Kate Hudson has joined the cast of Zach Braff’s Kickstarter-funded film, “Wish I Was Here”, and not everyone is happy about it.

The Kickstarter campaign, which surpassed its $2 million goal in three days, was a highly controversial move on Braff’s part and was the talk of Twitter for a while as moviegoers wondered why they should give up their hard-earned cash to a millionaire actor.

Still, he’s continuing to get backers on the crowd-sourcing site, so there are people who want to see this movie get made. According to Kickstarter, the campaign will end on Friday. Braff, who wrote the script with his brother, will direct and star as a 30-something husband and father who is struggling to find his identity.

Also announced in the cast lineup are Josh Gad and Mandy Patinkin.

Director Eli Roth, whose Hemlock Grove was recently released as a Netflix original series, appeared on The Adam Carolla Show to discuss a variety of things. The topic of Kickstarter came up, and it sounds like this might be an avenue Roth could explore for getting films made in the future.

Thanksgiving anyone?

“This new Kickstarter thing is changing everything,” says Roth. “I’ve actually thought about funding movies this way, because you don’t have to pay back any investors, and then basically whatever the release plan is, like you own the movie one hundred percent, and you have nothing to lose. You don’t have to pay anybody back.”

Carolla also mentions that he’s shooting a Kickstarter video with Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, so we’ll be on the lookout for that.

The amazing cover comes from Tel-Aviv-based Rotem Shefy (vocals) and Leat Sabbah (cello).

Kickstarter has just announced a new way to explore projects on the site. It’s called “Video Mode” and it’s a “full-screen presentation where you can watch every single live project video”

Video mode is an interesting new way to jump around to various Kickstarter projects. One you enter, you’ll be shown a fullscreen video from a random project. If the video interest you, and you wish to learn more about the project, just click the green “explore this project” button and you’ll be directed to that project’s main page.

Or, if the particular project bores you are just looks plain stupid, you can move on. At this point, you have three options:

One, you can be taken to a project that’s completely different from the one you’re currently viewing. Or, you can find a similar project video by a) geography (something near Evanston) or b) category (something else in Short Film).

“Since Kickstarter launched in 2009, over 75,000 project videos have been uploaded to Kickstarter. From day one, we’ve been blown away by the amazing videos you’ve created — from the singer Allison Weiss setting the standard early on, to the incredible Wes Anderson spoof the Inman Park Squirrel Census produced, and all of the amazing “Oh hey, I didn’t see you there” videos. For a long time we’ve been wanting to find a good way to show these off, so people could explore projects through the medium of video,” says Kickstarter.

Kickstarter launched its first-ever iOS app back in February, and has since announced a couple of milestones including $100 million total pledges to games through the site.

It’s been almost nine months since Ouya, the little Android game console that could, smashed Kickstarter records. Now the console is ready to make its way into the hands of those who made it such a success.

Ouya announced that its Android games console will start shipping out to early Kickstarter backers today. It’s unknown in what order the consoles will ship, but rest assured that all early backers will get their hands on the new console in the coming days.

Backers receiving an Ouya in the coming days will want to keep a few things in mind as they start playing around with the new console:

When you first boot it up, you’ll experience our first update. This will either be super fast (seconds) or allow you to get a drink (minutes) based on your connection speed. Eventually, we want to do these updates in the background…

You’ll need a credit/debit card to download games. All games are still free to try. Your card will only be charged if you buy content you love. We do want valid payment information for everyone. This is to ensure that game developers can get paid when you love their game.

OUYA supports up to four controllers. And, because we support Bluetooth, you can pair other devices as well. We are testing now and will start publishing a list of devices soon.

Those who are getting an Ouya now are getting what is essentially an experience that is still in development. The console will not officially hit store shelves until June 4, but the team is hoping to collect data from early backers to improve the experience for everybody come launch. They will collecting ideas for improvement starting in April with a planned AMA on Reddit, and other communication vehicles.

On a final note, the Ouya team says that there are now 104 games published on the console’s storefront. For a launch lineup, it’s not bad. Of course, most of the games are ports of existing titles on Android or iOS, but these titles have been developed with widescreen HD gaming in mind so the experience might just be better than what you can currently get on mobile devices.

It’s no secret that games are popular on Kickstarter. Games of both the video and tabletop variety have taken to Kickstarter to seek funding for their insanely creative ideas. After a stellar 2012, and a promising 2013 ahead of us, Kickstarter has shared that the games category has reached a new high on the crowdfunding site.

Kickstarter announced that games have pulled in over $100 million over the past four years. All that money was supplied by 633,242 gamers as they pledged support to 1,476 successful projects. 2012 was the banner year for gaming on Kickstarter as the company says nearly 1,000 projects were submitted last year as many developers and game makers tried to emulate the success of the Double Fine Adventure.

Speaking of Double Fine Adventure, that particular project really kicked off the frenzy of gamers throwing money at games they wanted to see become reality. Gamers broke $1 million in total funds pledged in 2011 with $3.8 million pledged over the course of the year, but the year of the Double Fine Adventure saw that number skyrocket with gamers pledging a total of $83.1 million over the course of the year.

This year is looking even better for gamers as gaming projects have already raised over $22.4 million in the first three months of the year alone. If it keeps at this pace, games could easily break $100 million this year alone.

Kickstarter will be at PAX East this weekend with the Kickstarter Arcade showing off video and board games that have been successfully funded and brought to fruition thanks to the crowdfunding platform. Some of the games at the event will include God of Blades, Strike Suit Zero and Cards Against Humanity.

3D printers are becoming increasingly cheaper, but these cheap printers have a limited build volume There’s no inexpensive option for large-format 3D printers just yet. Well, there might just be one option if a recent Kickstarter project becomes successful.

Meet Gigabot, a large-format 3D printer from re:3D that went live on Kickstarter over the weekend. The Gigabot has a build volume of 600mm x 600mm x 600mm which is unheard of among desktop 3D printers. It’s no Objet1000, but a 600mm build volume is more than enough for most projects.

It’s cheap for its size, but the Gigabot will still cost you a pretty penny if you decide to buy the full thing. For $2,500, you can get everything you need to build the Gigabot, including the frame, motors and extruder. If you already have the electronic components lying around, you can get just the frame for $2,000. If you don’t want to deal with building the machine, you can have it pre-assembled for $4,000.

Like most other 3D printer projects on Kickstarter, it looks like the Gigabot will secure the funding necessary to launch. The team is only asking for $40,000 and has raised $33,876 of it in less than a day. It still has 59 days to go as well so there’s no imminent danger of it failing.

Planescape: Torment is one of the most highly revered RPGs of all time. That being said, it was unclear if its spiritual successor could find success on Kickstarter. Those fears have been laid to rest as the game has reached its Kickstarter goal and then some in less than a day.

Torment: Tides of Numenera went live on Kickstarter yesterday asking for $900,000 to fund the ambitious RPG. It raised the full amount required in less than six hours. Now at a little over a day later, the project has managed to raise almost $1.8 million with 32,900 backers.

The developers behind the project, inXile Entertainment, are no stranger to Kickstarter success. The studio raised almost $3 million for another sequel to a classic RPG – Wasteland 2. That game is still in development, but inXile assures fans that it will have enough resources to complete both games on time.

It looks like Torment will raise far more than Wasteland 2 did, and inXile has a few stretch goals on the horizon if it manages to raise more money. The project has already hit two of the stretch goals – the ability to play as either a male or female, and an expanded story with two new writers. If the game is able to reach $2 million, the development will add more story elements, a fully orchestrated soundtrack and a new companion character.

Kickstarter has just updated their iOS app for the first time since launching it two weeks ago, and according to the crowdfunding company v1.1 is “better, faster, and stronger.”

First off, users now have a new “messages view” which sorts messages in the app by inbox and sent.

Next, creator now have “better” push notifications. The Kickstarter app provides basic project analytics for creators, and they are notified on activity concerning each and every pledge they receive.

Also, video loading performance has received an update. Kickstart says that some people were having trouble with full-screen video (especially international users), and that problem has been fixed.

Here’s the full list of what’s new in v1.1:

New Messages View: Messages in the app are now sorted by inbox and sent

Better Notifications: Creators get better push notifications

App Banner Fix: App now opens to just the right spot when you click Open from the website banner.

Facebook + Signup Fixes: Some Facebook logins were failing and some new user signups saying “Name is required” even though you entered a name. It’s all fixed, it wasn’t you, it was us.

Faster Video + Fixes: Some people were having problems with full screen video, you are now in the clear! International users should see much better performance loading a video.

“The app is a whole new way to experience Kickstarter. We took things we’ve learned from the past three years of building the site, and applied them to a total redesign for the iPhone. We redesigned the project page, browse pages, and others. And we focused on making three things really useful and fun: finding new projects, keeping up to date with projects you’ve backed, and offering great tools for creators,” said Kickstarter when they first launched the app a couple of weeks ago.

You can grab the update in the App Store today.

The Ouya console has been quite the success story. The Google Android-powered game console began as a Kickstarter campaign asking for just under $1 million from people who would like to own a more open home video game console. The campaign earned its goal in less than one day and went on to raise over $8.5 million from tens of thousands of backers.

When the campaign ended in August 2012, a tentative release date of March 2013 was set. Though six months seems like very little time to develop a new game console, the Ouya’s developers seem to have followed through on their promise.

Ouya today announced that Ouya consoles will begin shipping to those who backed the Kickstarter campaign on March 28. Production of the consoles is already progressing and will ramp up throughout the next month. As the company announced earlier this month, gamers who didn’t have a chance to back the Kickstarter campaign can expect to see the console hit retail store shelves sometime in June.

Though the launch lineup of games for the Ouya may be sparse, the company used the launch date announcement to reveal several titles that will be coming to the console. In particular, an exclusive projects for the Ouya is being created by Quantum Conundrum developer Airtight Games, and Papo & Yo developer Minority Media will release an “adventure puzzler” for the console this fall.

In addition to the games, Ouya also announced that Thatgamecompany co-founder Kellee Santiago has joined Ouya as head of developer relations. Thatgamecompany is best known for developing Flower and Journey, which ended up on many game-of-the-year lists for 2012.
