but I may go as far to say LeBron James is probably the greatest player to ever play the game. Not only can he score at will, but he keeps everybody involved.”

He went on to say that, “LeBron James will dominate the game on the offensive end and he’s able to do it on the defensive end as well. He can get in those passing lanes and dominate the game.”

Oh snap.

Pippen has rattled of a series of tweets defending himself to the heat he is taking for his comments:

“Scottie Pippen” has been trending pretty much all day, and the hashtag #scottiepippentweets is also a top trend on Twitter. It seems to be an odd combination of obviously untrue statements and the Kanye West “Imma let you finish meme.”

C’mon guys, the man did play with Jordan. He was simply stating an opinion.. Maybe a little too early in LeBron’s career to make that statement but it’s definitely not a crazy stance to take. Too bad Kobe’s probably better than both of them.
