Organizers of the JavaOne and Oracle Develop conference may be fielding more than a few emails and phone calls about refunds this afternoon. Google, which was supposed to have a significant presence at the event, backed out today due to the lawsuit Oracle brought against it.

Joshua Bloch, Google’s chief Java architect, wrote on the Google Code Blog, "[W]e’re sad to announce that we won’t be able to present at JavaOne this year. We wish that we could, but Oracle’s recent lawsuit against Google and open source has made it impossible for us to freely share our thoughts about the future of Java and open source generally."

Bloch then continued, "This is a painful realization for us, as we’ve participated in every JavaOne since 2004, and I personally have spoken at all but the first in 1996."

A few onlookers have taken to debating whether this is a childish act on Google’s part (as opposed to a legal necessity), but by and large, people who left comments following Bloch’s post have just expressed disappointment.

Which brings us back to the matter of cancellations and refunds, perhaps. Unfortunately, the last day for even a 50 percent refund was August 20th.

Another not-so-fun fact: the standard ticket to the JavaOne and Oracle Develop conference sold for $1,795 this year.

It’s almost time to get in touch with one’s inner Java geek, and others, at JavaOne in San Francisco, May 6-9.

Snow is falling outside the lead-lined writers’ room at WebProNews, a chilly enough afternoon that one’s thoughts turn to a hot cup of Java after being outside playing “where’s the icescraper” in the trunk of the car.

For those in warmer climes, or perhaps nestled somewhere away from windows that aren’t of the code-development variety, programmers started receiving the news today about the 2008 edition of JavaOne.

Sun announced today they had culled nearly 1,700 submissions to a neighborhood of 350 for conference sessions. Some featured ones mentioned cover topics like JavaServer Faces, touch UI in mobile Java-based devices, and creating location-based services and apps on the Java platform.

Java University takes place May 5, the day before JavaOne opens. Morning and afternoon classes, a few bonus evening classes, and an all-day course on enterprise application design list in the curriculum.

As a final note, the Duke’s Choice awards return for a sixth appearance. Submissions for award consideration need to be made by March 14th, only a month away. Who will be the next Bang! Howdy?

The 2006 version of the JavaOne Conference finished its run with a number of Calls to Action aimed at Java developers.

As about 14,000 attendees departed this year’s JavaOne Conference, they were encouraged to join projects and get involved with open source efforts.

With around 5 million Java developers around the globe, the proponents of JavaOne suggested the community join the Java Community Process Program, the Sun Developer Network, and also the Java Net collaboration site.

They also would like to see more Java developers in the NetBeans community trying out projects like Profiler, Mobility, and Matisse. Those and the Sun Java Studio Creator represent just a few of the Java projects in the open source community.

The conference wrapup article by Jon Byous also summarized sessions from some of the major tech firms supporting Java:

BEA’s general session included their Blended Strategy approach to enterprise development and new opportunities in Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and EJB 3.0.

Oracle’s general session told attendees about key technologies they see as vital to the Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm: JavaServer Faces (JSF) for building user interfaces; Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0 (EJB 3.0) for building business logic; and Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) for mapping business process flow. They also talked tools and offerings, pledging to provide a variety of free tool offerings.

The IBM general session showed us ways to hit projected software delivery dates with precision and quality the Eclipse way.

Attendees at the Motorola general session learned of Motorola’s new MOTODEV developer program, designed to build a broad business and developer ecosystem that will speed the pace of innovation while creating new business channels and revenue streams. They really want to make it easer for you to make better, broadly compatible mobile applications and more money from them.

After they get home, attendees who wish to check out the Presentation PDFs can do so online. For instance, the Java Persistence API session presented by Sun and Oracle may be downloaded in its 65-page full-color glory.

Sessions held later in the conference that are not available yet for download, and will be available, should be online by mid-June.

Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz promises to open source more of Java (again), Ajax has been cleaning up with attendance, and the NetBeans IDE can see through illusions; that and much more has been going on in San Francisco this week.

Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz promises to open source more of Java (again), Ajax has been cleaning up with attendance, and the NetBeans IDE can see through illusions; that and much more has been going on in San Francisco this week.

Virtually everyone attending JavaOne must have sat in those bean bags and watched the big screens at the Moscone Center by now. With the conference half-completed (or should that be half-remaining?), and the bean bags shaped to a variety of butt grooves, long-time Java guy and author Robert Eckstein listed some must-sees for the remainder of JavaOne, like the MythBusters crew at the Thursday After Dark session or the SavaJe cellphone that’s selling out quickly.

New Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz and executive VP of software Rich Green both emphasized that, at some point, Java will be opened up. Right now they aren’t sure how to do it without risking compatibility problems, or worse a forking of the code.

Sun has promised to do this several times in the past, but it still hasn’t happened despite repeated calls from its userbase to do so. Neither executive provided a timetable to doing this, beyond announcing an Operating System Distributor’s License for Java that should better suit the needs of Linux distributors.

Eckstein also noted how attendees packed the “Introduction to Ajax” session on opening day. “Did you know how easy it was to work with AJAX? Did you know that you could implement your own version of Google Maps in less than 250 lines of code?” he wrote.

Ajaxian.com founders Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer presented that session to a packed room. They demonstrated how Ajax is not difficult to work with or implement, and that offline modes of operation can be accomplished with cached pages and data in an embedded Java database like Apache Derby.

Google employees Joshua Bloch and Neal Gafter, also known as the Type-It Brothers, Click and Hack, provided some of the punch for the NetBeans Software Day. They showed the audience a number of optical illusions, and then related how pieces of code can sometimes function differently than expected.

A new module for the NetBeans IDE, called Jackpot, will work like a very advanced “FindBugs plus Refactoring on steroids” to find and fix those illusionary code bugs. That can be found at the Jackpot module’s website.

The Java Community Project Program Management Office disclosed the nominations for the 2006 JCP Program Annual Awards in five categories.

JCP’s Executive Committee found nominees for the categories Member of the Year, Most Outstanding Spec Lead for Java Standard Edition/Enterprise Edition, Most Outstanding Spec Lead for Java Micro Edition, Most Innovative JSR for Java Standard Edition/Enterprise Edition, and Most Innovative JSR for Java Micro Edition.

Sun Microsystems said the awards would be announced May 17th during the JCP Community event at the JavaOne Conference taking place this week.

The JCP Program Annual Awards recognize excellence in Java standards development and innovation.

This time around, the nominations focus on areas that have had significant advances for Java Enterprise Edition and Java Micro Edition.

Java Specifications Requests (JSRs) for Java EE 5 and Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0 are among the nominations on the Enterprise side, while a couple of JSRs related to mobile services reside in the Micro Edition side.

A variety of other events are taking place during the conference along with the JCP Awards.

Java University classes began on May 15th, and NetBeans Software Day took place the same day.

Sun’s new CEO Jonathan Schwartz addressed attendees during the morning session on Tuesday, May 16th, while Oracle senior VP Thomas Kurian, Server Technologies Development, will talk about “The Next Application Platform” on Wednesday morning.

All of the events may be viewed on the Conference website.

The Java Community Process (JCP) gave the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) 5 specification its complete approval ahead of the JavaOne Conference.

The Java Community Process (JCP) gave the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) 5 specification its complete approval ahead of the JavaOne Conference.

Sun considers the Java EE 5 update the most significant one made to the platform since the debut of J2EE 1.2, way back in December 1999. The JCP’s Java EE/SE Executive Committee felt the same way in approving the update.

This should mean attendees of JavaOne will receive the Java EE 5 Software Development Kit (SDK) and Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) during the 2006 JavaOne Conference event, as Sun engineers complete those distributions based on the final Java specification.

“Java EE 5 accelerates and radically simplifies enterprise Java development by removing boilerplate code, relying upon reasonable defaults whenever possible, and providing a broader set of commonly used utility classes,” said Bill Shannon, distinguished engineer and JSR 244 Spec Lead, Sun Microsystems.

Michael Cot of the RedMonk analyst firm passed along his insights regarding EE 5 and its impact on Java application development:

The core technologies for delivering Java applications (servlets, transactions, XML, and DB access) have long stabilized, so making Java development as easy as Ruby on Rails, PHP, and other dynamic language development is what I, and many Java developers, are lusting after.

Ideally, in an open source world, I’d like to have seen JEE 5 become more like Spring in the sense that it supported existing APIs and libraries without re-writing them. But, multi-vendor, committee driven standards rarely result in simplicity over completeness, which isn’t always a bad thing, just typically an annoying one for the developer who doesn’t need the whole enchilada.

Cot suggested another important factor for EE 5, that being industry commentary on the features in the spec. “JBoss’s comments and choices were always a reliable gauge of J2EE. For example, they strongly supported Hibernate over entity beans while other vendors seemed to walk the J2EE line,” he said.

JBoss, along with IBM, BEA, Oracle, and SAP, numbered among those licensees endorsing the new spec. “JBoss fully supports Java EE 5 because it will provide the most scalable and powerful, yet easy-to-develop platform for enterprise applications,” said Sacha Labourey, chief technology officer of JBoss, Inc.

The Slot Car Programming Challenge will do more than let coders experience the thrill of playing with 1960′s era toys; it offers the chance for people to learn more about the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ).

RTSJ looks like a Myers-Briggs test result, but it stands for a Java technology that has proven challenging to some developers.

Sun’s Distinguished Engineer Greg Bollella outlined how Sun will overcome the fear, uncertainty, and doubt surrounding RTSJ – They’re going to let programmers race little cars around a track. Quite frankly, more of the world’s problems should be solved this way.

Bollella explained in his interview on Sun’s site how RTSJ addresses controlling physical devices and the three factors involved with doing so: sensing, control, and actuation.

“With RTSJ, you have to pay explicit attention to memory consumption and object creation in a particular memory area so that you don’t get exceptions,” Bollella said of a common challenge to programmers.

His work and that of others focuses on making those RTSJ implementations easier to use. But even the most well-crafted application will give up some of its average throughput performance.

The new challenge for Sun is getting programmers to do more with RTSJ and increase the number of those adopting it for real world use. At the JavaOne Conference beginning May 16th, Sun will build a race track for 1/24 scale cars and coders will write programs to run those cars quickly through the track. Bollella explained more about the Slot Car Challenge:

<div style=margin-left:10px; margin-right:10px;>We are going to install about 100-200 feet of track and embed the track with 200 sensors. The program can detect whether or not the car is over a sensor, but it can’t tell which sensor. All the sensors will be merged together. Developers who enter the Challenge have to write a polling loop that gathers the sensor data and continually monitors whether the car is over a sensor.

Then the program gives the car the appropriate voltage so that it goes fast on the straight-aways and slow on the curves. Contestants will write the code in the labs and bring it to the track where we run it on a machine. We’ll be keeping time as the car goes from the start to finish line. The 10 best times at the end of the Conference all get prizes.

So the Challenge isn’t just about going fast, but knowing when to slow down, and how to program that to move the car around the track in the quickest time. “The Slot Car Challenge at the 2006 JavaOne Conference will prove that anyone can program with RTSJ,” Bollella said.

The JavaOne Conference organizers have posted their recommended destinations for developers who code away on an enterprise level.

Sun Developer Network writer Ed Ort contributed a top ten list of where enterprise developers may want to go at the JavaOne Conference in San Francisco this year. Ort sees 2006 as an important one for Java technology:

<div style=margin-left:10px; margin-right:10px;>With the upcoming finalization of the Java EE 5 platform specification and the near-term release of the Java EE 5 SDK — a preview release is already available — enterprise developers have access to technologies such as Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 3.0 that make development of enterprise applications easier than ever before.

He also noted open source and interoperability are important themes for 2006, and acknowledged the growing importance of the GlassFish open source Java EE 5 application server project.

With Ajax, JavaServer Faces, and the new Persistence API among the hottest topics of interest at the conference, Ort recommended ten “must-see” destinations, which we’ll list and very briefly summarize here. More details may be found in the conference catalog.

EJB 3.0, Java Persistence API, and the Web Tier (TS-1887) – The Java Persistence API is a new standard API for data persistence and object/relational mapping.

What’s Happening With SOA in Open Source? (TS-2002) – This panel discussion features technical representatives of companies such as IBM, Sonic Software, LogicBlaze, and Sun Microsystems as well as representatives of open-source communities such as ObjectWeb and JBoss.

Project GlassFish: Developing the Java EE SDK (TS-3274) – As noted earlier, this focuses on the Java EE 5 platform-compliant application server, what it can do, and where it is headed.

Java Technology Techniques for Developing AJAX Applications (TS-3376) – AJAX is just as much a hot issue for Java developers as for any others; this discussion features Bruce Johnson, who participated in a major AJAX effort at Google and will discuss what he learned about AJAX.

Evolving JavaServer Faces Technology: AJAX Done Right (TS-1161) – More AJAX here, in this case the combination of AJAX and JavaServer Faces technology as a way of creating highly interactive and fast web applications.

Java API for XML Web Services (JAX-WS) 2.0 (TS-1194) – Learn how to simplify the task of developing web services through the use of JAX-WS 2.0.

Composable Web Services Using Interoperable Technologies From Sun’s “Project Tango” (TS-4661) – Sun and Microsoft’s work on Project Tango focuses on better interoperability between the Java EE platform and Microsoft .Net and the Windows Communication Foundation.

Spring Framework Update (TS-3744) – In this session, Spring’s cofounder Rod Johnson covers what’s new and cool in Spring.

Developing a Commercial Web Site, Using the PHP Scripting Language and J2EE Platform Web-Tier Technologies: Challenges, Benefits, and Drawbacks (TS-5672) – Aside from having a lengthy title, the session draws on case studies that compare and contrast website development in PHP and J2EE.

Twelve Reasons to Use NetBeans Software: Episode 2 (TS-1387) - New features in the open-source NetBeans IDE, including those for web application development, will be discussed.

JavaOne takes place May 16-19, 2006.

Java programmers will want to check out the planning information provided by Sun Microsystems for this year’s version of JavaOne in San Francisco, taking place May 16-19 at the Moscone Center.

It’s never too early to plan out a conference trip. Considering the size and quality of JavaOne, and its appeal to coders worldwide, a scant month to the start of the conference should be motivation to make those arrangements as soon as possible.

Conference Pass and Conference Plus Pass options exist, depending on an attendee’s desire to have Java University as part of their experience. Prices have been discounted $100 for early-bird registrations, now through May 15th. JavaOne offers educational faculty and student pricing options as well.

Session topics focus on the various Java platforms, SE, EE, and ME, along with other topics of interest. Leading Edge sessions on the latest developments in Java technology include ones that discuss developing Ajax applications using Java, for one example.

A trio of Industry Panels will consider Java along with other technologies like SOA and Ajax, as well as how pieces of an SOA runtime are already becoming available in open source.

Several Technical Case Studies walk through various types of application development using Java. One of the sessions discusses writing a Sony Playstation emulator using Java, while another suggest several troubleshooting tips when working with Java ME.

A series of Tutorials proceeds step by step through a number of topics. Attendees can learn how to use the Event Dispatch thread in Swing, or craft a way to integrate email with Java web applications.

The Advanced How-Tos get into the headier practical applications of Java technology, a considerable step above the essentials in the Tutorials sessions. Fifty-nine scheduled sessions include ones on Enterprise Java Beans, Ajax, Swing, data binding, and other topics.

Once registered, attendees can plan out their sessions using the Schedule Builder application. JavaOne said attendees must use Schedule Builder to get into preferred sessions.

Ahead of the Java One conference, Sun has begun accepting submissions to its fourth annual Duke’s Choice awards to recognize creative uses of Java technology.

The Java technology mascot is called Duke. It’s amazing the things you can learn. I always thought it was called the Java thingee. And Duke isn’t just a mascot, it’s an award for crafting Java applications and services in an innovative fashion.

Sun will accept submissions for the award online, with a deadline of March 15 for this year’s awards. Also, one award winner will come from the Java applications already featured on the Java website. Voting for one of five candidates from that site can be done online at Java.com until March 31.

Winners will be notified on April 7th. They will receive recognition and a statuette of Duke at the next JavaOne conference in San Francisco. This year’s conference will run May 16 – 19 at the Moscone Center.

Sun highlighted some of the accepted sessions for the forthcoming 2006 JavaOne conference. One of those will be of interest to the Web 2.0 crowd. Google’s Bruce Johnson will present “Java-based Technology Techniques for Developing AJAX Applications.”
