Comedy Central’s late night duo took notice of yesterday’s SOPA Blackouts, as Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report both included SOPA-themed segments on Wednesday.

Colbert takes the stance that anything you need on the internet, he can provide. So what if reddit is blacked out? A certain photoshopped picture featuring a few of reddit’s favorite things will surely suffice.

Check out his take on the legislation below:

The Colbert Report

John Stewart, on the other hand, readily admits that he needs to do a little homework on SOPA and PIPA. He demonstrates this by looking up SOPA on Wikipedia only to find…well, you probably see where this is going:

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Until recently, Colbert and Stewart had been less vocal about the topic than many on the internet desired. A top post on reddit about a week ago was from a redditor who said they attended a taping of The Daily Show and asked Jon Stewart to look into SOPA. On that night’s episode, he briefly mentioned the legislation at the beginning of the broadcast.

Driven by yesterday’s massive web protest, both Colbert and Stewart were basically compelled to devote large chunks of their shows to SOPA.

How do you think they did? Let us know in the comments.

Adding to the giant list of tech industry people, celebrities, politicians, athletes and everyday Apple users who have publicly expressed their condolences and memories of the late Steve Jobs – the Comedy Central nightly news block has now weighed in.

On last night’s Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert gave his respects to Jobs with a bit that traced his excitement over various Apple products through the years.

He closes by remembering the brief communication that he had with Jobs, a short email following his appearance at the Grammy Awards. Check out Colbert saying goodbye to the icon with a rare break in character -

As the show closed, Colbert also gave this simple iPhone-themed tribute to Jobs:

On The Daily Show, Jon Stewart talked about his numerous interactions with Jobs, praising him for always being generous with his time. Stewart laments that the world lost Jobs way too soon, before we had time to extract a little more of his genius. Check it out:

I’ll admit it, I’m not that active on LinkedIn. I came to the party late, and with my heart (and time) already invested in Facebook, Twitter and to a certain extent Google+, I just couldn’t really motivate myself to grow a real presence.

Apparently, neither has Jon Stewart.

LinkedIn, of course, is the social network for professionals. According to the company, they connect over 120 million professionals who “exchange information, ideas and opportunities.”

Jon Stewart thinks that it is a company whose sole purpose is spamming his inbox. On his nightly show “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” he discussed the merits of LinkedIn while covering the recent Obama / LinkedIn Town Hall.

Check out the clip below –

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Get More: Daily Show Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,The Daily Show on Facebook

Although it’s totally unfair to point to four unemployed LinkedIn members and make an assumption about the usefulness of the social network itself, it’s still pretty funny. Plus, nobody said that comedy has to be fair to anyone.

Of course, everyone isn’t simply on LinkedIn to find a job. LinkedIn helps people re-connect with former co-workers and classmates and lets you make new business connections to help your professional career. Plus, its use as a social network allows users to get information and feedback from millions of industry professionals.

Like I said before, I’m not really a LinkedIn’er. What about you guys? Do any of Jon Stewart’s rips about the service have merit? How do you use LinkedIn? Let us know in the comments.

In this age of soundbites, it is becoming easier and easier to take things out of context. And with the popularity of YouTube, it’s becoming even easier to selectively edit video clips to suit your specific message. Though the practice is far from an issue of partisan politics (both sides use selective editing), this time, a Republican candidate for President became the target of selective editing.

MSNBC’s Ed Schultz used a clip this week of Texas Governor Rick Perry giving a speech to supporters about the economic situation. In that clip, Perry refers to a “black cloud” hanging over America. On his show, The Ed Show, Schultz chose to stop the clip after that Perry utterance. He then went on to accuse the Governor of racism, saying that the “black cloud” he was referring to was President Obama.

A couple seconds later in the clip, Perry says that the “black cloud” he is referring to is the national debt.

Schultz later apologized for the error, saying “we did not present the full context of those statement, and we should have.”

But the selective editing incident caught the attention of Jon Stewart, who on last night’s Daily Show tore into Schultz about his misuse of the video clip. The relevant part begins at about the 2:15 mark.

Stewart then brings in correspondents John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac to discuss racially charged language in the American political landscape.

The Daily Show – Indecision 2012 – Elephant Stampede to the White House – Black Clouds & Red Herrings
Get More: Daily Show Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,The Daily Show on Facebook

This instance of selective editing reminded me of a video that went viral concerning a local news station taking a young boy’s comments out of context. CBS affiliate WBBM in Chicago showed a clip of a young African-American boy saying that he wants to have a gun when he grows up in order to frame a story about gun violence. They news station failed to play the follow comment from the child, that specified the reason for owning a gun in the future: because he wanted to be a police officer.

Have you noticed that Twitter is taking over television? In the last year or so, shows from networks spanning all types of discipline – sports, comedy, news, have begun to use Twitter to create buzz and to request feedback.

Shows like Tosh.0, The Voice and just recently Breaking Bad have begun to display specific hashtags on-screen during their broadcasts in the hope that they will spur conversation across the social network. For the most part, this Twitter focus has been successful.

On last night’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart, cable news’ use of Twitter was the topic of discussion.

Right off the bat, Jon Stewart hits the nail on the head when it comes to describing the complexity that is Twitter: Platform for serious journalism and irreplaceable tool for social change, or a mecca for screaming teenage girls?

He says that Twitter is the social networking site that has “become an increasingly popular outlet for new about Justin Bieber and popular revolutions.”

But what fascinates him the most is the fact that so many news outlets are relying on Twitter responses about current news topics. News outlets like CNN and MSNBC often ask questions to the Twitterverse and then read the replies on air.

Sure, feedback from everyday folk has its advantages – but people’s names on Twitter…oh the humanity. Check out the clip below –

The Daily Show
Get More: Daily Show Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,The Daily Show on Facebook

The account he mentions that is quoted so often by the cable news outlets, @ladybigmac, turns out to be a woman named Ruth McInerney from Alabama. She is a retired bookkeeper, political junkie and NASCAR enthusiast. As of today, she has amassed over 1,500 followers for her contributions on CNN.

The debate about journalism and social media is a complex one. I guess a basic question is this: How seriously can we take someone with the handle @krispibacon? In my opinion, Twitter is a great source of quick information. The problem is that it is so large and unfiltered that it is oftentimes a source of wrong information.

Want proof? Just ask @NFLDraftInsider. His Twitter fail is discussed thoroughly here.

The internet has been buzzing about the recent Supreme Court decision that said it was unconstitutional to restrict the sale of graphically violent video games to minors. In a 7-2 vote, the SCOTUS struck down a California State law that would fine retailers $1,000 for distributing the mature games to children.

Justice Antonin Scalia, in his majority opinion, argued that video games must be protected as free speech because of their status as art. This put them alongside things like books, film and music in the court’s eyes.

Another part of Scalia’s argument was that there was no precedent for the restriction of violence to children in the same way that there was a restriction to sexual imagery like pornography. The ruling basically said that it is OK to sell violent imagery to kids, but not sexual imagery.

This distinction has people talking, mostly about the hypocrisy of such a dichotomy. Why, in this country, do we demonize sex much more than violence? Are we a violent culture? Are our sexual sensibilities warped because of our puritanical beginnings? All of these questions were at the heart of Jon Stewart’s take on the SCOTUS ruling on last night’s episode of The Daily Show.

Talking over footage from a recent Mortal Kombat game where a woman is pulled apart at the groin and disemboweled, Stewart points out the strange nature of the ruling.

The U.S. Supreme Court determined seven to two that the State of California has no interest in restricting the sale of this game to children, but, if while being disemboweled this woman were to suffer perhaps a nip-slip – regulate away.

Stewart also debuts a new game for Wii that looks promising. Check it out below –

Today is Republican Presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s birthday. And what could be a better present than being a trending topic on Google? After being mentioned on last night’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Santorum is, as of this post, 12th on Google Trends.

Except the popularity is leading people to discover something less than savory regarding the former Senator from Pennsylvania.

Santorum is the victim of a Google bomb, or briefly, the intentional manipulation of page rankings on Google search. The most famous Google bomb happened back in 2004 when an effort made it so George W. Bush’s bio page was result #1 when users searched the phrase “miserable failure.”

If you search “Rick Santorum” on Google, the top result just under the news section is not wikipedia, or his official website – it’s a rather interesting fake definition.

The Google bomb campaign began at the behest of popular blogger Dan Savage back in 2003. Santorum had made some remarks comparing homosexuality to pedophilia and bestiality, which obviously offended the gay community. They decided to fight back by manipulating the page results to display their preferred description of the then Senator right at the top. It worked, and this is what search results for “Rick Santorum” have looked like for years: (Warning, it’s a little crude)

Santorum is certainly not the most buzzed about presidential hopeful. But today, he finds himself in the Google Trends mix thanks to Jon Stewart. On last night’s Daily Show, Stewart asked people to Google Santorum, and it looks like they listened. Stewart joked, “he might as well change his name to lemon party.” If you don’t know what that is, don’t Google it – it’s disgusting and highly offensive.

Now I won’t speculate that Santorum’s “Google problem” will knock him out of the race, but candidates have been bounced for less. Remember Howard Dean’s scream? Yeah, this is totally worse.

Two of the most popular shows on Hulu will be pulled off the site after March 9th. Hulu announced late yesterday that it and Comedy Central have been unable to reach an agreement concerning the distribution of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

This doesn’t seem to signal a complete estrangement between the two companies; in fact, Hulu’s Andy Forssell wrote on the corporate blog, "[W]e are continuing to talk to the Comedy Central folks about a number of opportunities. They’re a great team and I’m confident that we’ll be working with them in multiple ways in the future."

Also, Hulu will direct users who search for the affected programs to TheDailyShow.com and TheColbertReport.com, two Comedy Central properties that will continue to make clips available for free.

Still, it’s hard to imagine that this would have occurred if both parties were completely satisfied. Perhaps Comedy Central wasn’t impressed by the size of Hulu’s audience. Or maybe they couldn’t agree over a revenue split. Either way, it’s a fact that Hulu’s trying to obtain more content, not shrink its existing library.

Hulu execs must be hoping that the site doesn’t lose too many viewers due to this loss, and praying that the development doesn’t represent the start of a trend.

Stewart continued, "It’s nothing, he was just using a trick .. to hide the decline. It’s just scientist speak for using a standard statistical technique recalibrating data in order to … trick you … into not knowing about … the decline.

But here’s what’s great about science, in disagreements we go back and look at the raw data (clip showing data destroyed) … Oh for fxxxks sake! Why would you throw out raw data from the 80′s … I still have Penthouses from the 70′s!

Huffington notes that 50,000 blogs are started every day at which point Stewart notes that the statistic sounds like that of a sexually transmitted disease. But she says blogging is a lot more fun.

"Write about yourpassion. Love your passion," says Huffington, when asked about what the "trick" is to blogging. She says to write about your obvious passion and your secret passion. "My obvious passion is poliitcs," she says before Stewart makes a joke about secret eggplant passions at which point Huffington reveals that she has a passion for cheese. She then provides an example of when she really did write about cheese.

The conversation that Huffington has with Stewart kind of backs up my point about how you have to care about what you’re doing when you’re blogging and using social media. You can’t just talk about your product and advertise. You have to get involved and get personal. In other words, you have to be a human, not an ad. Huffington understands this and that is one reason why the Huffington Post is as successful as it is, and she is on national television talking about blogging.

She can freely talk about things like cheese on her blog, and it makes the readers feel like they are reading something written by their friend, and that is something that people can connect to. She’s letting her personality through. It can also elevate the entertainment value of a publication. She likens blogging to emailing a friend in terms of tone as Stewart tries to grasp what blogging is really about. Huffington also refers to blogging as a "rough draft of history," presumably in the context of news-related topics.

She talks about the spectrum of blogging from the type of blogging from the Huffington Post does about news to people just blogging about more trivial things. She also talks about a series the Huffington Post launched calling on readers to blog the economic crisis, called "Blog the Meltdown."

"You lost a job? You have time to blog," exclaims Huffington.

Huffington then continues to try to explain to Stewart what blogging is really about and tells him that he doesn’t understand it, which is funny in itself, most likely true for a lot of other people as well. "Blogging is not about perfectionism. Blogging is about intamacy, immediacy, transparency, and sharing your thoughts the way you share them with a friend," she tells him.

I think that sums it up pretty nicely, and is a statement that businesses should consider when they set out to do their own blogging. If you keep this frame of mind in your writing, and in your social media efforts altogether, you have a better shot at really getting through to the audience that you are after.
