There are times when you might want to retro-actively add nofollow to links you have given freely in the past. As an example some time ago I started using the nofollow Wikipedia plugin.

But there could be multiple external links that you want to nofollow, or a whole category if Google have their "do no evil" way for various types of compensated reviews, or you might want to be extremely evil and nofollow links after a period of time.

No Old Spam Links solves all these problems and I haven’t had any problems so far where I have been testing it.
It started out as a very simple plugin where you had to edit the plugin arrays to add sites, but now there is a comprehensive interface, and detailed instructions.

You might also like to check out the Kontera control plugin which now also works with adsense. This allows you to block advertising on certain posts.
It is suggested this is useful for paid reviews, but also if you are using affiliate links within a post, you wouldn’t want Google Adsense adverts for the same product appearing.

Don’t forget to sign up to Lucia’s feed, and whilst she has been concentrating on her knitting blog until recently, she does geeky programming by day and I am sure she is going to keep pumping out useful plugins for monetization.

Pay attention, because this will be quick. Knitting will be five minutes ago not too long from now, just like scrapbooking went five-minutes-late just a short time ago alongside Longenburger parties – neither of which I would have known anything about had it not been for various women in my life who insisted I needed just this information cluttering up the nooks and crannies of my bio-random access memory.

Okay, so not as quick as I thought it would be, wordier too.

I wouldn’t know about the current knitting craze either if it hadn’t been for Yahoo’s Buzz Log (I knew a guy who kept a buzz log in college, but it was something else entirely). We may have anticipated that Yahoo would impart this knowledge, given their estrogenized (caution, made-up word) history.

Yahoo’s Molly McCall reports that the term "knitting" made the top 700 searches over the past two months. She writes:

Scarf- and sock-warmed creators have boosted queries for "how to knit," "knitting patterns," and "knitting yarn." "Crochet," "yarn," "needlecrafts," and "sewing" have logged upticks. Even "patterns" has picked up stitches.

McCall goes on to baffle fogies and machismo-defenders by pointing out a bunch of New Age knitting hooey. Spray-painted graffiti is so last decade – now Guerilla knittas tag bridges with cozies.

All you Yoga masters can go back to the turn of the century. Knitting is the fast track to nirvana these days.

Yes, they are making a movie about a knitter.

While the rest of you are working on your needlepoint, I’ll get back to not giving a flying…well, I’ll just get back to my own boring hobbies, like making fun of things I don’t understand — a Bluegrass tradition.

I read with amusement about Gregg Winn, the 2ic at Telstra telling Apple to "stick to your knitting" in respect to the new iPhone.

At first glance the article heading aired of hypocracy given the telco now delivers movies and other content against local video, CD and games stores.

Tesltra, who stated in it’s public strategic direction want to move upstream in the information pyramid towards rich media content and application services – to in effect become another media and software company – a Yahoo/Seven, a Nine MSN, a Google/ News Ltd – to repeat the digital transformation achieved by British Telecom (BT) and many other telcos around the globe – to also expand it’s interests in Yellow Pages and it’s other investments.

In more detailed reading Winn appears to be saying do not get carried away with the i-phone hype. This is good advice but without doubt Apple has acheived the "innovators" tag in the market. The marketing is slick and it has create a devoted customer culture. The Ipod created a new batch of consumers beyond its historical computer user base – with the Ipod it acheived the MP3 player market leadership and the dominant position. Today there are thousands of other MP3 players on the market and as competition increases so will profit margin pressure. From a manufacturers point of view they need to find the next wave. How many Ipod users will migrate to the Iphone?

The next big wave is around the convergence of computers and telephony – in particular wireless telephony or *VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) – this is where the Iphone comes in.

As Winn says there will be hundreds of these devices to choose from by the time the I-phone launches here in Oz. There’s a lot of things that can happen with technology in a very short time. This week we have seen landline revenues drop something like 21% and Telstra Next G announce an increase in speed to the wireless network to over 14mbps – fastest in the world.

All these devices have to run across wireless networks.

After the device war settles it will be leveraging this technology on top on social and business community web sites such as MySpace, Ebay and BANGitUP where the real advancements will be made.

Footnote

*If you weren’t sure VOIP enables you to make phone calls over the Internet and has been around for a few years with the likes of Skype. The original call quality was pretty poor but has improved significantly over that time and is near business operation grade. The problem or greatest barrier to adoption for most people and businesses is that it is yet another device of communication you and I have to deal with – another number – another address on your email signature or business card – another bit of technology – another address book that needs to be maintained. Many times it easier just to pick up the phone.

As we enter into the next wave of technological evolution then there will be multiple devices – what we want is the seamless transfer of information across multiple devices. We want to keep our existing telephone number and simply have that VOIP enabled.

Technorati has started an effort to catalogue bloggers by topic. This is welcome, but Technorati’s solution so far is not really working that well.

The reason is that bloggers – rather than users – choose their tags. This makes it really easy for a blogger like me to claim that I am #1 for knitting, even though I have never touched the subject. I personally wouldn’t do this since it’s dishonest, still, there’s nothing in the current Technorati system that would stop a blogger with a lot of links from trying.

A better way to find a blogger’s “beat” is through keyword density. These tools identify the keywords that are most dominant ones on a given Web site. For example, here’s a sample report for MarketingVOX.

Reader Comments…

Steve Rubel is a PR strategist with nearly 16 years of public relations, marketing, journalism and communications experience. He currently serves as a Senior Vice President with Edelman, the largest independent global PR firm.

He authors the Micro Persuasion weblog, which tracks how blogs and participatory journalism are changing the public relations practice.
